First-Principles Studies On N-Type And P-Type Doping In Cuprous Oxide, Qiong Bai

Material Science and Engineering Dissertations

We have performed studies on n-type and p-type cuprous oxide with and without doping by first principles methods. Generalized Gradient Approximation (GGA) is used for the geometry optimization. The total energy and the final electronic structure calculations are conducted using the nonlocal screened Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof (HSE) hybrid density functionals approach for cuprous oxide. The HSE hybrid density functionals overcome the shortcoming of GGA, which gives a much reliable value of the band gap. The formation energies of native point defects in undoped cuprous oxide have been studied by HSE hybrid functional theory in two conditions, which are vacuum based condition and …

Bioengineering Theses

Cancer has been one of the leading causes of death worldwide that necessitates the development of theranostic systems for effective cancer management. Previously, we developed biodegradable-photoluminescent polymer coated magnetic nanoparticles (BPLP-MNPs) as a theranostic system for cancer management. These BPLP-MNPs were highly stable with excellent biocompatibility and consisted of magnetic targeting and imaging capabilities. However, these particles experienced reduced fluorescence due to the presence of dark/blackness of MNPs, which absorbs excited/emitted light. Therefore, it was hypothesized that surface modification on MNPs can overcome this limitation and enhance fluorescence for BPLP-MNPs.The goal of this research was therefore to employ various surface …

Pleiotrophin Enhance Nerve Regeneration Across Long Gap Peripheral Nerve Defects, Swarup Narayan Dash Jan 2012

Pleiotrophin Enhance Nerve Regeneration Across Long Gap Peripheral Nerve Defects, Swarup Narayan Dash

Bioengineering Dissertations

Peripheral nerve injuries resulting in extensive loss in nerve continuity pose a challenge in reconstructive surgery. Autografts still remain the treatment of choice for nerve defects despite the need of donor nerve harvest and the associated morbidity of this procedure. In contrast to short gap injuries, isografts achieve sub normal functional recovery for gaps longer than a critical 30 mm length, and simple tubularization methods fail completely. The regenerative failure of peripheral nerves through long gaps can be postulated to the lack of appropriate growth substrate and trophic support. We hypothesize that for successful nerve regeneration across long-gap nerve defects, …
