Multi-Disciplinary Engineering Research And Development Skills For Mining - A Case Study, C Cook, S Van Duin, Ian Porter

This paper discusses how advanced manufacturing technology (AMT), which is fundamentally reliant on and developed via multi-disciplinary skills, has benefitted non-mining industries, and what lessons can be derived from this experience to benefit the mining industry, particularly underground coal mining. Examples of AMT use in 'conventional' industry, some drawn from the more than 25 years experience in many different industries of the Automation and Robotics team at the University of Wollongong, are described to show typical benefits, risks and opportunities expected in using AMT. Applying AMT to mining brings many unique challenges and this paper expands on these and then …

Depth Maps Generation Through Thresholding In A Robotics System, H Shi, Christopher Cook
Christopher Cook
The project described in this paper aims to develop a simple but efficient method for mapping the depth of an object used in an industrial application. In order to produce the depth and cross-sectional images of an object the intensity threshold for converting the grey image to a binary image is varied. This operation will not produce a satisfactory result when the object is observed in air. The result will be however significantly different when the object is located in a colour liquid. Since the refraction of the light in the liquid varies with the depth, the intensity of the …

Extracting 3-Dimensional Information From Single Camera Vision System, H Shi, Christopher Cook, Fazel Naghdy
Christopher Cook
In this paper, a new approach for extracting three-dimensional information from single camera vision system is presented. Only one plan view of the object will be obtained from a camera when the object is placed in the air, even if the threshold of the camera is varied. The result will be however significantly different when the object is located in a colour liquid. It is due to high absorption of the light in a colour liquid. The amount of absorption varies with the depth of the liquid. This allows different plan views related to the depth of an object to …

Opportunities In Power Applications Of Superconductors, C Sloggett, Christopher Cook, S Dou, N Savvides, A. Secrett
Christopher Cook
Since the discovery of high temperature superconductors in 1986/87, rapid progress has been made in the development of these materials in forms suitable for engineering applications. Amongst the most important are flexible silver/superconductor composite wires or tapes capable of carrying tens of amperes at liquid nitrogen temperatures essentially without loss. Diverse applications in areas such as electricity supply, medicine industry and transportation now seem accessible and a total market in excess of US $l5O billion is forecast for the year 2020. A consortium consisting of Metal Manufactures Ltd. (MM), the University of Wollongong and CSIRO has produced high quality tapes …

Novel Control Techniques For Co2 Shielded Gas Metal Arc Welding, Dominic Cuiuri, John Norrish, Christopher Cook
Christopher Cook
The control strategies that have been developed over the past four decades to control the inherently unstable metal transfer in the CO2-shielded GMAW process are described. The fundamental reasons for poor arc stability with CO2 as a shielding gas are discussed. From an understanding of the process behaviour, a new process control technique is proposed, and the future direction of research in this area is discussed.

Novel Tooth Design For A Tubular Linear Motor For Machine Tool Axis, Philip Commins, Jeffrey Moscrop, Christopher Cook
Novel Tooth Design For A Tubular Linear Motor For Machine Tool Axis, Philip Commins, Jeffrey Moscrop, Christopher Cook
Christopher Cook
Permanent magnet tubular linear motors have shown potential for use as direct drives in high precision machine tools. These devices are capable of replacing the traditional ball screw, given their ability to overcome or reduce many of the fundamental mechanical properties that limit the precision performance of the ball screw. However, given the desire from industry to increase speed and acceleration, the physical size of the motor must be minimised while maintaining high force output to increase bandwidth in high precision applications. This paper presents a new optimal tooth design to reduce the frame size of a slotted tubular linear …

Transition Velocity Function For Impulse Control Systems, Stephen Van Duin, Matthias Ahlswede, Christopher Cook
Christopher Cook
This paper presents a modified impulse controller that is used to improve the velocity tracking of a servomechanism having characteristics of high nonlinear friction. A hybrid control scheme consisting of a conventional PID part and an impulsive part is used as a basis to the modified controller. This has previously been used to improve the position and velocity tracking of robot manipulators at very low velocities. Experiments show that at higher velocities the improved performance of the impulse part of the hybrid controller diminishes and can be counterproductive at these speeds when compared to conventional PID control alone. The modified …

Robotic Drilling Of Carbon Fibre, Marta Fernandes, Steve Gower, Friso Deboer, Christopher Cook
Christopher Cook
This paper describes ongoing research in control of robotic drilling using carbon fiber composites. This work has been motivated by the aircraft industry where there is a significant interest in automating part of the production process to improve productivity and consistency. The requirements for robotic drilling as well as the problems inherent in drilling composites are addressed in this paper. Forces and moments produced during the drilling process are measured and analyzed in order to develop a suitable control technique.
