Food Handling Practices Of High-Risk Populations, Bobby Babak Rasulnia Jan 2008

Food Handling Practices Of High-Risk Populations, Bobby Babak Rasulnia

All ETDs from UAB

Populations such as the immuno-compromised (HIV/AIDS, chemotherapy, and transplant patients) and those with chronic conditions (gastric illness, cirrhosis, on anti-microbial therapy, antacid medication and steroid medications) are more susceptible to food borne illness. Examining differences in food handling practices and personal characteristics of high-risk groups verses the general population is the focus of this research. This study is based on secondary data from an established quantitative survey instrument developed and administered by the 2001 FDA Food Safety Survey. Descriptive, chi square, and logistic regression methods were used in the analysis. A statistically significant relationship was not found between health status …

Examining Pre-Service Instructors' Use Of Powerpoint Based On Pre-Service Students' Perceptions: A Mixed Methods Study, Jennifer Fritschi Jan 2008

Examining Pre-Service Instructors' Use Of Powerpoint Based On Pre-Service Students' Perceptions: A Mixed Methods Study, Jennifer Fritschi

All ETDs from UAB

This study explored pre-service instructors’ use of PowerPoint based on pre-service students’ perceptions, and it identified pre-service students’ perceptions of the efficacy of specific elements of PowerPoint design and delivery. The effectiveness of various elements of PowerPoint design and delivery was based on an extensive literature review and was framed on the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia (Mayer, 2000). The findings of the study identified pre-service instructors’ practices and pre-service students’ perceptions of the effectiveness of specific elements of design and delivery and were then compared with what research and expert literature purported were effective. This one year study was conducted …

Staff Nurses' Level Of Diabetes And Diabetes Management Knowledge After A Diabetes Lecture-Based And Computer-Based Educational Intervention, Mary Annette Hess Wright Jan 2008

Staff Nurses' Level Of Diabetes And Diabetes Management Knowledge After A Diabetes Lecture-Based And Computer-Based Educational Intervention, Mary Annette Hess Wright

All ETDs from UAB

Nurses’ knowledge of diabetes and diabetes management and the identification of differences in knowledge gains after completion of a lecture-based or a computer-based diabetes educational intervention in 175 participants from a variety of health care settings, shifts, and specialties in a large acute-care facility in the Southeastern United States was studied. This was a randomized experimental design with a pretest (Time 1), an immediate post test (Time 2), and a 3-week-post test (Time 3) utilizing the conceptual framework of M. S. Knowles’ adult-learning theory. Nurses’ knowledge was assessed by a 45-item Diabetes Basic Knowledge Test (DBKT) with a 21-item demographic/diabetes …

Developmentally Appropriate Practice And No Child Left Behind: A Phenomenological Study Of Teachers' Experiences, Linda Marie Hogue Jan 2008

Developmentally Appropriate Practice And No Child Left Behind: A Phenomenological Study Of Teachers' Experiences, Linda Marie Hogue

All ETDs from UAB

The authorization of The Elementary and Secondary Act—No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001 provided new federal guidelines for accountability in the United States. As a result, schools are required to provide statistical data through standardized test scores to measure adequate yearly progress benchmarks set by each state. The agenda of the federal government was to force school equity for all children. Since the inception of NCLB, teachers have begun the struggle of meeting the demands of federal, state, and local guidelines that impose harsh penalties if benchmarks are not attained by their students. The National Association for the …

Reading Teachers' Attitudes Toward Scripted Reading Programs: A Multiple Case Study, Holly G. Morgan Jan 2008

Reading Teachers' Attitudes Toward Scripted Reading Programs: A Multiple Case Study, Holly G. Morgan

All ETDs from UAB

In the aftermath of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act (2002), reading teachers have been faced with new challenges and pressures, including reading curricula. Many schools have scrambled to purchase materials that are labeled as being scientifically researched (Vogt & Shearer, 2007). As a result of the influx of scripted reading programs, the educational field has been flooded with primarily quantitative research that was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of a specific program. In addition, much of this research regarding the effectiveness of scripted reading programs has been promoted by the publishing companies themselves. The reading teachers’ attitudes toward …

Exercise Training Improves Premenopausal Women's Ability To Estimate Energy Expenditure After Weight Loss, Micah D. Greer Jan 2008

Exercise Training Improves Premenopausal Women's Ability To Estimate Energy Expenditure After Weight Loss, Micah D. Greer

All ETDs from UAB

Objective: Previously we have shown that total free living energy expenditure (TEE) and greater fitness was associated with reduced long term weight gain and improved ability to estimate TEE from physical activity (PA) questionnaires. In the current study, it is hypothesized that women will overestimate questionnaire self reported energy expenditure (QEE). Furthermore, weight reduced women who exercise train will be better able to estimate TEE compared to weight reduced women who do not exercise train. Design: The participants consisted of 35 European American (EA) and 49 African American (AA) pre-menopausal women. These women were evaluated while overweight and when weight …

Age And Gender Differences In Hip Extension And Flexion Torque Steadiness, Iveta Grunte Jan 2008

Age And Gender Differences In Hip Extension And Flexion Torque Steadiness, Iveta Grunte

All ETDs from UAB

Purpose of this study was to compare age and gender differences in hip extension (HE) and flexion (HF) relative (5, 25, and 50% of maximal voluntary contraction [MVC]) and absolute (25 Nm) torque steadiness measured as standard deviation (SD) and coefficient of variation (CV) of torque fluctuations, and torque accuracy (TA). MVC and steadiness were assessed for 20 young (24.0 + 2.2 yrs) and 11 older (65.4 + 4.5 yrs) men and women. MVC was lower for HF, but HE had greater torque fluctuations. For HE, CV of 5% MVC was greater for older compared to young adults and women …

Children's Prenumerical Quantification Of Time, Kelly A. Russell Jan 2008

Children's Prenumerical Quantification Of Time, Kelly A. Russell

All ETDs from UAB

Time cannot be seen or physically examined, and philosophers have been arguing about the nature of time for thousands of years. National standards and state courses of study require that very young children be able to measure elapsed time to the hour and minute, but are they truly able to do so? This study focuses on children’s ability to quantify time at the very lowest level of quantification. Second, fourth, sixth, and eighth graders are interviewed using two tasks to determine whether they are able to separate their own actions from the actions of the timing device and to judge …

The Role Of Community-Based Programs In Addressing Health Disparities As It Relates To Breast And Cervical Cancer In African American Women: A Systematic Review Of Studies, Rashaan Anderson

All ETDs from UAB

In an effort to extrapolate the detail intricacies of how community-based programs impact public health a systematic review of the literature was performed. This research will examine ways in which community based programs reduce health disparities in breast and cervical cancer in African American women. The primary mechanism used to identify appropriate citations for systematic review and inclusion was performed using the PubMed, CINAHL, MEDLINE, EMBASE, CancerLit and PsychINFO online databases. Key-word searches to be included for were the terms community, community based participatory research, community-based organizations, community coalitions, non for profit organizations, action plan, action research, grassroots organizations, community …
