Transformative Learning Through Cultural Immersion, Rebecca A. Addleman, Carol J. Brazo, Tatiana Cevallos

Faculty Publications - College of Education

This qualitative study explored avenues to increase students’ intercultural competence through transformative learning. School of Education graduate students and faculty from a small, private university traveled to Ecuador to participate in a cultural immersion practicum. In addition to these primary goals, the trip was designed to facilitate transformative learning about cultural conceptions, diversity, and the dynamics of student differences with the goal of understanding one’s own cultural framework and adapting to another culture to develop empathy towards culturally and linguistically diverse students in the United States.

An Investigation Into How Measures Of Student Teacher Performance That Indicate Developmentally Informed Practice Are Related To A Measure Of Overall Student Teaching Proficiency At A Private Northwest Comprehensive University, Thomas D. Buchanan Mar 2011

An Investigation Into How Measures Of Student Teacher Performance That Indicate Developmentally Informed Practice Are Related To A Measure Of Overall Student Teaching Proficiency At A Private Northwest Comprehensive University, Thomas D. Buchanan

Doctor of Education (EdD)

Indicators of the proficiency of teacher candidates at applying knowledge of child development to teaching and learning was examined to see if they predict the overall success of the candidates full-time student teaching. The assessment instrument, the Full-Time Student Teaching Summary Report (FSTSR), was found statistically reliable and suitable for further analysis. While it was found that selected measures of student performance, when taken together, significantly predict 92% of the score of overall student teaching performance, it was also found that this may be misleading because of the problem of multicollinearity in the predictor variables. A secondary hypothesis was formed …

Program Improvement And Practice: In-Service And Pre-Service Student Teaching Reflections, Joan Hoskins Ph.D., Christine T. Schuette Ph.D., Margaret L. Charlton Med Jan 2011

Program Improvement And Practice: In-Service And Pre-Service Student Teaching Reflections, Joan Hoskins Ph.D., Christine T. Schuette Ph.D., Margaret L. Charlton Med

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

A qualitative study was conducted with graduates (in-service teachers) and pre-service teacher candidates from a traditional elementary education program to explore perceptions of the student teaching process and its impact on teaching philosophy and practices. The program graduates and pre-service teachers described their experience as valuable, but believed their knowledge of pedagogy and classroom management to be deficient. The value of the internship process and implications for program improvement are discussed. Theory without practice is dead, and practice without theory is blind. — Anon

A Weighty Issue: Finding The Balance Between Justice And Mercy In The Classroom, Ruth Givens Jan 2011

A Weighty Issue: Finding The Balance Between Justice And Mercy In The Classroom, Ruth Givens

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

Considering the conundrum educators face with administering ethical decisions concerning their students, the author discusses the options of Immanuel Kant and John Stuart Mill, which utilize rationalism to adjudicate decisions requiring issues of equity in their classrooms. However, the author addresses the conflicts inherent among Christian educators whose spiritual perspectives transcend rational presuppositions as the only methods to make decisions that contribute balance and fairness to those deciding between justice and mercy.

Christian Special Educators Responding To The Call To Serve: The Perception Of Disability With A Christian Worldview Lens, Nilsa J. Thorsos Jan 2011

Christian Special Educators Responding To The Call To Serve: The Perception Of Disability With A Christian Worldview Lens, Nilsa J. Thorsos

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

Most Christian special education teachers respond to a call to teach children with disabilities and are inspired to share the plan, purpose, and perspective of Christ; in other words to have the mind of Christ (Tucker, 1996, p. 29). This paper examines how the Old and New Testament traditions permeate the way people with disabilities are perceived in Western culture. An examination of the Old Testament shows a perception of disability as connected with sin, a manifestation of God’s punishment and exclusion of people with disability from the temple (Winzer, 1993, p. 17). The New Testament provides narratives of compassion …

The Effect Of Professional Development On A Mexican Mission School: A Case Study, Vickie S. Cook Jan 2011

The Effect Of Professional Development On A Mexican Mission School: A Case Study, Vickie S. Cook

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

Since the early 1990s, there has been a growing body of literature regarding the facilitation of deeper thinking among educators based on the opportunity for in-service professional development (Darling-Hammond, 2003; Garet, Porter, Desimone, Birman, & Yoon, 1999, 2001; Reeves, 2010; Smith & O’Day, 1991). In-service professional development provides teachers with the opportunity to consider alternative solutions to teaching and learning situations. Providing solid professional development is the goal of schools globally. This effort can be challenging to small private schools that are pouring as many resources as possible into the necessary materials and curricula for their students. Few budget resources …

Book Review: Creation Regained – Biblical Basics For A Reformational Worldview, Heekap Lee Jan 2011

Book Review: Creation Regained – Biblical Basics For A Reformational Worldview, Heekap Lee

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

It is my hope that most Christian educators have read Wolter’s book, Creation Regained. Since it came out two decades ago, this book has had a tremendous impact on Christians to be equipped with sound Christian worldviews, a sense of identity, and godly responsibilities. However, one may ask, “Does this book say something about the roles and functions of a Christian education?” In fact, it does. This book provides many practical ideas and applicable points regarding teaching and learning in faith-based settings. In fact, Wolter’s revisions to his original manuscript emphasize the proper role of a Christian education. I …

Reflective Collaboration Practices To Explore Personal Belief Systems In Teacher Preparation Courses, Kathryn Picano Jan 2011

Reflective Collaboration Practices To Explore Personal Belief Systems In Teacher Preparation Courses, Kathryn Picano

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

The purpose of this article is to examine the need for intentionally designed faith integration conversations to explore the personal belief systems and concerns of teacher candidates through the use of effective reflective collaboration strategies in their preparation courses. The influence of one’s prior experiences and personal belief system cannot be underestimated when working effectively in a pluralistic society. This necessitates that all teachers be cognizant of how their belief system shapes interactions with students and families, as well as how they plan for instruction. Student voice and reflective collaboration techniques are important instructional tools that can be integrated into …

A Case For Student Teacher Placement As Preparation For Future Urban Educators, Debra S. Espinor Jan 2011

A Case For Student Teacher Placement As Preparation For Future Urban Educators, Debra S. Espinor

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

Do schools of education effectively train young, white, and middle-class teacher candidates to work in urban classrooms? How can schools of education prepare teachers and future teachers for classrooms that are diverse in terms of race/ethnicity, nationality, social class, language and other differences (Nieto, 2004) Classrooms that used to be homogeneous are now diverse, yet the predominant face and gender of the teacher has remained the same. Dramatic inequalities exist in the access that students around the globe have to an excellent, high quality education; inequalities that are lamentably too frequently based on race, social class, language, and other differences …

Book Review: Fair Play: The Ethics Of Sports, Dane C. Joseph Jan 2011

Book Review: Fair Play: The Ethics Of Sports, Dane C. Joseph

Faculty Publications - College of Education

During the past few years of my collegiate and youth-club coaching career, I have often found myself engrossed with many intellectual tasks in an attempt to improve both myself and my athletes' chances for success. Moral reasoning is, quite frankly, usually at the back of my mind, and only seems to come forth after some ethical problem arises that affects our team. Perhaps one reason for this neglectful behavior is that in contemplating the right course of action to take, I have often picked up books on sport ethics and frowned with dismay as its contents Jay embedded in a …

Plans To Live On A Reservation Following College Among American Indian Students: An Examination Of Transculturation Theory, Terry Huffman Jan 2011

Plans To Live On A Reservation Following College Among American Indian Students: An Examination Of Transculturation Theory, Terry Huffman

Faculty Publications - College of Education

This paper focuses on American Indian college students and uses transculturation theory to examine factors related to self-reported plans to live on a reservation following completion of college. Transculturation theory assumes a strong cultural identity is fundamental to academic success. The author uses the basic premise of this perspective to consider an extension to its assumptions. Findings indicate that an implied assumption of the transculturation perspective is that American Indians closely aligned with traditional culture tend to seek careers in which they serve Native communities and more likely plan to live on a reservation after college.

Scholarship In The Gfu School Of Education: High Expectations And High Commitment, Ken Badley, Marc Shelton Jan 2011

Scholarship In The Gfu School Of Education: High Expectations And High Commitment, Ken Badley, Marc Shelton

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Christian scholarship is more than this, but it is also mainly an opportunity to tell our stories to peers in our respective content disciplines - and in telling our stories, we are in fact telling God's story of partnering with us in his work. We fully intend this White Paper to be used as a resource within the School of Education and as a way of informing groups outside of the SoE about our work as scholarship, or in another way of saying it, about our work as learners - with both humility and service.

Part One: Introduction & Methodology …

Preservice Teacher Application Of Differentiated Instruction, Amy Lynn Dee Jan 2011

Preservice Teacher Application Of Differentiated Instruction, Amy Lynn Dee

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Successfully implementing the practice of inclusion by differentiating instruction depends on both the skills and attitudes of general education teachers. New general education teachers who are entering the field are particularly vulnerable to the demands and stress of the profession, and teacher education programs must prepare preservice teachers to meet the needs of all students by teaching the skills needed to make appropriate lesson adaptations, accommodations, and modifications. This study investigates the manifestation of differentiation for special education students in work sample lesson plans written by preservice teachers working toward an elementary school credential. The research examined the nature, characteristics, …

Book Review: The Role Of Religion In 21st-Century Public Schools, Amy Lynn Dee Jan 2011

Book Review: The Role Of Religion In 21st-Century Public Schools, Amy Lynn Dee

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Excerpt: "Jones and Sheffield have collected essays that speak to a broad range of interests surrounding the topic of religion in public schools. From Jones’s commentary on the emotional underpinnings and historical context of the role of God in classrooms of children, to an account of the limitations of the establishment clause, and past a couple of reports on prayer in schools, the work takes readers through a course of chapters that touch upon many of the themes most popular in arguments about religion in school. Twelve unique chapters written by a diverse group of scholars grant the collection a …
