Global Learning Through Partnered Inquiry, Rebecca Hovey May 2009

Global Learning Through Partnered Inquiry, Rebecca Hovey

Rebecca Hovey

The emergence of Global Learning associated with the internationalization of U.S. higher education signals a convergence of international/global studies and international education with the potential to dramatically innovate and transform the academy. Over the past decade the original aim of international education to foster intercultural understanding has become linked with the aims of international studies to enhance our knowledge of the world, and in particular, the ways in which new knowledge is created through non-western epistemologies and cultural perspectives. This paper seeks to situate the emerging discourse and initiatives around global learning in an understanding of the transformation potential of …

The Ethnographic Experience: Experiential Learning Via Ethnographic Practice, Rebecca Hovey

Rebecca Hovey

Ethnography and experiential learning share assumptions on the primacy of everyday lived experience for learning culture. Institutional And International Community Development: World Learning/Sit Case Study, Rebecca Hovey Jan 2009

Institutional And International Community Development: World Learning/Sit Case Study, Rebecca Hovey

Rebecca Hovey

In this workshop we posed the question: How to engage with/build partnerships or solidarity with communities in Global Service-Learning? This case study describes SIT Study Abroad programs as a form of community-based education: integrating community members as mentors, educators and part of the local “faculty”. This has profound implications in terms of academic content, knowledge generation, who benefits from the projects and accumulated knowledge gained from field service, and the global citizen responsibilities of the home university in terms of fair intellectual property and labor.

Questions In The Answers Of Primary School Education In Sierra Leone, Samuel Hinton Dec 2008

Questions In The Answers Of Primary School Education In Sierra Leone, Samuel Hinton

Samuel Hinton

The purpose of this paper is to review current issues in pre- and primary school reform and to pose questions on the long-term implications of present day solutions. Such an exercise will open up discussion on the probable effects of educational policy decisions with a view to minimize negative effects brought on by new policies. Because data collection in Sierra Leone is embryonic and unreliable, it is difficult to be definitive in planning future reform in education based on available data. The civil war between 1989 and 1999 practically shut down the educational system. Some of the obvious steps taken …

Perspectives On Cultural-Sustainability, National Unity And The Possibilities Of Multicultural Education In China, Samuel Hinton Dec 2008

Perspectives On Cultural-Sustainability, National Unity And The Possibilities Of Multicultural Education In China, Samuel Hinton

Samuel Hinton

China is a rapidly developing multiethnic country facing several difficult challenges such as pollution and growing income inequality, which in turn threaten social stability. In addition, China must address ethnic conflict, particularly in urban, autonomous, and border regions. The government is advocating national unity education content in the school and college curriculum to help abate the problem. Multicultural education is a potentially effective process that could provide a framework for addressing social, economic, political, and educational inequalities in China. Multicultural education could help teachers in China and other multiethnic countries to positively nurture the learning experiences of minority students, and …

Street Children In Sierra Leone Who Forgive Those Who Physically And Sexually Abuse Them, Samuel Hinton Dec 2008

Street Children In Sierra Leone Who Forgive Those Who Physically And Sexually Abuse Them, Samuel Hinton

Samuel Hinton

Adults in Sierra Leone and some other sub-Saharan countries who are in combat in various groups have unashamedly used and abused children in selfish and dastardly wars, says Hinton (educational studies, Eastern Kentucky U., Richmond). He conducted a study involving 36 street children from the provincial capital Bo and the national capital Freetown, interviewing them not so much about their experiences during the war, but how they felt later about those who had wronged them. He reports his findings here in such chapters as the problem and its setting; children in crises, theology, theory, and poverty; failed peace and retrospective …
