Combined Loading Of Composite Box-Beams With Linearized Differential Equations Of Motion, Michael Alan Dupuis Dec 2000

Combined Loading Of Composite Box-Beams With Linearized Differential Equations Of Motion, Michael Alan Dupuis

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of the following analysis is to develop a method for determining vertical, horizontal, and torsional displacements of arbitrarily laminated, cantilevered composite box-beam under static, transverse loading. Small deflections are assumed and the differential equations of motion have been linearized for ease of calculation. The Smith and Chopra stiffness matrix is used in the equations of motion, and software was written to solve for the stiffness matrix elements. Comparisons are made with bending slope solutions from previously published results, and the presented analysis is compared to empirical results of a composite box-beam under tip loading. Finally, an example solution …

An Ameliorated Prediction Of The Empennage In-Flight Gust Loads For A General Aviation Aircraft, Philippe Marchand Oct 2000

An Ameliorated Prediction Of The Empennage In-Flight Gust Loads For A General Aviation Aircraft, Philippe Marchand

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Airplanes often operate beyond their original design load profiles. Aviation opens so many new possibilities and wide variety of possible activities that it is hard for designers to foresee all loading spectra that the airplane structure will experience throughout its life. Nevertheless, the aircraft structures are required to be designed to failsafe or safe-life criteria to be certified by the FAA. AFS-120 provides a database of normal accelerations that can be used to derive airplane wing loads. ACE-100 describes an acceptable method for determining the fatigue life of an empennage based on the same normal acceleration data provided in AFS-120. …

Modifications To An Existing Glycol Retention Pond And Alternative Technologies Review For Aircraft Deicing Operations And Glycol Recovery And Treatment: Dane County Regional Airport, Steven J. Sletten Oct 2000

Modifications To An Existing Glycol Retention Pond And Alternative Technologies Review For Aircraft Deicing Operations And Glycol Recovery And Treatment: Dane County Regional Airport, Steven J. Sletten

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this study was to review new aircraft deicing technologies and developments and surmise which approach may be the most appropriate for the Dane County Regional Airport’s (KMSN) expansion plans, size, available funds, and environmental impact reduction efforts. This paper focuses on the emerging glycol source reduction issues that may be most suitable for this particular airport. A new deicing technology at KMSN would reduce the amount of aircraft deicing fluid used, allow for effacing flight operations, limit environmental impact, and lessen the costs of maintaining and operating the current glycol fluid recovery and treatment system.

An Analysis Of The Influence Of Age And Ionizing Radiation On Cognitive Performance, Elizabeth L. Gerhardt Aug 2000

An Analysis Of The Influence Of Age And Ionizing Radiation On Cognitive Performance, Elizabeth L. Gerhardt

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

This thesis was designed to study whether age has a significant effect on cognitive test results among persons exposed to ionizing radiation. The data for this investigation came from the fourth year of a 1995-98 longitudinal study of subjects exposed to radiation from the 1986 Chernobyl, Ukraine, nuclear power plant accident. Accuracy and efficiency scores from four cognitive tests taken by 84 Ukrainian volunteers were divided into two age groups and three radiation dosage groups for analysis. The results of this study found that decrements in human performance on tasks involving spatial processing increase with age in persons who have …

Nonlinear Analysis Of Unsymmetric Laminates Under Cylindrical Bending, Eun Seon Park Aug 2000

Nonlinear Analysis Of Unsymmetric Laminates Under Cylindrical Bending, Eun Seon Park

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Nonlinear analysis of unsymmetric composite long, narrow laminates under cylindrical bending is studied. The nonlinear governing equations are obtained to analyze the cylindrical bending of arbitrary laminates. The von-Karman type geometrical nonlinearity is incorporated in the governing equation. The shear effect between lamina is further considered in the governing equation. The solution is obtained for different boundary conditions. The results of arbitrary angle-plies are discussed. Unidirectional prepreg graphite-epoxy is considered for numerical results.

An Investigation Of Skill Acquisition Under Conditions Of Augmented Reality, Russell P. Milham Jul 2000

An Investigation Of Skill Acquisition Under Conditions Of Augmented Reality, Russell P. Milham

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Augmented reality is a virtual environment that integrates rendered content with the experience of the real world. There is evidence suggesting that augmented reality provides for important spatial constancy of objects relative to the real world coordinate system and that this quality contributes to rapid skill acquisition. The qualities of simulation, through the use of augmented reality, may be incorporated into actual job activities to produce a condition of "just-in-time learning." This may make possible the rapid acquisition of information and reliable completion of novel or infrequently performed tasks by individuals possessing a basic skill-set. The purpose of this research …

The Static Thrust Characterization Of The Quatra Aerrow Q100xl Engine For Flight Performance Prediction Of The 1/3-Scaled Cessna 172p Model, Joon Fui Ho Apr 2000

The Static Thrust Characterization Of The Quatra Aerrow Q100xl Engine For Flight Performance Prediction Of The 1/3-Scaled Cessna 172p Model, Joon Fui Ho

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this research is to predict the thrust as a function of forward flight velocity required for the one-third-scaled Cessna 172P. This model was designed to verify scaling laws. Therefore, it is important that it be aerodynamically scaled and that it have similar thrust characteristic as that of the full scale Cessna 172P. Several propellers and two Quatra Aerrow Q100XL two-cycle engines were acquired for this research project. Three propellers were selected to undergo a series of static thrust testing. The measured static thrust was then used to predict the flight performance of each tested propellers with the …

A Comparative Study Of Novice Vs. Experienced Pilots Utilizing Cockpit Models Applied To The Multi Function Display System, Susan J. Karkman Feb 2000

A Comparative Study Of Novice Vs. Experienced Pilots Utilizing Cockpit Models Applied To The Multi Function Display System, Susan J. Karkman

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Based on previous research findings in the expert/novice area, this thesis suggests that how people approach and solve problems largely depend on their experience level. The literature supports that experts tend to prioritize their actions differently than their novice counterparts as they negotiate their way through various critical flight scenarios. In this study we assume this difference is, in part, related to the fact that experts have a more complete understanding/perception of the overall situation than do novices. Psychologists often refer to this understanding as a more complete mental model.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate if the …
