Bringing Underserved Staff Online @ Lmu, Jamie G. Hazlitt, Raymundo Andrade May 2019

Bringing Underserved Staff Online @ Lmu, Jamie G. Hazlitt, Raymundo Andrade

Jamie Hazlitt

One tangible benefit of working at a university is the number of opportunities for continuing education. At LMU, these resources abound for white-‐collar, professional staff. But results from a 2010 survey initiated by the library and ITS indicated that the majority of respondents from LMU Facilities employees were unaware that library and technology workshops (which take place year-round) were offered at all. Through grassroots efforts, Raymundo Andrade and Jamie Hazlitt opened the lines of communication with facilities administration, offered basic technology and English language training opportunities for service staff, and tangibly improved the technology skills and enriched the lives of …

Information Literacy Outreach In A Fake News World, Debbie Morrow May 2018

Information Literacy Outreach In A Fake News World, Debbie Morrow

Debbie Morrow

In a “post-truth” society how do we sustain an informed citizenry, the underpinning of our democracy? What news is “fake” and which facts are “alternative”?  Crucially, how do we educate students to evaluate the information they encounter in a variety of contexts and disciplines? How can librarians take the lead in teaching that "authority is constructed and contextual"? This session offers some ideas culled from outreach and contact opportunities around campus during the last year [2017].

Reflections On Math Students’ Circles: Two Personal Stories From Colorado, Diana White, Lori Ziegelmeier Jun 2016

Reflections On Math Students’ Circles: Two Personal Stories From Colorado, Diana White, Lori Ziegelmeier

Lori Beth Ziegelmeier

Math Students’ Circles provide an opportunity for mathematicians to work in their communities to engage young students in mathematics as a human, aesthetic, and social endeavor. Sometimes referred to simply as Math Circles, these venues give mathematicians experience in introducing children to topics not typically seen in school curricula in an exciting, hands-on format. This article explores two Math Students’ Circles (MSCs) in the state of Colorado from the point of view of two pre-tenure faculty members. One participated in MSCs for four years while working on her Ph.D. in mathematics, the other started an MSC as an offshoot of …

Outreach Practices Of A Small College Counseling Center: A Comprehensivemodel To Serve The College Community, Jessica R. Ferriero Apr 2014

Outreach Practices Of A Small College Counseling Center: A Comprehensivemodel To Serve The College Community, Jessica R. Ferriero

Jessica R Ferriero

Over the past 10 years college counseling centers (CCCs) have been urged to broaden their focus considerably and to serve the entire campus community due to increases in student mental health issues. Engaging in outreach efforts is one way to address campus wide needs. However, few research efforts have been conducted to systematically investigate how outreach is practiced at a small college. The dialogue around outreach has focused on single programs at large institutions rather than the network of interventions that occur on a campus. The purpose of this study is to understand the web of relationships between a counseling …

Impact Of Engineering Ambassador Programs On Student Development, Thalia Anagnos, Alicia Lyman-Holt, Claudia Marin-Artieda, Ellen Momsen

Thalia Anagnos

This study highlights the positive impact of participation in an engineering ambassador program on students from two universities: Oregon State University which is a large public university in a college town with a 13% minority student body, and Howard University, a medium sized private university with a relatively small engineering program in an urban setting enrolling a primarily minority population. Although these ambassador programs have a major goal of service to the university and engineering program, they serve an equally important goal of developing the skills and attitudes of the ambassadors themselves. Ambassadors from both universities were surveyed, and though …

Changing Strategies For Electronic Theses And Dissertations: Communication Between An Academic Library, Graduate School, Academic Departments, And Students, Lyndsey E. Calico, Cleophus V. Price, Adrian K. Ho, Jonathan Garrett Mar 2013

Changing Strategies For Electronic Theses And Dissertations: Communication Between An Academic Library, Graduate School, Academic Departments, And Students, Lyndsey E. Calico, Cleophus V. Price, Adrian K. Ho, Jonathan Garrett

Adrian K. Ho

Technology has eliminated the need for paper copies of theses and dissertations in an academic library. The latest practice for receiving, reviewing, and archiving graduate student scholarship is to have students submit their electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) to an institutional repository (IR). The University of Kentucky Graduate School and the University of Kentucky Libraries have teamed to create a new workflow for the online submission of ETDs to UKnowledge, the University's IR. To ensure the success of the workflow, clear and efficient communications between the library, the graduate school, academic departments, and students are imperative. This presentation addresses the …

Enabling And Encouraging Greater Diversity In Ict, Madeleine Rh Roberts, Tanya Mcgill Jan 2013

Enabling And Encouraging Greater Diversity In Ict, Madeleine Rh Roberts, Tanya Mcgill

Madeleine R. H. Roberts

There is now a far greater level of heterogeneity in the university cohort in age, experience and cultural and socio-economic backgrounds than in the past. This means that assumptions about the equality of student knowledge and ability that may still exist could be causing difficulties for female and male students who are not school leavers or native English speakers. The issues faced by mature-age, international, and low socio-economic background female and male students are diverse and the potential strategies to assist in retaining current students and attracting future students are varied. Therefore, the strategies employed must address as many of …

Ten Tips For Implementing A Successful Embedded Librarian Program, Kelly Heider

Kelly Heider

In January of 2006, Indiana University of Pennsylvania Libraries began a successful embedded librarian program in the university’s College of Education and Educational Technology. The program has improved the library’s relationship with faculty and students; shaped a more relevant collection of print, media, and electronic resources that meets curriculum, instruction, and research needs; created opportunities for college/university library collaboration through new programs, team-teaching, and scholarly endeavors; and, most importantly, improved the quality of teaching and learning in the College of Education. The following article outlines the strategies IUP Libraries used to hire an embedded librarian, develop that librarian’s presence in …
