In today’s classrooms, some students struggle to achieve at high levels in math. Yet, recent research describing the neuroplasticity of the brain means that, with a mathematical mindset, all students can achieve in math at the highest levels in school. Unfortunately, some capable students disengage from the subject due to a fixed mindset or holding beliefs in math myths, such as only some people are born with a math brain or math is about speed. Achievement in math can open more opportunities in a student’s future. Entrance into college and various careers that require mathematical skills become possible when students …

Shifting Educators' Perspectives On The Purpose Of Play And Play-Based Learning, Emily Mueller Aug 2024

Shifting Educators' Perspectives On The Purpose Of Play And Play-Based Learning, Emily Mueller

Culminating Experience Projects

Play is a research-based, developmentally appropriate practice for children, supporting both their social-emotional development and academic learning, but there exists differences between Early Childhood Education (ECE) teachers in how play is viewed and used. ECE teachers’ perspectives on the purpose of play affects the practices they implement in their classrooms. If educators have limited perspectives on the purpose of play, they are not likely to implement or advocate for certain, necessary types of play and play-based learning in their classrooms. This is especially pertinent when the pressure to teach standards through formal instruction is present in many ECE classrooms. This …

Developing Conflict Resolution Skills In Residential Students At Higher Education Institutions, Lindsey A. Bos Aug 2024

Developing Conflict Resolution Skills In Residential Students At Higher Education Institutions, Lindsey A. Bos

Culminating Experience Projects

For many college students, living on campus is the first experience that students have living outside their familial home. Students may take this leap with people they have developed prior relationships with, or with people they have just met. Regardless, this collision of differing norms has the potential to lead to interpersonal conflict. To support residential students at higher education institutions, this project utilizes the theoretical lenses of Maslow’s (1943) hierarchy of needs, Sanford’s (1966) challenge and support theory, and Chickering’s (1969) seven vectors of development to create a workshop curriculum aimed at developing students’ conflict resolution skills. Highlighting the …

Undocumented And Unsupported: How College Students Navigate To Meet Their Basic Needs, Mario Alberto Gonzalez

Master's Theses

The cost of attendance at colleges and universities across the United States has risen exponentially year after year. Among these costs include tuition, lodging, food, textbooks, academic materials, and health care, many of which are considered “basic needs” that are ultimately essential for human survival. At the same time, certain groups of students continue to be marginalized and presented with additional barriers in accessing higher education in equitable ways. Undocumented students are one of these groups of students, and are the focus of this study. Although the passage of DACA in 2012 presented opportunities for approximately 800,000 undocumented students, it …

BACKGROUND: There is increasing focus on the development of high-quality simulation models for medical education. Cadaveric models, although considered more realistic, may be difficult to obtain and costly. The advent of three-dimensional (3D) printing has offered a low-cost, reliable, and reproducible alternative. This study sought to compare the utility of 3D-printed to cadaveric models for training in transcutaneous injection laryngoplasty (TIL).

METHODS: A simulation course with a cross-over design was employed. Video laryngoscopes were utilized for both the 3D and cadaveric models to assess the accuracy of injection into the vocal fold. Pre-procedure and post-procedure surveys were administered to evaluate …

Trauma exposure may have a negative impact on students within the K-12 setting. Whether through first and secondhand accounts, trauma may affect students in areas that can lead to academic, psychological, and social emotional developmental concerns. Lasting impacts of trauma can affect cognitive, affective, behavioral, psychological, relational and self-attribution domains, and can lead to psychiatric disorders such as anxiety, borderline personality disorder, depression, etc. (O’Neill et al., 2010, pg. 190). When the brain is affected by neuroanatomical and neurophysiological changes a child’s language is impaired, which affects their ability to comprehend ultimately leading to effects on a child’s ability to …

Using A Flipped Course Design To Increase Positive Outcomes In First Year Science, Technology, Engineering, And Mathematics (Stem) Courses, Jennifer Bourbina Aug 2024

Using A Flipped Course Design To Increase Positive Outcomes In First Year Science, Technology, Engineering, And Mathematics (Stem) Courses, Jennifer Bourbina

Culminating Experience Projects

In the United States racially minoritized students are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields (Fry et al., 2021). Minoritized students have a reduced chance of attaining a STEM degree in part because of the stratification in the K-12 educational system and practices in post-secondary education that disproportionately benefits the dominate class (Griffith, 2010; Johnson, 2007; Martusewicz et al., 2015; Theobald et al., 2020; Thompson, 2021). In the U.S. the K-12 system does not equally prepare students for higher education, yet most STEM courses are taught in a way that assumes all students have the same baseline skills …
