Optimal Scheduling Of A Microgrid With Demand Response Resources, Daniela Proto, Guido Carpinelli, Fabio Mottola Dec 2014

Optimal Scheduling Of A Microgrid With Demand Response Resources, Daniela Proto, Guido Carpinelli, Fabio Mottola

Daniela Proto

A larger penetration of plug-in electric vehicle (EV) fleets and of data centres in the microgrids (μGs) is foreseeable in the near future. Their presence and the presence of distributed generation (DG) units represent a challenge for system operators in that they must identify approaches for using these distributed resources that allow them to operate the grid in a more efficient and economical way. With particular reference to EVs and data centres, it must be noted that they are equipped with storage devices that potentially could result in the modification of the daily load profile of μGs by shifting peak …

Creating A Stem Identity: Investment With Return, Janet Callahan, Patricia Pyke, Susan Shadle, R. Eric Landrum

R. Eric Landrum

Establishing a strong STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) identity at Boise State University, a metropolitan campus with approximately 3,655 undergraduate STEM students and a total undergraduate enrollment of approximately 19,042 (16,136 FTE) has been an important step toward creating a climate conducive to facilitating fundamental change. Examples of such change include building collaborations among faculty within and across departments, establishing the identity of students as part of a community beyond their chosen major, improving the efficiency and effectiveness of university systems, and perhaps most importantly, developing a framework to think deliberately about ways to effect change. This paper is …

Embodied Interaction With Visualization And Spatial Navigation In Time-Sensitive Scenarios, Yu-Ting Li, Juan Wachs

Yu-Ting Li

Paraphrasing the theory of embodied cognition, all aspects of our cognition are determined primarily by the contextual information and the means of physical interaction with data and information. In hybrid human-machine systems involving complex decision making, continuously maintaining a high level of attention while employing a deep understanding concerning the task performed as well as its context are essential. Utilizing embodied interaction to interact with machines has the potential to promote thinking and learning according to the theory of embodied cognition proposed by Lakoff. Additionally, the hybrid human-machine system utilizing natural and intuitive communication channels (e.g., gestures, speech, and body …

The Impact Of Technology, Katina Michael Sep 2014

The Impact Of Technology, Katina Michael

Professor Katina Michael

Consumer electronics have revolutionized the way we live and work. Most students that I know would rather forgo expensive clothing labels than do without their branded smartphone. In fact, some of them would forgo food altogether if it meant their phone could be “always on” and “always with them”, clipped onto the belt buckle, strapped into a pants or jacket sleeve or increasingly into the open palm of their hand. Something happens when our basic needs as humans are overtaken by some other need that was once a distant want at best- plainly confusion in our ability to rightly determine …

Railroad Privatization And Deregulation: Lessons From Three Decades Of Experience Worldwide, Randolph Resor, Philip Laird Aug 2014

Railroad Privatization And Deregulation: Lessons From Three Decades Of Experience Worldwide, Randolph Resor, Philip Laird

Dr Philip Laird

Railroads exist worldwide, on all inhabited continents. The rail industry began nearly 200 years ago as a series of privately financed ventures in the United Kingdom and the United States, but the ownership model rapidly evolved during the 19th Century. By the middle of the 20th Century, railroads in most parts of the world were government-owned.

Performance Monitoring Of A Permeable Reactive Barrier (Prb) For The Remediation Of Acidic Groundwater In Acidic Sulfate Soil (Ass) Terrain, Laura Banasiak, Buddhima Indraratna

Laura J Banasiak Dr

The treatment of acidic drainage contaminated with potentially toxic metals such as dissolved aluminium (Al) and iron (Fe) resulting from pyrite oxidation in acid sulfate soil (ASS) is a challenging problem requiring novel engineering solutions. Traditional remediation techniques of lime neutralization, groundwater manipulation (e.g. fixed-level weirs), tidal buffering (e.g. modified floodgates) are unsuitable due to their inherent inability to prevent pyrite oxidation and treat acid previously generated, as well as the risk of flooding during heavy rainfall events. As an alternative, the first permeable reactive barrier (PRB) with recycled concrete aggregates as the reactive material was installed in 2006 in …

Modeling Of Chemical Armoring In A Permeable Reactive Barrier (Prb) In Acid Sulfate Soil (Ass) Terrain, Laura Banasiak, Punyama Pathirage, Buddhima Indraratna

Laura J Banasiak Dr

The acidification of coastal waterways resulting from the oxidation of sulfidic minerals in acid sulfate soil (ASS) is a geo-environmental problem worldwide causing loss of biodiversity and agricultural productivity plus corrosion of concrete and steel infrastructure by acidic drainage. A permeable reactive barrier (PRB) of recycled concrete was installed on the Shoalhaven Floodplain, southeast New South Wales (NSW), Australia as an innovative and cost-effective technology for passive treatment of acidic groundwater in ASS terrain. A long-term laboratory column experiment simulating acidic groundwater flow through the PRB examined the acid neutralization behavior of recycled concrete and its potential to remove dissolved …

Development Of Miscible Blends Of Bisphenol-A Polycarbonate And Sulfonated Polystyrene Ionomers From Intrapolymer Repulsive Interactions, Robert Weiss Jul 2014

Development Of Miscible Blends Of Bisphenol-A Polycarbonate And Sulfonated Polystyrene Ionomers From Intrapolymer Repulsive Interactions, Robert Weiss

Robert Weiss

Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to characterize the phase behavior and interactions of blends of the free acid derivative and lithium and sodium salts of lightly sulfonated polystyrene (MSPS) with Bisphenol A polycarbonate (PC). The blends exhibited upper critical solution temperature (UCST) phase behavior and a miscibility window with respect to the sulfonation level. At a fixed blend composition, a minimum in the cloud point temperature occurs at the sulfonation level marking the middle of the miscibility window. The miscibility window depended on the sulfonate cation used. No interactions involving either the carbonate …

Rheological Behavior Of Liquid Crystalline Polymer/Polymer Blends, Robert Weiss Jul 2014

Rheological Behavior Of Liquid Crystalline Polymer/Polymer Blends, Robert Weiss

Robert Weiss

This paper reviews the literature on the rheological behavior of liquid crystalline polymer/polymer blends. The advantages of blending a LCP with a thermoplastic polymer is that the LCP serves as a processing aid and can also form a reinforcing phase. Rheology plays an important role in determining the morphology and hence the mechanical properties of these blends. This review also discusses the slow behavior of neat liquid crystalline polymers.

Synthesis And Thermal Properties Of Telechelic Poly(Lactic Acid) Ionomers, Robert Weiss Jul 2014

Synthesis And Thermal Properties Of Telechelic Poly(Lactic Acid) Ionomers, Robert Weiss

Robert Weiss

Telechelic poly(lactic acid) (PLA) ionomers were synthesized using a chemical recycling process. A transesterification reaction between a commercial PLA and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate or ethylene glycol was used to produce a hydroxy-terminated PLA. The hydroxy-terminated PLA was then reacted with itaconic anhydride to produce terminal carboxylic acid groups, which were neutralized with appropriate metal acetates to produce Na-, Li-, K-, Zn-, Ca- and Y-ω- and α,ω-telechelic PLA ionomers. 1H NMR spectroscopy was used to confirm the presence of the itaconic acid end-groups and FTIR spectroscopy was used to quantify the extent of neutralization. The addition of the ionic groups increased the …

Sulfonated Polystyrene Ionomers Prepared By Emulsion Copolymerization Of Styrene And Sodium Styrene Sulfonate, Robert Weiss Jul 2014

Sulfonated Polystyrene Ionomers Prepared By Emulsion Copolymerization Of Styrene And Sodium Styrene Sulfonate, Robert Weiss

Robert Weiss

Sulfonated polystyrene (S–PS), which is of considerable scientific and technological interest, has been traditionally prepared by the sulfonation of preformed polystyrene. This report describes the preparation and properties of S–PS prepared by emulsion copolymerization of styrene and sodium styrene sulfonate. S–PS prepared by copolymerization gave solubility, solution behavior and thermal characteristics that are consistent with an ionomeric structure. The solubility characteristics indicated some chain-to-chain sulfonate heterogeneity. Thermal analysis studies indicated that the glass transition does not increase with increasing sulfonate content. This is contrary to what has been observed for S–PS prepared by sulfonation and suggests that the S–PS prepared …

Development Of An Ionomer Tracer For Extruder Residence Time Distribution Experiments, Robert Weiss Jul 2014

Development Of An Ionomer Tracer For Extruder Residence Time Distribution Experiments, Robert Weiss

Robert Weiss

A polymeric tracer was developed from the tributylamine salt of lightly sulfonated polystyrene. The residence time distribution (RTD) measured for the extrusion of polystyrene with this tracer was compared with that measured using conventional particulate tracers, In general, the particulate tracers had a longer mean residence time and a broader RTD, which were attributed to increased mixing of the particulates.

Protonation Of Polyaniline With Lightly Sulfonated Polystyrene, Robert Weiss Jul 2014

Protonation Of Polyaniline With Lightly Sulfonated Polystyrene, Robert Weiss

Robert Weiss

Protonation of polyaniline base with lightly sulfonated polystyrene in polar solvents such as dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and N-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP) was investigated by UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy. The isosbestic point clearly shows that quinoid unit and semiquinoid unit are in equilibrium and is a function of the sulfonic acid concentration. The protonation of polyaniline is retarded in NMP compared to DMSO due to prevalent hydrogen bonding.

The Effect Of Deformation History On The Morphology Of Blends Of Polycarbonate And A Liquid Crystalline Polymer, Robert Weiss Jul 2014

The Effect Of Deformation History On The Morphology Of Blends Of Polycarbonate And A Liquid Crystalline Polymer, Robert Weiss

Robert Weiss

The effect of deformation history on the morphology and properties of liquid crystalline polymers (LCP) blended with polycarbonate resin was assessed. The addition of an immiscible LCP phase was found to improve the melt processability of the host thermoplastic polymer. In addition, by employing a suitable deformation history, the LCP phase may be elongated and oriented such that a microfibrillar morphology can be retained in the solid state.
