Counter Narratives Of Black Female Educators In Exurban Schools, Monisha Douglas Moore Jan 2020

Counter Narratives Of Black Female Educators In Exurban Schools, Monisha Douglas Moore

All ETDs from UAB

This study explored how three Black female educators characterized their personal narratives regarding their teaching experiences. Guided by a social justice framework, this study attempted to show how Black women’s identities have been co-created, how their perceptions of success have been formulated, and how perceptions of academic success have helped them frame their pedagogy for diverse students. Because limited research has examined how Black female educators in exurban areas situated their perceptions and pedagogy to facilitate the needs of diverse students, this study added to the limited knowledge. Purposeful sampling was conducted at the site and participant level. The research …

Developing High School Students' Historical Empathy Skills Using Historical Dialogues: A Qualitative Study, Nefertari Yancie Jan 2020

Developing High School Students' Historical Empathy Skills Using Historical Dialogues: A Qualitative Study, Nefertari Yancie

All ETDs from UAB

This qualitative case study explored how perspective writing, in the form of historical dialogues, had the potential to help high school students in an urban school develop historical empathy skills. The study took place in an 11th grade United States history class where three types of data, interviews with the teacher, observation field notes, and student work, were collected over one school semester. Findings indicate that when presented with counter-narratives that introduce the experiences of groups that have been historically marginalized through U.S. history, students are more easily able to make personal connections and empathize with people from the past. …

A Critical Narrative Inquiry Into The Lived Experiences Of African American Male K-12 Novice Educators In An Urban School District In Central Alabama, Herbert Leon Blackmon Jr

All ETDs from UAB

The purpose of this study is to share how African American/Black male K-12 novice educators navigated their own educational journey to become K-12 educators in an urban school district in central Alabama. An urban school district was identified from findings from the Census Bureau and had a school that sat inside an urbanized area and inside a principal city with a population of 250,000 or more. Because of its size, urban school districts were diversified with a large enrollment and an increased number of minority students. By using a qualitative, critical narrative inquiry approach, participants were able to recount their …

Perceptions Of Assistant Principals Of Curriculum And Instruction Regarding The Effectiveness Of Their Role, Patton Barrett Furman Jan 2020

Perceptions Of Assistant Principals Of Curriculum And Instruction Regarding The Effectiveness Of Their Role, Patton Barrett Furman

All ETDs from UAB

This qualitative phenomenological study explored what assistant principals of curriculum and instruction (APCIs) in a large metropolitan area in central Alabama thought about the effectiveness of their role. APCIs are an emerging role in school administration, therefore there is limited research involving APCIs, including whether the position is effective in practice. More research is needed that pertains to the assistant principal role, but more specifically it is needed for those assistant principals charged primarily with curriculum and instruction (Gurley, Peters et al., 2015). My study will help to fill the gap by looking at the perceptions of current APCIs. This …

Research questions served as the framework for this study, including the following: (1) How do participants describe their perspectives and experiences as teacher candidates in the process of completing edTPA? (2) How do teacher candidates describe how edTPA influences their perspectives on …

Vascular Hemodynamics And Blood Pressure Differences Between Young And Older Women, Brantley Ballenger Jan 2020

Vascular Hemodynamics And Blood Pressure Differences Between Young And Older Women, Brantley Ballenger

All ETDs from UAB

Background: CVD is one of the main causes of death in the United States, and hypertension is a primary risk factor of this disease. Therefore, the primary causes of hypertension need to be identified so they may be addressed for treatment. Hypertension is known to be brought on by factors such as obesity, smoking, and age, but more knowledge is needed to address why otherwise healthy individuals suffer from the condition. Additionally, knowledge is needed on identifiable predictive measures which have association with hypertension to decrease the progression of CVD. Purpose: Compare blood pressure with hemodynamic values and identify factors …

A Preliminary Analysis On The Effects Of Acute Beetroot Juice Intake On Glycemic And Blood Pressure Control In Type 2 Diabetes, Braxton Linder

All ETDs from UAB

Cardiometabolic diseases are becoming increasingly prevalent in modern society due to low activity lifestyles and poor nutrition. Inorganic dietary nitrate (diNO3) has shown to potentially improve cardiometabolic health in a number of different populations but remains to be corroborated in humans with type 2 diabetes (T2D). This preliminary analysis aimed to determine the effects of consuming an acute, concentrated dose of diNO3 containing beetroot juice (BRJ) on hemodynamic and glycemic responses in humans with T2D while controlling for pharmacological influences. Three participants with a clinical diagnosis of T2D were recruited into this study. Pulsewave Velocity (PWV) was used to assess …

Using A Mindfulness-Based Intervention With Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder To Decrease Disruptive Behavior In The Early Childhood Inclusion Classroom, Erica Lee Jan 2020

Using A Mindfulness-Based Intervention With Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder To Decrease Disruptive Behavior In The Early Childhood Inclusion Classroom, Erica Lee

All ETDs from UAB

This study examined the effects of a mindfulness-based intervention on the presence of disruptive behavior in children with autism spectrum disorder in the early childhood inclusion classroom. Students with emotional dysregulation are not equipped with the ability to manage their own behavior. This often leads to major disruptions in the general education setting, interfering with the student’s learning and the learning of others. An ABAB single-case research design was conducted on four students with autism between the ages of five and eight to determine the effects of a mindfulness-based intervention on their disruptive behavior patterns. The researcher adapted a mindfulness-based …

Evaluation Of The Effectivenss Of Rotc Army Cadet Exercise Training For The Army Combat Fitness Test, Jake Mintz Jan 2020

Evaluation Of The Effectivenss Of Rotc Army Cadet Exercise Training For The Army Combat Fitness Test, Jake Mintz

All ETDs from UAB

The purpose of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of ROTC Army cadet exercise training for the Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT). A secondary purpose was to evaluate the effectiveness and perception of a remote training program. The cadets performed an 8-week training program that consisted of similar movements to the movements seen on the ACFT. Following 8 weeks, the cadets retested the ACFT. Performance measures were in-creased in the scores and scoring variable of the 3-repetition deadlift and 2-mile run (p < .005). The overall testing score also improved significantly. These results imply that an 8-week training program focusing on movements similar to those tested by the ACFT could improve ACFT score.

The purpose of the qualitative case study was to explore the development of logico-mathematical knowledge in twenty 5- and 6-year-old children in Kuwait. The researcher conducted the study in a real-life bounded system over approximately two-months. The researcher utilized constant comparison analysis to interpret the responses of children during clinical interviews to explore hierarchical classification and seriation as two types of logico-mathematical knowledge. The researcher also observed children and used constant comparison analysis to interpret the behaviors of children throughout physical knowledge activities to explore the nature of each child’s thinking. The central research questions were: 1) What types of …
