Strategic Design Of Service Orientated Web-Based Supply Chain Infrastructure, Leone J. Dunn, Peter R. Gibson Dec 2012

Strategic Design Of Service Orientated Web-Based Supply Chain Infrastructure, Leone J. Dunn, Peter R. Gibson

Peter R Gibson

The traditional 'make and sell' attitude of industrial manufacturing organisations has now almost entirely given way to customer orientated 'sense and respond' service philosophies to the extent where this has become a major competitive key success factor in a global manufacturing industry. In order to become service orientated, manufacturing industry is increasingly dependent on efficient and effective supply relationships. This trend is compounded by needs for waste avoidance, minimal inventory, cost efficiency and appropriate service to the customer. This paper considers the strategic opportunities for large engineering project firms that have identified a need to establish advantages over their competitors …

Design And Implementation Of Edge Detection Algorithm In Dspic Embedded Processor, Prashan Premaratne, Sabooh Ajaz, Ravi Monaragala, Nalin Bandara, Malin Premaratne

Dr Prashan Premaratne

The research presented here is an attempt to use a very basic, low cost and non-specialized microcontroller for image processing tasks. The applications emanating from such an attempt will result in inexpensive face detection, intelligent motion sensors to low cost vehicle counting systems. We have been able to develop a system based on Microchip dsPIC microcontroller that implements edge detection of still images. Hardware-based signal processors such as Texas Instrument DSP (Digital Signal Processing) or Field Gate Arrays (FPGA) are generally an expensive solution for image processing applications. On the other hand a conventional 8-bit microcontroller doesn’t have enough capability …

Best Source For Patent Drawing Rules & Regulations, Bernadette Marshall Sep 2012

Best Source For Patent Drawing Rules & Regulations, Bernadette Marshall

Bernadette Marshall

It is with great pleasure that I announce something new from NBG-Drafting and Design. This is our first Newsletter - Special Edition; In this edition we will cover our preferred sources for patent drawing rules & regulations. Finding resources for information regarding patent drawing rules can be frustrating. Much of the information refers to out-of-date methods, like hand drawings using ink pens on board. It is hard to imaging creating any type of mechanical/technical drawings today without the use of CADD (software application for computer aided design and drafting). Most skilled patent draftspersons today are practicing in CADD.

Design And Analysis Of General And Travelling Dielectrophoresis, T. Kinkeldei, W.H Li Aug 2012

Design And Analysis Of General And Travelling Dielectrophoresis, T. Kinkeldei, W.H Li

Professor Weihua Li

This paper presents the simulation of general and travelling dielectrophoretic forces, as well as the movement of the particles in a sandwich structure micro-device. The electrode geometry of the micro device used for simulation is an interdigitated bar electrode. The simulation method used to solve the equations is based on the least square finite difference method (LSFD). The simulation first calculates all forces acting at any place in the chamber, with these forces the trajectory of a particle can now be proposed. All of the particles parameters like radius, voltage, initial height, etc can easily be changed and the simulation …

Design And Simulation Of Roadway Development Operations To Improve Productivity, Soumya Raghavendra Rao, Christopher D. Cook, Ernest Y. Baafi, R Porteous Aug 2012

Design And Simulation Of Roadway Development Operations To Improve Productivity, Soumya Raghavendra Rao, Christopher D. Cook, Ernest Y. Baafi, R Porteous

Christopher Cook

A typical Australian 3–5 Mt/year longwall requires 9 to 15 km of roadway to be developed every year (G. Lewis and G. Gibson: Proc. 13th Austr. Tunnelling Conf., Melbourne, Australia, May 2008, ATS, 317–326.). One of the major challenges faced by the Australian longwall mining industry is that roadway development has been unable to keep pace with improvements in longwall extraction rates. This has affected the profitability, viability and future of underground coal mines (M. Kelly: 'Coordination of roadway development strategy', ACARP report no. C5013, ACARP, Brisbane, Australia, 1997.). Gibson (G. Gibson: 'Australian roadway development– current practices', ACARP report no. …

Information And Communications Technology For Development (Ict4d) – A Design Challenge?, Rahul Tongia, Eswaran Subrahmanian Mar 2012

Information And Communications Technology For Development (Ict4d) – A Design Challenge?, Rahul Tongia, Eswaran Subrahmanian

Eswaran Subrahmanian

In this paper, we make the case that ICT projects in the developed and developing world often lead to partial or total failures due to the incomplete assessment of the problem being solved and the metrics used to evaluate solutions. While in the developed world the success of ICT solutions are often determined by the market, with available infrastructure and market mechanisms, in the developing world this ecosystem does not exist thus requiring an understanding of the ecosystem in which ICT solutions are to be applied. Using literature from the design space, and experiences in ICT for development, we elaborate …

Darcy M Bullock

In 2003 the Indiana Department of Transportation executed an ambitious interstate reconstruction project in Indianapolis, named Hyperfix. This project completely closed the I-65/70 section during reconstruction, on which approximately 250,000 vehicles travel daily. Due to the scope and risk involved, an extensive amount of planning, coordination, and cooperation occurred. The main section was rebuilt during the total closure phase, which lasted 55 days. The total closure approach had never been performed before by INDOT on such a high volume artery in a downtown metropolitan area. This present study analyzed the project and its impact on the Indianapolis area. The report …

Oxidative Mineralisation Of Petroleum Refinery Effluent Using Fenton-Like Process, Abdul Aziz Abdul Raman Feb 2012

Oxidative Mineralisation Of Petroleum Refinery Effluent Using Fenton-Like Process, Abdul Aziz Abdul Raman

Abdul Aziz Abdul Raman

Petroleum refinery effluents (PREs) are wastewaters characterised by high values of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total organic carbon (TOC). Mineralisation of PRE is not commonly reported. For Fenton oxidation, in particular, reported PRE mineralisation is low. In this paper, treatability of a petroleum refinery effluent using a Fenton-like oxidative reaction is described. A statistically designed experimental matrix was used to evaluate the individual and combined effects of process variables based on a five-level central composite design (CCD). Response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to optimise the parameters of interest (COD and TOC), and response surface equations were subsequently developed. …

A Cost Effective Sensor Design For Granular Flow Visualization, Anton Fuchs, Peter W. Wypych, David B. Hastie, Ian Frew, David M. Cook, B. Bradstatter

David Hastie

This paper presents a cost-effective sensor design based on an arrangement of light dependent resistors (LDRs) to determine the particle flow velocity and the particle concentration of granular material flow. The sensor is designed for both dense phase and dilute phase flow and can be applied wherever a transparent sightglass is used in material conveying. The measurement setup and its applicability for industrial conveying processes are discussed and measurement results utilising plastic pellets are presented.
