High Speed Rail or HSR with electric passenger trains operating at speeds of 250km/h or more is now operational in 11 countries and has been under recent consideration in Australia for future operation between Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney and Brisbane. The paper outlines HSR studies in Australia and conditionally quantifies the potential reduction of aviation fuel use at up to 0.5m litres per annum from the introduction of HSR by 2020 in Australia with a reduction of external costs at $540m per annum by 2020. This paper analyzes the impact on transient and frequency stability for a power system at very high wind penetration (40% wind). Wind penetration is based on the doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG), and a systematic approach has been adopted for wind power integration. A sensitivity analysis has been carried out for each wind integration scenario and for different wind generator loading conditions. A range of fault locations has been selected for stability analysis based on the proximity to synchronous generation and wind farms. This paper presents transient stability analysis for a power system with high wind penetration. The transient stability has been evaluated based on two stability criteria: rotor angle stability and voltage stability. A modified IEEE-14 bus system has been used as the main study network and simulations have been conducted at several wind power penetration levels, defined as a fraction of total system generation. The dose response of LiF:Mg,Ti (TLD-100) chips was measured from 1 to 50 000 Gy using 100 keV X rays at the European Synchroton Radiation Facility. Glow curves were deconvoluted into component glow peaks using a computerised glow curve deconvolution (CGCD) code based on first-order kinetics. The normalised dose response, f(D), of glow peaks 4 and 5 and 5b (the major components of composite peak 5), as well as peaks 7 and 8 (two of the major components of the high-temperature thermoluminescence (HTTL) at high levels of dose) was separately determined and theoretically interpreted using the unified interaction model (UNIM). …

VTT and Aalto University have supplied thin microstrip detector prototypes to CMRP for evaluation for the high spatial resolution dosimetry. The evaluation for dosimetry in microbeam radiation therapy (MRT) was done in a synchrotron microbeam at ESRF, France. Measurements studied a response of a single strip on the synchrotron microbeam in face-on and edge-on modes using CMRP designed and developed readout electronics for a parallel readout of single strips. Future generations of solid-state high-energy gamma imaging cameras require pixellated semiconductor photodetectors with the greatest possible detection efficiency. In this paper, a new type of planar silicon PIN photodiode is presented, in which both p+ and n+ electrodes are located on the same side of the device. The design offers highly efficient optical coupling between the backside and scintillator, providing a fill factor of close to 100%. The purpose of this study was to investigate a compact readout for silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) array in the development of high-resolution imaging detector to reduce the readout channels while maximizing the detectors performance. The detector module was composed of a LYSO scintillation crystal array and a SensL's SPMArray4. The crystal array was coupled to the SiPM array with a 2mm-thick silicone pad to improve the light sharing among the SiPM array elements. The feasibility of a recently designed metal–oxide–semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) dosimetry system for dose verification of high dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy treatment planning was investigated. MOSFET detectors were calibrated with a 0.6 cm3 NE-2571 Farmer-type ionization chamber in water. Key characteristics of the MOSFET detectors, such as the energy dependence, that will affect phantom measurements with HDR 192Ir sources were measured. The MOSFET detector was then applied to verify the dosimetric accuracy of HDR brachytherapy treatments in a custom-made water phantom. Three MOSFET detectors were calibrated independently, with the calibration factors ranging from 0.187 to 0.215 cGy∕mV. A distance …

In this paper we report the results of an extended study of the effect of sugar doping on the structural and electromagnetic properties of MgB2 superconductors. High values of the upper critical field (Bc2) of 36 T and the irreversibility field (Birr) of 27 T have been estimated at the temperature of 5 K in a bulk MgB2 sample with the addition of 10 wt% of sugar. The critical current density (Jc(Ba)) of sugar-doped samples has been significantly improved in the high field region. The value of transport Jc has reached as high as 108 A m-2 at 10 T …

This paper investigates the performance of a new technique for speech enhancement which combines Linear Predictive (LP) spectrum-based perceptual filtering to the recordings obtained from an Acoustic Vector Sensor (AVS). The technique takes advantage of the directional polar responses of the AVS to obtain a significantly more accurate representation of the LP spectrum of a target speech signal in the presence of noise when compared to single channel, omni-directional recordings. V2O5 nanomaterials including nanoribbons, nanowires, and microflakes have been synthesized by an ultrasonic assisted hydrothermal method and combined with a post-annealing process. The as-annealed V2O5 nanomaterials are characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) N2 adsorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). A room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) has been used as an electrolyte ([C3mpyr][NTf2] containing 1 M LiNTf2) in rechargeable lithium metal batteries by combining V2O5 nanomaterials as cathode materials.
