Proposed Charlotte To Atlanta High-Speed Passenger Rail Line: An Economic, Infrastructural, And Developmental Analysis In The Upstate Of South Carolina, Ian C. Macurda, Kimberly Whitehead

SC Upstate Research Symposium

This research paper is an in-depth analysis of the high-speed passenger rail line proposed between Charlotte, NC and Atlanta, GA and its impact on the economy, infrastructure, and future development of the Upstate of South Carolina. Currently, passenger rail service between Charlotte and Atlanta is offered on Amtrak at late hours throughout the night on its long-distance passenger rail line The Crescent from New York City, NY to New Orleans, LA. The train is often delayed and is operating at a deficit for Amtrak, like most of their long-distance routes. Traffic on Interstate 85 through the Upstate is another issue …

Performance Improvements In Inner Product Encryption, Serena Riback Apr 2022

Performance Improvements In Inner Product Encryption, Serena Riback

Honors Scholar Theses

Consider a database that contains thousands of entries of the iris biometric. Each entry identifies an individual, so it is especially important that it remains secure. However, searching for entries among an encrypted database proves to be a security problem - how should one search encrypted data without leaking any information to a potential attacker? The proximity searchable encryption scheme, as discussed in the work by Cachet et al., uses the notions of inner product encryption developed by Kim et al.. In this paper, we will focus on the efficiency of these schemes. Specifically, how the symmetry of the bilinear …

Public Key Authenticated Encryption With Designated Equality Test And Its Applications In Diagnostic Related Groups, Yuanhao Wang, Qiong Huang, Hongbo Li, Jianye Huang, Guomin Yang, Willy Susilo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Due to the massive growth of data and security concerns, data of patients would be encrypted and outsourced to the cloud server for feature matching in various medical scenarios, such as personal health record systems, actuarial judgements and diagnostic related groups. Public key encryption with equality test (PKEET) is a useful utility for encrypted feature matching. Authorized tester could perform data matching on encrypted data without decrypting. Unfortunately, due to the limited terminology in medicine, people within institutions may illegally use data, trying to obtain information through traversal methods. In this paper we propose a new PKEET notion, called public-key …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Three polyimide membranes (polymer 0CN, copolymers 0CN/2CN (50/50) and polymer 2CN), with and without [Formula presented] dipolar groups, have been prepared by electrospinning and evaluated as lithium-ion battery separators. The prepared membranes show average fiber diameters between 0.5 and 1.09 μm and a degree of porosity of ~ 80%. The thermal stability, uptake, tortuosity and ionic conductivity values are influenced by the presence of the [Formula presented] dipolar groups in the polyimide polymer chain. The best battery performance in LFP/Li system is obtained for the 0CN sample, which shows discharge capacity values of 149.7 mAh·g− 1, 146.5 mAh·g− 1 and …

Analysis Of Low-Field Isotropic Vortex Glass Containing Vortex Groups In Yba2cu3o7−X Thin Films Visualized By Scanning Squid Microscopy, Frederick Wells, Alexey V. Pan, Renshaw Wang, Sergey Fedoseev, Hans Hilgenkamp

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The glass-like vortex distribution in pulsed laser deposited YBa2Cu3O7 − x thin films is observed by scanning superconducting quantum interference device microscopy and analysed for ordering after cooling in magnetic fields significantly smaller than the Earth's field. Autocorrelation calculations on this distribution show a weak short-range positional order, while Delaunay triangulation shows a near-complete lack of orientational order. The distribution of these vortices is finally characterised as an isotropic vortex glass. Abnormally closely spaced groups of vortices, which are statistically unlikely to occur, are observed above a threshold magnetic field. The origin of these groups …

A New Strategy For Integrating Abundant Oxygen Functional Groups Into Carbon Felt Electrode For Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries, Ki Jae Kim, Seung-Wook Lee, Taeeun Yim, Jae-Geun Kim, Jang Wook Choi, Jung Ho Kim, Min-Sik Park, Young-Jun Kim

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The effects of surface treatment combining corona discharge and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) on the electrochemical performance of carbon felt electrodes for vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs) have been thoroughly investigated. A high concentration of oxygen functional groups has been successfully introduced onto the surface of the carbon felt electrodes by a specially designed surface treatment, which is mainly responsible for improving the energy efficiency of VRFBs. In addition, the wettability of the carbon felt electrodes also can be significantly improved. The energy efficiency of the VRFB cell employing the surface modified carbon felt electrodes is improved by 7% at high …

Model Tests On Free-Standing Passive Pile Groups In Sand, Wei-Dong Guo, E. H. Ghee Jan 2010

Model Tests On Free-Standing Passive Pile Groups In Sand, Wei-Dong Guo, E. H. Ghee

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A number of tests have been conducted to investigate response of vertically loaded capped pile groups in sand undergoing uniform lateral soil movement. The development of shear force, bending moment and deflection along the piles was measured. Presented in this paper are 4 tests on 2-pile free-standing groups, with a view to establish solutions for predicting the pile response. It was concluded that (1) maximum bending moment Mmax is largely linearly related to the sliding force Tmax in stable and moving layers; (2) The combined impact of pile-cap fixity, soil movement profiles, and axial load may be quantified by a …

A Systematic Study Of Radio-Induced X-Ray Cavities In Clusters, Groups, And Galaxies, L Birzan, D A. Rafferty, B R. Mcnamara, M W. Wise, Paul E. J Nulsen

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We present an analysis of 16 galaxy clusters, one group, and one galaxy drawn from the Chandra Data Archive. These systems possess prominent X-ray surface brightness depressions associated with cavities or bubbles that were created by interactions between powerful radio sources and the surrounding hot gas. The central galaxies in these systems harbor radio sources with luminosities ranging between ∼2 × 10 38 and 7 × 10 44 ergs s -1. The cavities have an average radius of ∼10 kpc, and they lie at an average projected distance of ∼20 kpc from the central galaxy. The minimum energy associated with …

Local Compactness In Free Topological Groups, Peter Nickolas, Mikhail Tkachenko

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We show that the subspace An(X) of the free Abelian topological group A(X) on a Tychonoff space X is locally compact for each n ω if and only if A2(X) is locally compact if an only if F2(X) is locally compact if and only if X is the topological sum of a compact space and a discrete space. It is also proved that the subspace Fn(X) of the free topological group F(X) is locally compact for each n …

The Soft X-Ray Background: Evidence For Widespread Disruption Of The Gas Haloes Of Galaxy Groups, K K S Wu, A C. Fabian, Paul E. J Nulsen Jan 2001

The Soft X-Ray Background: Evidence For Widespread Disruption Of The Gas Haloes Of Galaxy Groups, K K S Wu, A C. Fabian, Paul E. J Nulsen

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Almost all of the extragalactic X-ray background (XRB) at 0.25 keV can be accounted for by radio-quiet quasars, allowing us to derive an upper limit of 4 keV cm−2 s−1 sr−1 keV−1 for the remaining background at 0.25 keV. However, the XRB from the gas haloes of groups of galaxies, with gas removal resulting from cooling accounted for, exceeds this upper limit by an order of magnitude if non-gravitational heating is not included. We calculate this using simulations of halo merger trees and realistic gas density profiles, which we require to reproduce the observed gas fractions …

Representations Of Finite Groups And Cuntz-Krieger Algebras, M Mann, Iain Raeburn, C Sutherland

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We investigate the structure of the C*-algebras (9ρ constructed by Doplicher and Roberts from the intertwining operators between the tensor powers of a representation ρ of a compact group. We show that each Doplicher-Roberts algebra is isomorphic to a corner in the Cuntz-Krieger algebra (9A of a {0,1}-matrix A = Aρ associated to ρ. When the group is finite, we can then use Cuntz's calculation of the K-theory of (9A to compute K*((9ρ).
