House Prices In The Measurement Of Inflation: An Application Using Irish Data, Róisín O'Sullivan

This paper illustrates the impact on Irish inflation of including a house-price series with the current components of the harmonised index of consumer prices (HICP). We construct a dynamic factor index of inflation that weights the individual price series according to the strength of their signal about the common trend in prices. As the relatively noisy house-price series attracts a weight of only 3 per cent in the index, the inclusion of house prices in this way does not hugely alter the recent pattern of inflation for Ireland, despite house prices exhibiting much stronger growth on average than the current …

Over the previous decade, Ireland's economic boom has attracted asylum seekers from around the globe to this small island nation. Ireland's economic explosion created growing pains for industrial sectors of the Irish economy. Ireland’s continued willingness to diversify its neighborhoods will promote even greater economic prosperity. Furthermore, refugees will satisfy several of the economic demands of Ireland’s massively growing economy. Asylum seekers granted refugee status in Ireland will satisfy present labor shortages in Ireland. Also, these refugees will allow Ireland to establish an economic partnership with non-EU countries that have a propensity to export asylum seekers.

Thwarted Ambition: The Role Of Public Policy In University Development, Michael N. Bastedo

New England Journal of Public Policy

Paradoxically, Massachusetts is the home of a world-class system of private higher education and a struggling system of public higher education. The influence of private higher education and persistent indifference by state government repeatedly thwarted UMass’s ambition to increase its stature on the national scene. The result was a “boom or bust” cycle of financial support that made rational planning and institutional expansion extremely difficult, exacerbating the university’s late start toward world-class status.
