This course portfolio documents my evaluation of my teaching methods and student learning in an Evidence law course. My goal was to document positive outcomes associated with applied learning through a flipped course structure. The data, however, suggests that more research is necessary to determine whether there is a strong correlation between a flipped course and student learning. The data suggests students are generally performing as expected in the course. It also indicates that providing lectures and problem sets before class is effective but may not be more effective than providing them in class, suggesting the timing of the lectures …

With the cost of college on the rise, and students increasingly viewing college as a pathway to a successful career, colleges and universities are under increasing pressure to demonstrate evidence of their effectiveness. High-impact learning experiences, such as internships, study abroad, service-learning, capstones and undergraduate research, have emerged as a promising practice to enhance student development during college; however, few studies have examined the impact of such practices on post-graduate indicators of success. The Lacy School of Business at Butler University (Indianapolis) has embraced an experiential approach for the school’s Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree program by combining traditional classroom instruction with opportunities for students to learn through partnerships with local businesses. Beginning with the MBA Gateway Experience course, graduate students are tasked with conducting team research to present informed recommendations to business owners and community leaders. This benchmark portfolio describes the process of developing and assessing student learning in Psychology of Gender (PSYC/WMNS 421/821)—a course I taught in Spring 2019 while participating in the Peer Review of Teaching Project at the University of Nebraska Lincoln. Many beginning teachers feel unprepared to teach students in their inclusive classrooms. Preservice teachers may need applied learning experiences, intentionally focused on understanding of individuals with disabilities as human rather than as their disability or label. This paper shares an applied learning project couched in the principles of Universal Design for learning completed by students in a course about disabilities. Two Student Choice Project examples are shared to demonstrate the process for completion and to provide preliminary evidence of how this project facilitated transformation of student perceptions, built awareness, and improved openness and objectivity in understanding individuals with disabilities.

A Phenomenology Of Mimetic Learning And Multimodal Cognition: Integrating Experiential Knowledge Into Programs In Rhetoric, Composition, And Technical Communication, Kevin R. Cassell

My dissertation emphasizes a cognitive account of multimodality that explicitly integrates experiential knowledge work into the rhetorical pedagogy that informs so many composition and technical communication programs. In these disciplines, multimodality is widely conceived in terms of what Gunther Kress calls “socialsemiotic” modes of communication shaped primarily by culture. In the cognitive and neurolinguistic theories of Vittorio Gallese and George Lakoff, however, multimodality is described as a key characteristic of our bodies’ sensory-motor systems which link perception to action and action to meaning, grounding all communicative acts in knowledge shaped through body-engaged experience. Incorporating National Incident Management System training and exercise principles into homeland security and emergency management learning can help university students develop emergency response capabilities through practical application of knowledge in simulated incidents. This article stretches the boundaries of the meaning of applied learning to include online learning activities. The DEAL model of critical reflection was used to obtain student feedback in comparing two delivery strategies of an upper- division online leadership capstone course. Student reflection comments were analyzed for offerings of the course in summer and fall semesters. The fall delivery of the course adopted an applied reading summary strategy which required students to specifically apply their learning to their work and career plans. The DEAL model of critical reflection provided rich qualitative data evaluating teaching approaches and suggested students preferred applied …
