Growing Research In A Traditionally Teaching-Oriented College, Mike Murphy, Michael Dyrenfurth
Growing Research In A Traditionally Teaching-Oriented College, Mike Murphy, Michael Dyrenfurth
Conference papers
There is increasing pressure on universities to contribute to ‘the knowledge society’ by increasing the level of research activity and output within the university. This is particularly true in the sciences, engineering and technology. This increased pressure applies equally to traditionally teaching-oriented colleges (TTOC), although not at the same scale as research-intensive universities. For the TTOC, given the primacy of teaching, this paper discusses the nexus between teaching and research and the question ‘why do research?’ is addressed within the overarching goal of embedding a research culture within the college. Initiatives to develop and grow sustainable research activity in traditionally …

relative strategic positioning and competitive advantages. The traditional 'make and sell' attitude is rapidly becoming a customer orientated 'sense and respond' philosophy. Further, the needs for avoidance of waste, cost efficiency and service to the customer have the potential to become the major competitive focus especially in industries where there is little differentiation in product design and technology. This paper examines the strategic opportunities for participants in the pipeline construction industry to adopt state of the art industry philosophies. It is postulated that competitors are relying on functional hierarchy and command and control governance where operations rely on a chain …

A loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) procedure for the detection of Cryptosporidium in environmental and fecal samples was developed and evaluated. This is the first demonstration of LAMP applied to detection of Cryptosporidium. Due to its specificity and simplicity, the method could become a useful diagnostic tool for epidemiologic studies of Cryptosporidium presence.

Journal of International Technology and Information Management
Today’s numerous Quantitative Analysis (QA) tools have been successfully utilized to solve business problems in diverse applications. However, the application of QA tools in solving information security problems has been sparse. Devising the means and ways to use QA tools in resolving industry-wide security problems has the potential to yield enormous global economic benefit. The purpose of this paper is to explore the use of QA tools as a means of improving the processes involved in the Information Security Systems Development Lifecycle (SecSDL). Information security professionals use the SecSDL as a guide for formulating a comprehensive information security program. The …
