Individuals, Ethics, And Empathy Of Mind, Nancy Cantor Aug 2005

Individuals, Ethics, And Empathy Of Mind, Nancy Cantor

Chancellor's Collection

The Socratic question, "How should one live?" is a central motivating one for ethics.1 Today, I would like to consider three animating questions that fall within this concern:

• What are the challenges for an ethical person as a member of a community?

• What form do these challenges specifically take in our 21st-century society/world?

• What is the best way to tackle these challenges within university communities?

Alice Parker: American Choral Composer, Arranger, And Educator, Gail H. Fleming

This investigation is an in-depth examination of Alice Parker's philosophy of music in relation to choral teaching, arranging, and composing. The researcher proposes that within the context of multi-cultural American music, Alice Parker's unique approach to music making and how it is manifested within her choral compositions, arrangements, and teaching techniques is a significant and valuable area of study for music educators and students. Playing With Stories: Sporting Narratives And The Deliberation Of Moral Questions, Matthew A. Masucci May 2005

Playing With Stories: Sporting Narratives And The Deliberation Of Moral Questions, Matthew A. Masucci

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the relationship between sporting narratives and morality. More specifically, I investigate how people can draw upon sporting experiences, as expressed in narrative form, to help shape and inform their moral choices. Moreover, I argue that reflecting on sporting experiences in a particular way can have a profoundly valuable impact on our moral choices, thus, helping to improve us morally. In addition, I argue that sporting narratives play a crucial moral role due, in large part, to their pervasiveness and accessibility. Drawing from, and expanding on, the practical tradition of narrative ethics, and …

Is There A Need To Debate The Role Of Higher Education And The Public Good?, Sandra Fisher May 2005

Is There A Need To Debate The Role Of Higher Education And The Public Good?, Sandra Fisher

Articles

Calls for sustaining and increasing investment in higher education are often made on the basis that higher education is a `public good'. The idea of higher education as a public good is frequently conceptualized in terms of its contribution to economic development. If more people participate in higher education then society as a whole will benefit. Outside of the economic benefits of higher education there is less debate as to what is meant by `public good' in the context of higher education. This paper explores higher education as a public good and its role in realizing the public good (Jonathan …

Thwarted Ambition: The Role Of Public Policy In University Development, Michael N. Bastedo Mar 2005

Thwarted Ambition: The Role Of Public Policy In University Development, Michael N. Bastedo

New England Journal of Public Policy

Paradoxically, Massachusetts is the home of a world-class system of private higher education and a struggling system of public higher education. The influence of private higher education and persistent indifference by state government repeatedly thwarted UMass’s ambition to increase its stature on the national scene. The result was a “boom or bust” cycle of financial support that made rational planning and institutional expansion extremely difficult, exacerbating the university’s late start toward world-class status.
