Uncertainty Quantification Framework For Design Optimization, Austin Ryan Williams
Uncertainty Quantification Framework For Design Optimization, Austin Ryan Williams
Masters Theses
Difficulty to obtain neutron sources of interest have driven the need for optimization
techniques to tailor a neutron generator as a replacement. A proposed solution uses
off-the-shelf neutron sources coupled with an energy-tuning assembly to mimic the
source of interest (i.e. AmLi, AmBe, thermonuclear fission spectra, etc.). These
energy-tuning assemblies have been designed with complex optimization algorithms
coupled with Monte Carlo simulations. These new system surrogate designs often
do not have an experimental counterpart for validation and comparison, and lack
non-statistical uncertainties. This work aims to improve confidence in the predictions
by providing a tool for fast uncertainty quantification to …

Forecasting Nigeria's Electricity Demand And Energy Efficiency Potential Under Climate Uncertainty, Olawale Olabisi
Forecasting Nigeria's Electricity Demand And Energy Efficiency Potential Under Climate Uncertainty, Olawale Olabisi
Doctoral Dissertations
The increasing population and socio-economic growth of Nigeria, coupled with the current, unmet electricity demand, requires the need for power supply facilities expansion. Of all Nigeria’s electricity consumption by sector, the residential sector is the largest and growing at a very fast rate. To meet this growing demand, an accurate estimation of the demand into the future that will guide policy makers to adequately plan for the expansion of electricity supply and distribution, and energy efficiency standards and labeling must be made. To achieve this, a residential electricity demand forecast model that can correctly predict future demand and guide the …

You Kind Of Have To Prove It: Gender Microaggressions Within The Lived Experiences Of Women In Engineering, Crystal Rose Diaz-Espinoza
You Kind Of Have To Prove It: Gender Microaggressions Within The Lived Experiences Of Women In Engineering, Crystal Rose Diaz-Espinoza
Doctoral Dissertations
This intrinsic case study explored the lived experiences of women within three engineering majors at a mid-sized institution in the Mid-Atlantic using gender microaggressions (Nadal, 2010; Sue, 2007) as a theoretical lens. Data included individual interviews with 28 participants as well as document review from Web pages and observations from physical spaces within the campus engineering building. Data analysis resulted in seven themes in congruence with Sue’s (2007) taxonomy of gender microaggressions and further established the three levels of gender microaggressions distinguished by Nadal (2010). Findings also revealed that barriers within engineering were less visible or outwardly sexist, and that …
The Economic Implications Of Evolving Aviation Funding Policy In Tennessee, Hunter Pressley Mccracken
The Economic Implications Of Evolving Aviation Funding Policy In Tennessee, Hunter Pressley Mccracken
Masters Theses
The majority of state funding for capital improvements at Tennessee’s general aviation and commercial airports comes through grants awarded from the Tennessee Transportation Equity Trust Fund (TETF). Through a 4.5 percent sales and use tax on the consumption of aviation fuel, users help to fund the continued improvement and maintenance of aviation facilities around the state. Aircraft refueling operations associated with the FedEx “SuperHub” in Memphis were responsible for two-thirds of the TETF’s revenue for Fiscal Year 2014. In response to speculation that FedEx would relocate its refueling operations to reduce its fuel tax liability, the Tennessee General Assembly passed …

Interaction Between Primary Resources And Root Causes In Lean Production Systems, Ernest Anene Iwuchukwu
Interaction Between Primary Resources And Root Causes In Lean Production Systems, Ernest Anene Iwuchukwu
Masters Theses
A model to analyze lean systems reliability is developed based on the premises that lean production systems require four primary resources; materials, equipment, personnel, and schedule (Sawhney, R., Subburaman, K., Sonntag, C., Capizzi, C. and Rao, P.V., 2009). The four primary lean resources were independently analyzed, without due consideration to underlying relationships within each other. In this research, relationships and interaction between root-causes and lean primary resources were conceptualized and developed. The development applied a five-phase approach: 1. review of related literature, 2. decompositions of lean primary resources, 3. selection of consensus root causes items and questionnaire construct, 4. survey …
Automating The Data Reduction Process For More Efficient Flight Tests And Reducing The Time From Days To Hours, Joseph Kenneth Young
Automating The Data Reduction Process For More Efficient Flight Tests And Reducing The Time From Days To Hours, Joseph Kenneth Young
Masters Theses
The University of Tennessee Space Institute’s (UTSI) active airborne science program often requires extensive modification to its fleet of aircraft in order to meet mission and customer requirements. These modifications can alter the flight characteristics of the aircraft. In order to determine if the aircraft is safe to fly after modification and to find any new flight characteristics resulting from the modifications, the flight test engineer (FTE) must plan and conduct limited flight testing on the aircraft and evaluate the resulting data to ensure safety of flight. The more efficient the data reduction and analysis process the quicker the aircraft …
