Empowering Latino students to pursue careers in astronomy/physics is possible if we find the correct way to help them. Astronomy can help our planet, and physics teaches us how to appreciate our earth and everything around us. Currently, Latinos are underrepresented in these careers. This senior capstone examines the different ways that schools could empower Latino students to pursue careers in astronomy/physics. Through the use of literature review, interviews with two teachers and one astronomer, and an anonymous survey of students, the result findings indicate that introducing careers in astronomy/physics to Latino students at a young age could spark their …

This paper explores the importance of including multicultural awareness in school classrooms. Multiculturalism has been defined as the process of recognizing, understanding and appreciating cultures other than one's own. This study answers the following research questions, What is multiculturalism? Why is multiculturalism beneficial to students? How can teachers incorporate multiculturalism into classroom instruction? In a review of literature on the importance of incorporating multiculturalism, the research shows that there are many benefits and reasons to why multiculturalism should be incorporated in classrooms. The focus of this Capstone Project is on the effects the COVID-19 pandemic has had on students' success. This is important because the level of student advocacy during this unprecedented time is a direct reflection of some of the deeper issues surrounding equity engraved into the current education system. This Capstone project is focused on providing families and students with meals during a pandemic. The majority of students in California are enrolled in a free or reduced breakfast and lunch program. Due to virtual learning it has become increasingly more difficult for students to be provided with school meals. Schools give opportunities to students to pick up their lunches but this is not beneficial for students with a lack of transportation or two working parents. Engaging in physical activity is essential to one’s well-being, especially for a child since their body is still in the developing stages. Since there is less emphasis on being physically active, the value of physical activity decreases over time. In recent years arts education programs in schools have been drastically reduced or eliminated due to economic challenges. Underfunded schools are forced to focus on the mandated curriculum. Though it is proven that arts education increases a student’s academic performance it is not funded at the same level components of academia. The Monterey Jazz Festival (MJF) assists schools in Monterey County that are suffering from the absence of art education. Arts education programs can provide the necessary skills students need for future success, including communication skills and confidence. The Turnaround Arts program at Rosa Parks Elementary School has advanced overall student success, particularly benefiting students in Special Education. Both Special Education teachers and the Arts Specialist at Rosa Parks Elementary were interviewed and the Turnaround Arts Program was observed.
