This report provides details of the experiences of the 1995 Year 9 cohort of the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY). Information on this cohort was first collected in 1995, when these young people were Year 9 students in Australian schools. The reference period for this report is 2005, when the modal age of respondents was 24 years. Information about the 1995 Year 9 LSAY cohort’s activities in previous years is available in earlier reports in this series.

Student affairs is a large, complex area of campus operations and is comprised of many departments with professionals from a wide variety of educational backgrounds. Long provides a short history of the student affairs profession, followed by an overview of the departments in a typical student affairs division and the responsibilities and goals of the professionals in those departments. Long also describes the values that guide the work of student affairs professionals and the contemporary challenges they face.

Institutions of higher education in the United States are remarkably diverse in their educational purposes, their organizational structure, and their architectural styles. But underlying all this diversity are two distinct historical models: the decentralized British “collegiate” model of university education, and the centralized Germanic university model. Early American higher education grew out of the British collegiate tradition and emphasized the comprehensive development of students’ intellect and character, while the Germanic university tradition, introduced in the late 1800s, shifted the focus to technical scholarship and research. Students living in smoke-free and alcohol free residential housing were compared to students in on-campus environments that did not ban these substances. Significant differences between these communities are discussed.
