Bio-Inspired Multi-Spectral And Polarization Imaging Sensors For Image-Guided Surgery, Nimrod Missael Garcia Dec 2017

Bio-Inspired Multi-Spectral And Polarization Imaging Sensors For Image-Guided Surgery, Nimrod Missael Garcia

McKelvey School of Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Image-guided surgery (IGS) can enhance cancer treatment by decreasing, and ideally eliminating, positive tumor margins and iatrogenic damage to healthy tissue. Current state-of-the-art near-infrared fluorescence imaging systems are bulky, costly, lack sensitivity under surgical illumination, and lack co-registration accuracy between multimodal images. As a result, an overwhelming majority of physicians still rely on their unaided eyes and palpation as the primary sensing modalities to distinguish cancerous from healthy tissue. In my thesis, I have addressed these challenges in IGC by mimicking the visual systems of several animals to construct low power, compact and highly sensitive multi-spectral and color-polarization sensors. I …

Underwater Celestial Navigation Using The Polarization Of Light Fields, Samuel Bear Powell May 2017

Underwater Celestial Navigation Using The Polarization Of Light Fields, Samuel Bear Powell

McKelvey School of Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Global-scale underwater navigation presents challenges that modern technology has not solved. Current technologies drift and accumulate errors over time (inertial measurement), are accurate but short-distance (acoustic), or do not sufficiently penetrate the air-water interface (radio and GPS). To address these issues, I have developed a new mode of underwater navigation based on the passive observation of patterns in the polarization of in-water light. These patterns can be used to infer the sun__s relative position, which enables the use of celestial navigation in the underwater environment. I have developed an underwater polarization video camera based on a bio-inspired polarization image sensor …

Bio-Inspired Multi-Spectral Imaging Sensors And Algorithms For Image Guided Surgery, Shengkui Gao Aug 2015

Bio-Inspired Multi-Spectral Imaging Sensors And Algorithms For Image Guided Surgery, Shengkui Gao

McKelvey School of Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Image guided surgery (IGS) utilizes emerging imaging technologies to provide additional structural and functional information to the physician in clinical settings. This additional visual information can help physicians delineate cancerous tissue during resection as well as avoid damage to near-by healthy tissue. Near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence imaging (700 nm to 900 nm wavelengths) is a promising imaging modality for IGS, namely for the following reasons: First, tissue absorption and scattering in the NIR window is very low, which allows for deeper imaging and localization of tumor tissue in the range of several millimeters to a centimeter depending on the tissue surrounding …

Polarization Sensor Design For Biomedical Applications, Timothy York May 2015

Polarization Sensor Design For Biomedical Applications, Timothy York

McKelvey School of Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Advances in fabrication technology have enabled the development of compact, rigid polarization image sensors by integrating pixelated polarization filters with standard image sensing arrays. These compact sensors have the capability for allowing new applications across a variety of disciplines, however their design and use may be influenced by many factors. The underlying image sensor, the pixelated polarization filters, and the incident lighting conditions all directly impact how the sensor performs.

In this research endeavor, I illustrate how a complete understanding of these factors can lead to both new technologies and applications in polarization sensing. To investigate the performance of the …

Polarization Imaging Sensors In Advanced Feature Cmos Technologies, Raphael Njoroge Njuguna Aug 2013

Polarization Imaging Sensors In Advanced Feature Cmos Technologies, Raphael Njoroge Njuguna

McKelvey School of Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The scaling of CMOS technology, as predicted by Moore's law, has allowed for realization of high resolution imaging sensors and for the emergence of multi-mega-pixel imagers. Designing imaging sensors in advanced feature technologies poses many challenges especially since transistor models do not accurately portray their performance in these technologies. Furthermore, transistors fabricated in advanced feature technologies operate in a non-conventional mode known as velocity saturation. Traditionally, analog designers have been discouraged from designing circuits in this mode of operation due to the low gain properties in single transistor amplifiers. Nevertheless, velocity saturation will become even more prominent mode of operation …

High-Resolution Low-Noise Polarization Imaging Sensor For Astronomical Applications, Radoslav Marinov Aug 2013

High-Resolution Low-Noise Polarization Imaging Sensor For Astronomical Applications, Radoslav Marinov

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Polarization imaging is useful to the field of astronomy because the polarization state caused by reflections, scattering events, and magnetic fields can be used to infer properties such as shape and index of refraction about celestial bodies. This work presents a low-noise high-resolution polarization imaging sensor consisting of a CCD imager overlaid with a nanowire linear polarizer filter array of four different orientations: 0°, 45°, 90°, and 135°) matched to the pixel pitch. Fabrication details and experimental setup for characterization are discussed. The performance of the sensor is assessed over a range of polarization states, light intensities, wavelengths, and incident …
