Teachers’ Beliefs Towards Learners’ Heritage Languages Inside Schools In A Multilingual Setting, Ivian Boruchowski Phd
Teachers’ Beliefs Towards Learners’ Heritage Languages Inside Schools In A Multilingual Setting, Ivian Boruchowski Phd
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study adds to the conversation about the increasing language diversity in U.S. schools (Paris & Alim, 2014). In the South Florida district discussed here, ELLs represent 16.9% of the total student enrollment (Miami Dade, 2020), and there is a popular narrative about the value of bilingualism in this community. Despite that, Valencia and Lynch (2019), Mackinney (2016), and Lanier (2014) indicated: even though the bilingual political and economic value in South Florida is noticeable, HLs are relegated to a secondary place and with no prestige inside local school settings.
As Garcia and Wei (2014) observed: "language practices cannot be …
Characterization Of Endophytic Microbiomes Of Medicinal Plants For Their Antimicrobial Activities, Ganesh Khadka
Characterization Of Endophytic Microbiomes Of Medicinal Plants For Their Antimicrobial Activities, Ganesh Khadka
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Emerging new infectious diseases and developing antimicrobial resistance are serious global health threats. New approaches are needed for the discovery and development of new antimicrobial compounds with novel modes of action to overcome the problem of resistant microbial pathogens. There has been increasing interest in the discovery of endophytes, an important component of plant microbiome that live within plant tissues as potential key sources of novel antimicrobial compounds. Medicinal plants are generally considered excellent sources of bioactive compounds produced by endophytes. South Florida with its unique sub-tropical humid climate has botanical gardens, private orchards, and nurseries with vast collections of …
"We Need Educational Confession": A Philosophical Inquiry Of Curriculum As Confession, Christopher M. Cruz
"We Need Educational Confession": A Philosophical Inquiry Of Curriculum As Confession, Christopher M. Cruz
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation theorizes curriculum as confession and attends to questions of justice, selfhood, and the pursuit of truth. An inquiry on confession is atypical among traditional educational dissertations because the practice is normally associated with religious institutions as opposed to schools or higher education. Moreover, confession is something usually associated with guilt or shame, not with traditional educational discourses of learning, teaching, or curriculum. As a result, confession is overlooked within educational discourse.
I argue, however, that confession always occurs because curriculum is the site of subjective educational experience. Taking part in the reconceptualist tradition of the curriculum field, curriculum …
Lift Every Voice: A Narrative Study Of The Lived Experiences Of Black Female Educators In Public Schools, Rachelle A. Surrancy
Lift Every Voice: A Narrative Study Of The Lived Experiences Of Black Female Educators In Public Schools, Rachelle A. Surrancy
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Black female educators (BFE’s) are becoming an anomaly in public school education. This decline, which can be traced back to the period of desegregation, has persisted, as Black female educators comprise only 5% of the current teacher workforce; and this at a time when their presence is needed and critically important to the successful educational experiences and outcomes of all students, but particularly Black students. While much of the research focused on Black female educators has centered around factors contributing to their decisions to leave the field, this dissertation, through the critical lenses of Critical Race Theory (CRT), and Black …
Means To An End: A Qualitative Interview Study On Medical Students And Debt, Alberto Juan Diaz Jr
Means To An End: A Qualitative Interview Study On Medical Students And Debt, Alberto Juan Diaz Jr
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Today, 43.4 million Americans owe 1.7 trillion dollars in student loan debt (Hanson, 2022). The American Association of Medical Colleges (2021) reported that 73% of medical students graduate with educational debt, of which the average medical student borrowed $203,062 in student loans. The problem addressed through this study is that as the narrative about student loan debt grows, the hegemonic understanding of debt revolves around the undergraduate student's experience and their eminent struggles regarding repayment of student loans and employment. However, limited research exists on how medical students understand and experience debt.
Several researchers have discussed the lack of understanding …
An Interpretive Analysis: Black Men, Masculinities, And The Field Of Tropic Play, Mario D. Lewis
An Interpretive Analysis: Black Men, Masculinities, And The Field Of Tropic Play, Mario D. Lewis
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
While much has been written about the participation of Black Men in higher education, such scholarship has often been predicated on empirically derived insights that have privileged phenomenological experiences as a primary point of departure for analysis. While this literature has done much to illuminate how higher education scholars and practitioners understand what Black men pursuing higher education experience, I use this study as an opportunity to think differently about this demographic and those experiences.
With the aim of not only providing nuanced understanding of Black men in college, but also a general methodological shift in how they are studied …

Due to its nuanced character traits, slow violence has been allowed to persist within our society for centuries, resulting in impacts that have historically reached catastrophic proportions. With a focus on the education realm, this study describes the impact of school specific slow violence on marginalized communities. The purpose of this study was three-fold: (1) It sought to investigate how school specific slow violence has impacted the lives of Black and Latinx folx, (2) to explore how survivors of school specific slow violence made meaning of the experiences, and (3) investigate its influence on co-researchers’ agency via activism as we …
A Phenomenographic Study Of K-8 Mathematics Teachers’ Conceptualizations And Their Accounts Of Enacting Integrated Stem Education, Elizabeth Forde
A Phenomenographic Study Of K-8 Mathematics Teachers’ Conceptualizations And Their Accounts Of Enacting Integrated Stem Education, Elizabeth Forde
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Students’ mathematics performance in the United States and internationally continues to cause concern among educators, researchers, and policymakers. This concern coupled with a re-energized interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) has resulted in calls to revisit the approaches used in teaching mathematics. A promising pathway for improving students’ problem-solving skills and mathematical understanding is through integrated approaches (Burghardt et al., 2010; Chiappetta, 2009) as is currently being practiced in STEM education. One of the major stakeholders and catalysts in implementing this transformative possibility is mathematics teachers. Teachers’ conceptualizations and approaches to instruction affect student learning outcomes (Srikoom et …
An Exploratory Examination Of The Financial Knowledge, Attitudes, Capabilities, And Socialization Of Black College Students And Their Lived Experience Of Personal Financial Management, Joycelyn C. Morris
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Financial literacy and education have become hot topics in the U.S. The research of the Black community within this field of study is limited and existing research findings are bleak. The purpose of this study was to understand the financial knowledge, behaviors, and socialization of Black college students. Many existing studies seek to understand financial literacy through quantitative inquiry solely, however this study used a concurrent mixed method research design to obtain a holistic understanding of the research questions while minimizing biases.
The quantitative portion of the study consisted of a survey administered online and grounded in the Family Financial …

Adult Learner Attrition Analysis: At-Risk Hispanic Males In New York City Transfer Schools, Jason Joseph Almodovar
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Adult Basic Education (ABE) initiatives in the United States of America reintroduce high school dropouts to alternative diploma granting pathways. These pathways have one pivotal goal: to graduate high school dropouts. Hispanic males have the highest dropout rates in New York City alone. ABE programs, like New York City Transfer Schools (NYCTS), try to decrease Hispanic male attrition. This study examined Hispanic male high school attrition among other enrolled female and racial subgroups in NYCTS.
This quantitative study consisted of analyses of the 2015 NYCTS cohort (N = 5,205). Logistic regression, chi-squares and crosstabulations revealed that Hispanic male students …

A Culturally Sustaining Book Club: The Examination Of African American Students' Motivation And Literacy Achievement, Brittney C. Jones
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Culturally sustaining pedagogy includes centering students’ cultural identities, languages, and practices in the classroom. Such practices have had positive effects on the reading achievement and motivation of African American students. In particular, communalism and interdependence are cultural themes that are preferred by African American students and parents. Book clubs are a long-standing literacy activity that centers student voices and social interactions as the basis of student learning.
This mixed-methods intervention study was conducted to determine the effects of a culturally sustaining book club on second and third-grade African American students’ motivation and reading achievement at a Title I school as …

Understanding The Lived Experiences Of Academic Advisors Utilizing Coaching Skills And Techniques, Jennifer C. Halpern
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Students who need help and support often find themselves not getting the help they need or not knowing who to go to. Advisors at FlU have been trained to use college life coaching skills and techniques to help students who are going through a difficult time. The problem is that although most of the advising community has attended these trainings it seems that not every advisor may be utilizing the coaching skills and techniques with their students for a variety of reasons, and it is because of those different reasons that may be leading to missed opportunities for advisors to …

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative interview study utilizing phenomenological methods investigates the experiences of three male teachers who exited Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS).
The goal was to identify their rationales for resigning from M-DCPS. Using phenomenological methods, this study reduces individual experiences with the phenomenon of being a male teacher to a description of the essence of the participants’ experiences. The participants were chosen from M-DCPS because it is the fourth largest school district in the country, and it is grappling with teacher attrition just as many other large, diverse, urban districts in the nation. Three participants who shared the characteristics of …

How Ethnic Minority Single Mothers Characterize The Influences That Led Them To Leave The Teaching Profession, Janelle Bravo-San Pedro
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Teachers are leaving the profession at high rates. Salary, support, and workload are factors that have contributed to this phenomenon. Teachers who are single mothers and are the sole providers of their households in all aspects, including financial, emotional, and physical find themselves questioning their career choice and the constant inner struggle of being an effective teacher and super mom. Little research has explored the personal lives and responsibilities of educators, particularly those of single mothers, to understand and address their needs and reasons for leaving the teaching profession. This research holds implications for policy, practice, and future scholarship on …

Abstract
Exploring the Perceptions and Adaptability of Behavioral Intervention Teams During COVID-19: A Qualitative Interview Study
by
Amanda Louise Niguidula
When first established, Behavioral Intervention Teams' primary purpose was to reduce and prevent campus violence. More recently, these Teams' focus expanded beyond mitigating on-campus violence to a more general concern with student mental health and well-being (Randazzo & Plummer, 2009; Sokolow et al., 2014, Sokolow & Lewis, 2009, Van Brunt, 2016). BITs are present at nearly all higher education institutions, and studies show that they are a key component for preventing and responding to campus violence (Van Brunt, 2016). Although …

Retention Of Beginning/Novice Teachers Who Sign Out-Of-Field Waivers, Heather Dawn Tyler
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Research investigating teacher shortage and teacher retention is well known. There is little research focusing on the retention outcomes of beginning/novice teachers who sign Out-of-Field Waivers. This nonexperimental, quantitative research study was conducted to describe the retention outcomes of beginning/novice teachers in Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS), the fourth largest school district in the U.S. The project focused on three academic school years/cohorts (1,037 beginning/novice teachers). Of the 1,037 new teachers, 128 of them signed Out-of-Field Waivers. The results indicated that signing an Out-of-Field Waiver was not associated with leaving the school district, and beginning/novice teachers hired in schools with …
"You've Been Accepted"?: Homonormativity And The Imagination Of Queer Higher Educational Spaces, Faye D. Pelow
"You've Been Accepted"?: Homonormativity And The Imagination Of Queer Higher Educational Spaces, Faye D. Pelow
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Spaces of higher education are often over-simplified in social science discourse, but their histories and evolutions are anything but straightforward. As colleges and universities have developed from institutions of religious social order to sites of perceived tolerance and exploration, they have also emerged as significant queer spaces. Indeed, some institutions of higher learning have even gained reputations for being particularly “LGBTQ+-friendly” safe spaces. Yet it is important to understand the social, political, moral and economic underpinnings upon which these establishments have been built and desire to uphold. Despite efforts to promote inclusivity, university spaces are also situated within an intricate …
The Relationship Between Gifted Selection Criteria And Student Performance On Fifth-Grade Science Achievement, Teresa Vega Cereijo
The Relationship Between Gifted Selection Criteria And Student Performance On Fifth-Grade Science Achievement, Teresa Vega Cereijo
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Education policymakers have struggled for decades to provide equal opportunities for all students. Persistent disparities exist between subgroups of students, based on factors such as race, disability, ethnicity, and socio-economic status (SES), which leads to over-representation of minority students in special education and their under-representation in gifted education. Efforts to ensure equity in school districts in identification and support of minority and low SES students have been lagging. Failing to reach students’ potential and educating them with appropriately challenging curriculum is a disservice not only to them, but also to our nation. Although gifted programs were developed with the intent …

I argue that the themes of mindfulness, flexibility, balance, community, and empathy that were found in the interviews are …
Something American, Carolina S. Souto
Something American, Carolina S. Souto
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
SOMETHING AMERICAN is a poetry collection written from the perspective of a first-generation American navigating a growing family, a political crisis, and a global pandemic. Influences on this collection include Robert Hass’s THE ESSENTIAL HAIKU and FIELD GUIDE, which attend to nature and the poet-speaker’s immediate surroundings with diligence and precision. Ariel Francisco’s place poems and creative titles in ALL MY HEROES ARE BROKE provide important touchstones for Souto’s commitment to here-and-now writing. And Sylvia Plath’s frank and complex writing about motherhood in ARIEL grants the poet permission to probe these subjects as well.
In SOMETHING AMERICAN, experimental poems sprawl …

The Impact Of Demographic, Academic, And Financial Variables On Predicting Four- And Six-Year Graduation At An Urban, Public, Hispanic-Serving Institution, Maria Rosado
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Despite the rapid growth of the underrepresented population in the U.S., institutions of higher education have not experienced as rapid a growth in their underrepresented student population. Furthermore, it is estimated that in the next few years, more than 40% of jobs will require a postsecondary degree. As the underrepresented population continues to grow nationally and the job market is increasingly requiring job seekers to hold a postsecondary degree, it has become vital that the U.S. and states focus on educating and graduating its growing underrepresented population. The purpose of this study was to determine what demographic, academic, and financial …
