Gender Differences In Education And Labour Market Outcomes, Kylie Hillman, Sheldon Rothman
Gender Differences In Education And Labour Market Outcomes, Kylie Hillman, Sheldon Rothman

Despite numerous changes in policy and legislation, issues of gender equity in the Australian education system and labour market remain a concern, particularly the poorer performance of males on tests of literacy and in rates of Year 12 completion. The results of research on the topic are summarised in this article. They suggest that although there is a statistically significant difference between the average levels of reading comprehension of male and female students, this difference may not extend beyond the classroom to seriously affect later outcomes. Males on average continue to progress, through both the education system and the labour …

Reports that the Longitudinal Literacy and Numeracy Study has traced the growth in literacy and numeracy of a single cohort of students in primary school. Number of children from a random Australia-wide sample of 100 schools formed the cohort; Understanding of the nature of growth in literacy and numeracy amongst Australian students.

A recent study of year 9 students' results on reading comprehension and mathematics tests, by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) found that a positive school climate is associated with higher literacy and numeracy test scores. In other key findings, socioeconomic status, language background, Indigenous status, gender and educational aspirations were found to have significant effects on achievement in both literacy and numeracy. Parents' education had a significant effect on literacy but not on numeracy. This article gives an overview of the findings.

Psychologist Hand-Scoring Error Rates On The Rothwell - Miller Interest Blank : A Comparison Of Three Job Allocation Systems, R Goddard, Robert Simons, W Patton, K Sullivan
Dr Robert Simons
Hand-scoring errors are known to occur on a range of psychological tests. The present study conducts an investigation into the existence of scoring errors by 27 professional occupational psychologists using the Rothwell - Miller Interest Blank (RMIB). Building on investigations into the impact of work allocation practices on work quality in other professions, the present study explored whether psychologist scoring error rates differed between three work allocation systems. Data from 1175 completed RMIB survey forms indicated that error rates for the three systems ranged from 5 to 16.3 per cent, with the self-managed work allocation system resulting in the lowest …

Curriculum debates tend to get mired in binary opposition: disciplinary versus interdisciplinary, skill versus project, cultural transmission versus critical analysis. This is not surprising, given the ostensibly competing moves towards national curriculum consistency on the one hand, and attempts to streamline, integrate and reconceptualise core curriculum on the other. The real issues, however, are far more substantial, and at once quite simple. This brief article picks up on some of them, and reports from the work of the Queensland New Basics project on some ideas that might help moving beyond binary opposition. This can be achieved by framing knowledge around …

Schooling Issues Digest : School Effectiveness, John Cresswell
Dr John Cresswell
There have been many developments in school effectiveness research since the 1960s when it was said that schools contributed little to the difference between students' outcomes. A number of processes associated with effective schools have been identified and these factors have been incorporated into school improvement programs. Continued detailed longitudinal research should allow for further evaluation of these factors which will lead to better learning outcomes for students.

Five Years On : Literacy Advance In The Primary Years, John Ainley, Marianne Fleming
Dr John Ainley
This report details the outcomes of Phase Three of the Literacy Advance Research Project that investigates the implementation of this system- wide reform to improve the literacy development and student achievement of students in Victorian Catholic schools. There are two components to the research for Phase Three which examines and compares the growth in literacy of two cohorts of students from the beginning of Year 1 to the end of Year 3, and it follows the literacy development of the first cohort of students who were in Year 1 in literacy at the different year levels. The study highlights the …

The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 is instrumental in the national movement toward the use of one short-answer test as the gate-keeping instrument to prevent or allow university graduates trained in education to enter the teaching profession. This investigation questions the wisdom of this test-based certification by looking at the impact on recent (university education program) graduates who have had difficulty passing the tests. Four of these graduates provided information via in-depth interviews. The interview data provide evidence that raises questions about the value of taking these people out of the teaching profession. The individuals provide evidence of …

OECD's Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) aims to measure how well students nearing the end of their compulsory schooling are prepared for adult life. This article discusses the findings and major issues coming out of the study. It also discusses PISA 2003, the next cycle of PISA which is taking place in Australia in 2004.

Factors Influencing Reading Achievement In Germany And Finland : Evidence From Pisa 2000, Dieter Kotte, Petra Lietz
Dr Petra Lietz
In this article the authors discuss the findings from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). The initiative was implemented by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in 2000. In a three-year cycle it was planned to compare the performance of 15-year-old students across member countries. The first cycle in 2000 focused on Reading, the second cycle in 2003 on Mathematics, and the third cycle in 2006 will concentrate on Science, with the other two areas featuring as minor components. The information gained from PISA is the basis on which the OECD develops some of the educational indicators …

When The Whole Is Less Than The Sum Of The Parts: Humanising Convergence In Iinteractive Systems Design, Steve Howard, Elizabeth Hartnell-Young, Graeme Shanks, John Murphy, Jennie Carroll
Dr Elizabeth Hartnell-Young
Convergence, viewed as the union of disparate technical solutions, is frequently proposed as a way of maximising value for end users: reducing the number of distinct technologies users have to purchase, learn and use. Yet few empirical studies of use and convergent technology have been reported. Though convergence as a catchphrase has had currency for over a decade now, a tension remains between those who argue for strong-specific solutions, i.e. carefully targeted ‘information appliances’, and those who prefer weak-general approaches, the ICT equivalent of the Swiss army knife. We describe the dynamic nature of the trade-off between usability and functional …
