Development Of A Novel Casting Alloy Composed Of Aluminum And Cerium With Other Minor Additions, Zachary Cole Sims Dec 2020

Development Of A Novel Casting Alloy Composed Of Aluminum And Cerium With Other Minor Additions, Zachary Cole Sims

Doctoral Dissertations

Eutectic casting alloys of aluminum and cerium are a recent discovery and early research describes an alloy with great potential to meet the growing demand for a lightweight, economical, high specific strength material for use in high-temperature or extremely corrosive environments. The broad application of aluminum alloys across industry sectors is driven by their collection of balanced properties including economical cost, high specific strength, and flexibility of their production pathways. Additionally, their high corrosion resistance makes them a good choice for structural materials. Despite this, the push to use aluminum alloys in ever more extreme environments with higher temperatures, stresses, …

Boron Nitride Nanotube Based Lightweight Metal Matrix Composites: Microstructure Engineering And Stress-Transfer Mechanics, Pranjal Nautiyal Jun 2020

Boron Nitride Nanotube Based Lightweight Metal Matrix Composites: Microstructure Engineering And Stress-Transfer Mechanics, Pranjal Nautiyal

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Lightweight metals, such as Aluminum, Magnesium and Titanium, are receiving widespread attention for manufacturing agile structures. However, the mechanical strength of these metals and their alloys fall short of structural steels, curtailing their applicability in engineering applications where superior load-bearing ability is required. There is a need to effectively augment the deformation- and failure-resistance of these metals without compromising their density advantage.

This dissertation explores the mechanical reinforcement of the aforementioned lightweight metal matrices by utilizing Boron Nitride Nanotube (BNNT), a 1D nanomaterial with extraordinary mechanical properties. The nanotubes are found to resist thermo-oxidative transformations up to ~750°C, establishing their …

The results of seasonal Al and Mn activity on the surface of the atmosphere above the city of Nur-Sultan are shown from October 2016 to January 2017. The technique of sampling aerosols in various fractions and further analysis of the data are described. Together with scientists from the University of Hiroshima (Hiroshima, Japan) and the University of Tsukuba (Tsukuba, Japan), the composition of aerosols in the air of Astana was monitored. The aim of the project was to develop a methodology for sampling aerosols in various fractions and conduct measurements on an ongoing basis. The studies were carried out using …

Molten Aluminum Capillary Hole-Filling, Cheng-Nien Yu Jan 2020

Molten Aluminum Capillary Hole-Filling, Cheng-Nien Yu

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical Engineering

The presence of micrometeoroids and space debris in open space raises the question of a mitigation of the damage caused by a possible impact on the man-made structures such as space shuttles, satellites, and the International Space Station. A method achieving metallic sealed hole would be of an interest for development. This dissertation studies a surface tension driven capillary filling/sealing phenomenon in a controlled atmosphere brazing process of aluminum. The filled vs. non-filled results are predictable using minimization of energy, which shows that the outcomes depend heavily on prescribed configurations of the hole. Equilibrium models show excellent agreement with experimental …

Structural Performance Evaluation Of Dynamic Message Signs With Adhesive And Welded Joints, Ibin Amatya Jan 2020

Structural Performance Evaluation Of Dynamic Message Signs With Adhesive And Welded Joints, Ibin Amatya

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The ultimate objective of this study was to determine the structural performance of the Dynamic Message Sign (DMS) bonded with chemical adhesive in terms of ultimate strength and fatigue strength. To achieve this objective, this study first investigated the effects of various parameters, including humidity and temperature on tensile, shear, peel, and cleavage strength through small-scale tests of adhesive specimens with variation in specimen width. The tensile, shear, peel, and cleavage specimens were conditioned in a temperature-humidity controlled chamber prior to its testing. The tensile, shear, peel, and cleavage specimens with different widths were tested according to American Society for …

Galvanic Corrosion In Aluminum/Steel Joints, Maegan Saul Jan 2020

Galvanic Corrosion In Aluminum/Steel Joints, Maegan Saul

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

As car manufacturers seek to use lighter weight materials, aluminum is being more commonly used in the construction of vehicles. However, the strength of steel cannot be matched and both metals are necessary, leading to the joining of dissimilar metals. This connection of different metals leads to a galvanic coupling and subsequent corrosion of the less noble metal. This project aims to observe the corrosion and galvanic coupling behavior of aluminum alloys and carbon steel so that a model may be produced which can accurately predict the expected responses of the metals in various environments. Better, more accurate modeling of …
