Characterization Of Sr‐Doped Lamno3 And Lacoo3 As Cathode Materials For A Doped Lagao3 Ceramic Fuel Cell, Kevin Huang, Man Feng, John B. Goodenough, Michael Schmerling

Kevin Huang

Energy dispersive spectrometry line scan and ac impedance spectroscopy were used in this study to investigate the chemical reactions between two cathode materials, La0.84Sr0.16MnO3 (LSM), La0.5Sr0.5CoO3-δ (LSC), and the electrolyte La0.9Sr0.1Ga0.8Mg0.2O2.85 (LSGM). Significant interdiffusions of Co into LSGM and Ga into LSC were found at an LSC/LSGM interface even at relatively low fabrication temperatures. In contrast, only small interdiffusions of Mn into LSGM and Ga into LSM were detected at the LSM/LSGM interface even though it was fired at 1470°C. The …

Sr‐ And Ni‐Doped Lacoo3 And Lafeo3 Perovskites: New Cathode Materials For Solid‐Oxide Fuel Cells, Kevin Huang, Hee Y. Lee, John B. Goodenough

Kevin Huang

An improved cathode material for a solid‐oxide fuel cell would be a mixed electronic and oxide‐ion conductor with a good catalytic activity for oxygen reduction at an operating temperature T op ≥ 700°C and a thermal expansion matched to that of the electrolyte and interconnect. We report on the properties of Sr‐ and Ni‐doped LaCoO3 and LaFeO3 perovskites that meet these criteria. Single‐phase regions were determined by X‐ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis measurements were used to obtain the temperatures above which oxygen loss, and hence oxide‐ion conductivity, occurs. The conductivity and Seebeck measurements indicate the coexistence of both …

Gas-Diffusion Process In A Tubular Cathode Substrate Of A Sofc, Part Ii: Identification Of Gas-Diffusion Process Using Ac Impedance Method, Kevin Huang Feb 2015

Gas-Diffusion Process In A Tubular Cathode Substrate Of A Sofc, Part Ii: Identification Of Gas-Diffusion Process Using Ac Impedance Method, Kevin Huang

Kevin Huang

The effects of cathodic dc bias, bulk pO2, and effective O2 -diffusivity on ac impedance spectra of Siemens Westinghouse Power Corporation’s cathode-supported solid oxide fuel cells were systematically studied over a temperature range of 800 to 1000°C. It was found that the activation process dominated the overall electrode kinetics at 800°C, by which the applied dc bias reduced the electrode resistance considerably. With increasing the temperature to above 900°C, the activation process became effectively activated, leading to a visible arc at the lowest frequency on the impedance spectrum, which is relevant to the pore gas-diffusion process. Under this circumstance, lower …

Hydrophobic Hydrogel Caged H3Po4 As A New Class Of High-Temperature Proton Exchange Membranes With Enhanced Acid Retention, Qunwei Tang, Guoging Qian, Kevin Huang Feb 2015

Hydrophobic Hydrogel Caged H3Po4 As A New Class Of High-Temperature Proton Exchange Membranes With Enhanced Acid Retention, Qunwei Tang, Guoging Qian, Kevin Huang

Kevin Huang

We herein report a new class of high-temperature proton exchange membranes comprised of poly(acrylic acid-graft-hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide) (PAA-g-CTAB) or poly(acrylic acid)-graft-poly(ethylene glycol) (PAA-g-PEG) hydrophobic hydrogel caged H3PO4. The membranes exhibit reasonable proton conductivity, enhanced H3PO4 retention ability and low solubility in water, making them promising as potential high performance and robust electrolytes for high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Although the proton conductivity is still lower than that of H3PO4 doped PBI membranes, the new concept provides a different approach to proton exchange membranes for acid retention.

Gas-Diffusion Process In A Tubular Cathode Substrate Of An Sofc, Part I: Theoretical Analysis Of Gas-Diffusion Process Under Cylindrical Coordinate System, Kevin Huang Feb 2015

Gas-Diffusion Process In A Tubular Cathode Substrate Of An Sofc, Part I: Theoretical Analysis Of Gas-Diffusion Process Under Cylindrical Coordinate System, Kevin Huang

Kevin Huang

In this the first part of a two-part paper, the gas-diffusion process through a thick and porous tubular cathode substrate of a solid oxide fuel cell-(SOFC) was theoretically analyzed using classic Fick’s diffusion equation under the cylindrical coordinate system. The effects of current density, temperature, oxygen diffusivity or porosity, wall thickness, and bulk pO2 on the concentration (or pore in this paper) polarization were calculated and are presented graphically. The results clearly show a greater impact on pore polarization by current density, oxygen diffusivity, wall thickness, and bulk pO2, but not by temperature. In addition, …

An all solid-state tungsten–air battery using solid oxide–ion electrolyte is demonstrated as a new chemistry for advanced energy storage. The unique design of separated energy storage from the electrodes allows for free volume expansion–contraction during electrical cycles and new metal–air chemistry to be explored conveniently.

First Spectroscopic Identification Of Pyrocarbonate For High Co2 Flux Membranes Containing Highly Interconnected Three Dimensional Ionic Channels, Lingling Zhang, Xinyu Huang, Changyong Qin, Kyle Brinkman, Yunhui Gong, Siwei Wang, Kevin Huang Feb 2015

First Spectroscopic Identification Of Pyrocarbonate For High Co2 Flux Membranes Containing Highly Interconnected Three Dimensional Ionic Channels, Lingling Zhang, Xinyu Huang, Changyong Qin, Kyle Brinkman, Yunhui Gong, Siwei Wang, Kevin Huang

Kevin Huang

Identification of the existence of pyrocarbonate ion C2O52− in molten carbonates exposed to a CO2 atmosphere provides key support for a newly established bi-ionic transport model that explains the mechanisms of high CO2 permeation flux observed in mixed oxide-ion andcarbonate-ion conducting (MOCC) membranes containing highly interconnected three dimensional ionic channels. Here we report the first Raman spectroscopic evidence of C2O52− as an active species involved in the CO2-transport process of MOCC membranes exposed to a CO2atmosphere. The two new broad peaks centered at 1317 cm−1 …

Enhanced Methanol Oxidation And Co Tolerance Using Ceo2-Added Eggshell Membrane-Templated Pd Network Electrocatalyst, Qunwei Tang, Zhengping Mao, Shuguo Ma, Kevin Huang Feb 2015

Enhanced Methanol Oxidation And Co Tolerance Using Ceo2-Added Eggshell Membrane-Templated Pd Network Electrocatalyst, Qunwei Tang, Zhengping Mao, Shuguo Ma, Kevin Huang

Kevin Huang

Macroporous Pd and CeO2-added Pd network catalysts have been synthesized using eggshell membrane (ESM) as a template for enhanced methanol oxidation and CO tolerance. The microstructural characterization revealed a hierarchically ordered macroporous network of Pd reproducing the fibrous structure of ESM for a Pd-only catalyst, and a flower-like CeO2-decorated Pd morphological architecture for the CeO2-added Pd catalyst synthesized by a precipitation method. XRD patterns indicated Pd and CeO2 phases with good crystallinity. The cyclic voltammetry studies showed an enhanced electrocatalytic activity for methanol oxidation in acidic aqueous medium. Because of the preferential formation of Ce–CO bonds over Pd–CO bonds, the …

A Novel Solid Oxide Redox Flow Battery For Grid Energy Storage, Nansheng Xu, Xue Li, Xuan Zhao, John B. Goodenough, Kevin Huang

Kevin Huang

In this work we report proof-of-concept of a novel redox flow battery consisting of a solid oxide electrochemical cell (SOEC) integrated with a redox-cycle unit. The charge/discharge characteristics were explicitly observed by operating between fuel cell and electrolysis modes of the SOEC along with “in-battery” generation and storage of H2 realized by an in situ closed-loop reversible steam-metal reaction in the redox-cycle unit. With Fe/FeO as the redox materials, the new storage battery can produce an energy capacity of 348 Wh/kg-Fe and round-trip efficiency of 91.5% over twenty stable charge/discharge cycles. This excellent performance combined with robustness, environmental friendliness …

Gaze Controlled Human-Computer Interface, Steve Petkovsek, Kevin Huang, Binay Poudel Feb 2015

Gaze Controlled Human-Computer Interface, Steve Petkovsek, Kevin Huang, Binay Poudel

Kevin Huang

The goal of the Gaze Controlled Human Computer Interface project is to design and construct a non-invasive gaze-tracking system that will determine where a user is looking on a computer screen in real time. To accomplish this, a fixed illumination source consisting of Infrared (IR) Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) is used to produce corneal reflections on the user’s eyes. These reflections are captured with a video camera and compared to the relative location of the user’s pupils. From this comparison, a correlation matrix can be created and the approximate location of the screen that the user is looking at can …

Oxygen Permeation Through Cobalt-Containing Perovskites: Surface Oxygen Exchange Vs. Lattice Oxygen Diffusion, Kevin Huang, John B. Goodenough

Kevin Huang

The oxygen permeation fluxes from p′O2 to pnO2 (p′O2>pnO2) across cobalt-containing perovskite ceramic membranes La1−xSrxCoO3−δ and SrCo0.8Fe0.2O3−δ were measured by gas chromatography as functions of oxygen chemical potential gradient, temperature, thickness, and catalytic activity on the surface. Power indexes 0.5>n>0 for uncatalyzed La1−xSrxCoO3−δ and 1>n>0.5 for SrCo0.8Fe0.2O3−δ were obtained when JO2 vs. p′nO2p'′nO2 …
