The Visual Arts In The Civilization Classroom, Thomas M. Carr Jr.
The Visual Arts In The Civilization Classroom, Thomas M. Carr Jr.
French Language and Literature Papers
Although the visual arts have long been a feature of civilization courses, instructors do not always exploit their full potential. This paper presents a checklist to help teachers identify the relevant aspects of the arts for study. Its goal is to facilitate comprehensive treatment of works of art by focusing on three areas: the aesthetic dimension, the social context, and the artist’s own experience. The checklist is followed by a series of activities which encourage students to integrate the various aspects of the arts while practicing their language skills.

Recognition Of Student Input In Computer-Assisted Language Learning, Carol Chapelle, Joan Jamieson
Recognition Of Student Input In Computer-Assisted Language Learning, Carol Chapelle, Joan Jamieson
Carol Chapelle
Computerized instruction has captured the interest of many educators as a means of individualizing language study for their students. The quality of this individualization is maximally dependent on the degree to which a computer can understand what the student communicates to it usually by typing a message on the keyboard. This article provides an overview of this student communication, or input: its types, its recognition, and some uses of its recognition. A general understanding of the potential of student-computer interaction will enlighten those who are examining Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) lessons for use in their curriculum. Some of this …

Two Paces East An Introspective View Of A Cross-Cultural Experience, Rebecca Ann Reagan
MA TESOL Collection
This is a cultural project, a personal journey through a five and a half year period of my life, a period when I lived in the East, primarily in Nepal and Japan. In this project I discuss the history and cultures of these two countries, particularly that of Nepal, including some of the customs and traditions, values and belief systems. I further discuss the influence that living in these cultures had on my life and my world view. To facilitate the organization of the paper, I have chosen to use a model proposed by Theodore Gochenour and Anne Janeway, "Seven …

Language is then described as a communication process involving linguistic, interactional and variational competence. The main part of this paper focuses on some innovative techniques by …
A Case Study Of A Child’S Acquisition Of Spanish As A Second Language, Jonathan Julian
A Case Study Of A Child’S Acquisition Of Spanish As A Second Language, Jonathan Julian
MA TESOL Collection
This paper is an individual case study of language acquisition. It is my intent to report the facts as they happened. The subject is my six-year-old stepdaughter, Gretchen, an energetic little girl who in the space of a year and a half achieved near-native proficiency in Spanish. She never attended one formal language class.
I have discovered through this study that dual cultural awareness through language allows for greater creativity within the individual and provides additional opportunity for personal growth and cognitive development. Certainly this has been true not only for the observed but for me, the observer, as well. …

The Cloze Procedure: A Measure Of Reading Comprehension Ability, Theresa Lorene Donaldson
The Cloze Procedure: A Measure Of Reading Comprehension Ability, Theresa Lorene Donaldson
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The present study was conducted in order to determine if a relationship exists between those comprehension processes measured by the Paragraph Comprehension subtest of the McGraw-Hill Basic Skills System Reading Test and the cloze test developed for this project. Two classes of undergraduate education majors enrolled in “Foundations of Performance-Based Education” were administered both the cloze test and the multiple choice comprehension test.
A correlation coefficient was computed between the summary scores on the McGraw-Hill and the summary scores on the cloze test. The results yielded a correlation of .021. These results did not support the research hypothesis.
The Effect Of Graphic And Phonemic Similarity On Syntactic Acceptability, Barbara D. Barket
The Effect Of Graphic And Phonemic Similarity On Syntactic Acceptability, Barbara D. Barket
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The main purpose of this study was to determine the effect of graphic and phonemic similarity on syntactic acceptability. Ten third graders were audio-taped reading material new to them at the end of the 1982-1983 school year. The children were given no assistance. Substitution miscues were recorded and analyzed according to The Goodman Taxonomy of Reading Miscues. Statistical analyses were carried out using the chi-square procedure and contingency coefficients were computed. The results indicate that graphic and phonemic similarity are somewhat related to syntactic acceptability but the relationship is very slight. Graphic similarity appears to be more independent of syntactic …
