Leyva worked last semester in the office of Congresswoman Doris O. Matsui, monitoring and updating the U.S. Representative’s social media outlets and website with her press secretary, handling faxes and telephone calls from her constituents from the Sixth Congressional District in Sacramento and helping create a video montage for her with Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, minority leader of the U.S. House of Representatives. Leyva also helped draft an op-ed editorial for Congresswoman Matsui, wrote letters to her constituents, researched legislation, sifted through newspaper articles from across the country, and, when she had time, led tours on Capitol Hill.

This project was undertaken as a collaboration between students in Professor Robert Glover's 2012-2013 "Engaged Policy Studies" course, Orono Town Planner Evan Richert, and Orono Town Manager Sophie Wilson. The objective was to examine the university and community perceptions of Orono as a "college town" with focus on the Orono downtown area.

Dr. Michael Richard Dillon (1942-2020) was a Professor and Chair of the Political Science Department at La Salle University in Philadelphia. He grew up in Wilmette, Illinois, a suburb just outside of Chicago, where he spent many years before opting to attend the University of Notre Dame for his undergraduate and, later, his graduate and doctoral degrees. Dr. Dillon first came to La Salle in 1968, where he spent 17 years as a member of the Political Science Department under the Chair at the time, Robert Courtney.
