Development Of Pressure Swing Adsorption (Psa) Processor Co2 Capture From Flue Gas, Md. Atikur Rahman Jun 2016

Development Of Pressure Swing Adsorption (Psa) Processor Co2 Capture From Flue Gas, Md. Atikur Rahman

Theses and Dissertations

Reducing the anthropogenic CO2 emissions and lowering the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere has become one of the most important environmental issues of recent times. To this end, the development of a cost effective pressure swing adsorption (PSA) process, utilizing commercially available 13X zeolite as the adsorbent, is underway to remove and concentrate CO2 in the flue gas of a coal-fired power plant. This systematic development effort has been carried out so far at the bench scale. It has included the following studies that defined and validated this PSA process both experimentally and via a PSA process model. …

Tournament Wizard: Simple And Lightweight Software For Running Fencing Tournaments, John Ryan Daley Jun 2016

Tournament Wizard: Simple And Lightweight Software For Running Fencing Tournaments, John Ryan Daley

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Many sports use technology to assist in officiating and administration. Fencing tournament organizers use specialized software to help determine how their matches occur, and to help them administer a tournament. However, the software most commonly used to run these tournaments has some significant limitations, and is not well-suited for use with small events. As a former President of Cal Poly’s Fencing Club, I have had a chance to interact with one popular application for running fencing tournaments a number of times, and made note of its shortcomings. These included issues with operating system compatibility, license transference, and amount of space …

Development And Evaluation Of Matrix Material Formulations For Potential Integration Into Immunodiagnostic Biosensors, Payam Aminayi Jun 2016

Development And Evaluation Of Matrix Material Formulations For Potential Integration Into Immunodiagnostic Biosensors, Payam Aminayi

Dissertations

This study supports the development, characterization and optimization of biosensor material formulations for immunodiagnostic applications based on experimental findings and hypotheses by Wang and Wu [1, 2], and using a test-plate apparatus and thin-film design developed by Young [3].

Certain biosensors working on the basis of conductance/impedance changes have demonstrated their potential to detect various bacteria, enzymes, and biomolecules due to their enhanced electrical properties with incorporated single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT). From the work conducted in our laboratory, we are attempting to determine and develop a matrix formulation containing highly dispersed SWNT, antibody and other components that elicit a significantly …

Ymca Operations Manual Development, Devlin Stewart Jun 2016

Ymca Operations Manual Development, Devlin Stewart

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

The San Luis Obispo YMCA sports department was losing money and overworking their employees due to lack of processes and organizational issues. To address this, a plan was made with the sports director to begin organizing the sports department. This would be done by creating an operations manual for them to organize and consolidate all of their relevant information.

The project was scoped to develop a plan for the YMCA to implement an operations manual. By delivering a work breakdown structure, a gantt chart, and a plan for continuous improvement, the YMCA could use these tools to develop their operations …

Multi-Axis Machining Project Development, Ryan Patrick Blodgett, Andre Peter Rivera Mar 2016

Multi-Axis Machining Project Development, Ryan Patrick Blodgett, Andre Peter Rivera

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

Multi-axis milling is a manufacturing material removal process in which computer numerically controlled (CNC) tools cut away excess material through movement in four or more axes. Compared to traditional three-axis machining, multi-axis machining greatly increases the capability and accuracy of the CNC machining processes by reducing the amount of operations required to completely machine a part. Currently, the Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering Department at Cal Poly lacks an advanced CNC class that incorporates fourth and fifth axis CNC machining in the curriculum. This report describes the process behind creating a project for such a class. The class will demonstrate the …

Development Of Novel High-Throughput Methodologies To Evaluate The Thermal Stability Of High-Temperature Thin-Film Crystals For Energy Applications, Jonathan Kenneth Bunn Jan 2016

Development Of Novel High-Throughput Methodologies To Evaluate The Thermal Stability Of High-Temperature Thin-Film Crystals For Energy Applications, Jonathan Kenneth Bunn

Theses and Dissertations

High temperature materials are used in a variety of energy applications such as jet turbines, high temperature sensors, and solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). Discovery of new materials and their optimization represents a difficult engineering challenge, as the materials have to be designed to have a high figure of merit during intense high temperature operations.

The large number of engineering considerations involved in the identification and optimization of such materials makes traditional one-by-one material investigations prohibitively time consuming. The time needed to explore large parameter domains can be significantly decreased through the use of high-throughput experimentation (HTE). HTE is an …

The Next Billion: Lessons In Off-Grid Electricity Development From The Global South, Peter Mcdonough Jan 2016

The Next Billion: Lessons In Off-Grid Electricity Development From The Global South, Peter Mcdonough

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Today about a third of the world’s population has no access to electricity, and another third has only limited access. Driven by the push for development on one hand and the reality of climate change on the other, a combination of for-profit companies, NGOs, missions, and aid organizations is looking for the silver bullet to sustainable electricity development. In order to understand the challenges facing off-grid electricity projects I used recent literature in the form of peer-reviewed journals, agency reports, news articles, and technical documents; stakeholder interviews; and on-site observations in selected case studies in Nepal, India, and Tanzania. In …
