Higher education in the United States has grown from a single course designed to educate administrators and faculty to serve within colleges and universities, to a robust field of study with hundreds of graduate programs across the country. Despite a lengthy body of research on college and university presidents, there is little to no research that demonstrates the efficacy of higher education programs to prepare their graduates to serve as presidents. The position of presidential assistant (PA) is a regularly occurring senior-level administrative position within institutions of higher education. PAs are instrumental to the success of the organization in which they work. Unlike many other higher education positions that fall into a specific hierarchy related to authority, the PA position does not often do so.
