Beyond Boundaries: Third Space Leadership In Schools, Corinne Brion

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

This case study is relevant to practicing and prospective leaders because it raises issues related to third space leadership. I define third space leadership as the spaces/places between school and home, school and before or after school programs, school, and extra-curricular activities, such as the commute in a school bus. Third space leadership is grounded in adaptive leadership, cultural proficiency, equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging. This teaching case study exposes educational administrators to a holistic approach to leadership that includes the in-between spaces that are integral parts and moments of students’ educational journeys. The Teaching Notes outline key concepts on …

The Effect Of Language Training In The Perceived Confidence Of Counseling Supervisors' Spiritual Integration In Supervisory Sessions, Wendy Celoria Aug 2024

The Effect Of Language Training In The Perceived Confidence Of Counseling Supervisors' Spiritual Integration In Supervisory Sessions, Wendy Celoria

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The religious and spiritual (R/S) aspects of multicultural counseling are difficult to navigate for counseling educators and supervisors. The supervisors’ responsibility is to equip counselors in training (CIT) to address various issues or topics confidently with clients. Multiculturalism continues to impact the counseling profession due to the diversity and complexity of treating clients. The spiritual component of multiculturalism remains a topic of broaching that can be uncertain for CIT and supervisors. This study describes the dynamics of supervisory relationships with supervisees and how that directly correlates with counselors and their clients. Next, the study evaluates the impact increased training in …

A Phenomenological Research On The Experiential Gains Of Filipino Special Education Exchange Program Teachers, Madonna Gervacio Gamez-Catiis

Untapped Potential? Understanding The Paraeducator-To-Teacher Pipeline And Its Potential For Diversifying The Teacher Workforce, Andrew M. Camp, Gema Zamarro, Josh B. Mcgee Aug 2024

Untapped Potential? Understanding The Paraeducator-To-Teacher Pipeline And Its Potential For Diversifying The Teacher Workforce, Andrew M. Camp, Gema Zamarro, Josh B. Mcgee

Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications

Paraeducators are among the largest categories of public education employees and are increasingly seen as a pool of potential teachers. However, little is known about paraeducator-to-teacher transitions. Using statewide administrative data, we show that while paraeducators may be more racially/ethnically diverse than the teacher workforce, Black and Hispanic paraeducators are less likely than White paraeducators to transition into teaching. We additionally show that teachers with paraeducator experience are similarly effective to teachers without paraeducator experience. Lastly, we use simulations to show that the potential for the paraeducator-to-teacher pipeline to diversify the teaching profession may be limited unless they are highly …

The Year-By-Year Primary And Secondary Education Histories Of Homeschooled Individuals And The Implications For Empirical Homeschooling Research, Albert Cheng Jun 2024

The Year-By-Year Primary And Secondary Education Histories Of Homeschooled Individuals And The Implications For Empirical Homeschooling Research, Albert Cheng

Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications

Many scholars have correctly noted the difficulty of obtaining representative samples of the homeschooling population. Empirical research about homeschooling, therefore, has predominantly relied on convenience samples which lack the external validity that enables one to generalize the findings to other segments of the homeschooling population. Unbiased inferences about the whole of the homeschool population have consequently been difficult to acquire (Kunzman & Gaither, 2022). For instance, empirical findings of college-educated homeschoolers or those from higher socioeconomic backgrounds might not generalize to other populations of homeschoolers (Cheng, 2014; Ray, 2009). Nor might findings about homeschooling families who rely on a structured …

Teacher Salary Raises And Turnover: Evidence From The First Year Of The Arkansas Learns Act, Gema Zamarro, Andrew Camp, Josh Mcgee, Taylor Wilson, Miranda Vernon May 2024

Teacher Salary Raises And Turnover: Evidence From The First Year Of The Arkansas Learns Act, Gema Zamarro, Andrew Camp, Josh Mcgee, Taylor Wilson, Miranda Vernon

Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications

Attracting and retaining high-quality teachers is a pressing policy concern. Increasing teacher salaries and creating more attractive compensation packages are often proposed as a potential solution. Signed into law in March 2023, the LEARNS Act increased Arkansas's minimum teacher salary from $36,000 to $50,000, guaranteed all teachers a minimum raise of $2,000, and added flexibility allowing school districts to deviate from seniority-based traditional salary schedules. To study school districts’ adjustments to the new legislation, we collected information about districts' teacher compensation policies one year before and the first year of implementation. We also integrated this data with teachers' administrative records …

While Administrators Fret, Prospective Law Students Are Losing Interest In U.S. News Rankings, James Owsley Boyd

Keep Up With the Latest News from the Law School (blog)

Prospective law students across the United States are paying less attention and giving less credence to the annual U.S. News & World Report rankings of American law schools, according to new research from scholars at the Indiana University Maurer School of Law and University of Kentucky Rosenberg College of Law.

“The Decline and Fall of the U.S. News Rankings” was published this week on the Social Science Research Network by Indiana Law Professor CJ Ryan and Brian Frye, Kentucky’s Spears-Gilbert Professor of Law.

Contrary to what many in the legal education community believe, a rise in the U.S. News rankings …

How Do Demographic Characteristics Of Homeschooling Households Influence The Way Homeschooling Is Practiced?, Albert Cheng, Angela Watson May 2024

How Do Demographic Characteristics Of Homeschooling Households Influence The Way Homeschooling Is Practiced?, Albert Cheng, Angela Watson

Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications

The legitimization of homeschooling during the COVID-19 pandemic and the emergence of new schooling models (i.e., hybrid homeschooling) potentially change the composition of homeschooling families and the way homeschooling is practiced. This study establishes pre-pandemic trends of the demographic composition of U.S. households who homeschool their children. This study also articulates a theory that the way families practice homeschooling is based on practical constraints imposed by household demographic characteristics and, to a lesser extent ideological reasons. These theories are empirically tested using the 2012, 2016, and 2019 waves of the National Household Education Survey and a sample of 1,468 homeschooling …

Administrators’ Views Of Teacher Salary Changes Under The Arkansas Learns Act, Gema Zamarro, Andrew Camp, Josh Mcgee, Miranda Vernon

Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications

  • We surveyed superintendents and principals statewide to understand their perspectives on the salary changes they implemented in response to the LEARNS Act and their future plans related to teacher compensation.
  • Administrators reported that the teacher compensation changes required by the LEARNS Act are likely to help them better recruit and retain teachers.
  • The primary goals administrators reported they have when designing teacher compensation include: being competitive with nearby districts, retaining existing teachers, and rewarding effective teachers.
  • Administrators anticipate offering across-the-board pay increases but also appear open to implementing bonuses for effective teachers in their district.
  • Most administrators, 69% of principals …
