Central Bank Of Nigeria Annual Report And Statement Of Accounts For The Year Ended 31st December 1964, Central Bank Of Nigeria

CBN Annual Report

CBN annual report and statement of accounts for 1964 covers economic performance including key economic indicators such as inflation rate, GDP growth, exchange rate stability, banking sector performance, monetary policy, financial stability, fiscal policy, and regulatory updates for 1964. Export earnings of the developing countries rose during 1964, reflecting a continuing upswing in economic activity in the industrial countries. The rate of increase, however, was somewhat slower than in 1963. The share of the developing countries in total world exports in 1964, however, amounted to 22.1 per cent as compared with 22.9 per cent in 1963. World exports rose substantially …

Optimum Economic Growth In An Aggregative Model Of Capital Accumulation: A Turnpike Theorem, David Cass Nov 1964

Optimum Economic Growth In An Aggregative Model Of Capital Accumulation: A Turnpike Theorem, David Cass

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Recent contributions to the theory of optimum economic growth, for example, in [1], [3], [8] or [10], like Ramsey’s seminal article [6], have been primarily concerned with the implications of maximizing the social welfare generated by the entire stream of future consumption. As an alternative formulation, in this paper it is postulated that only the social welfare associated with future consumption over some finite period is of direct concern; generations beyond the horizon are accounted for only insofar as a lower bound on the terminal capital stock is prescribed. Then, within a closed, aggregative framework, the behavior of growth paths …

A Parametric Simplicial Formulation Of Houthakker's Capacity Method, C. Van De Panne, Andrew B. Whinston Nov 1964

A Parametric Simplicial Formulation Of Houthakker's Capacity Method, C. Van De Panne, Andrew B. Whinston

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

The paper reformulates Houthakker’s capacity method for quadratic programming in the framework of the Simplex and dual methods for quadratic programming, thereby greatly reducing the conceptual and computational complexities of the method. It is shown that the method is applicable for all convex quadratic programming problems, including the case of a semi-definite matrix of the quadratic form and that of constraints in equality form. The method reduces in the linear programming case to a parametric version of the dual method.

Stock Market Indices: A Principal Components Analysis, George J. Feeney, Donald D. Hester Oct 1964

Stock Market Indices: A Principal Components Analysis, George J. Feeney, Donald D. Hester

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper investigates a widely quoted stock market index, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (hereafter DJI), and constructs some alternative indices. Their performances are compared to the DJI. The question of applying the indices to problems of portfolio selection is explored when investors’ utility functions are quadratic in the rate of return. By constructing indices from data collected in different time periods, some conclusions are drawn about the constancy of price and rate of return covariance and correlation matrices of the 30 Dow Jones Industrial stocks over time.

Models Of Technical Progress And The Golden Rule Of Research, Edmond S. Phelps Oct 1964

Models Of Technical Progress And The Golden Rule Of Research, Edmond S. Phelps

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

The primary purpose of this paper is to present a model of technical progress and economic growth from which one can derive a Golden Rule of Research quite analogous to the Golden Rule of Accumulation. The secondary purpose is to discuss various models of technical progress. That there might exist a Golden Rule for research is not surprising since research is a kind of investment – investment in technology – just as “accumulation” denotes investment in tangible capital. Nevertheless “capital” and “technology” differ in important aspects. If, given the technology, the production of commodities is homogeneous of degree one in …

An Experimental Study In Oligopoly, James W. Friedman Sep 1964

An Experimental Study In Oligopoly, James W. Friedman

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

A very general model with which many theories of oligopolistic behavior might be tested would be a useful tool for economists. In the first part of this paper a model is proposed for this role. The model is not developed in the fullest degree of generality, but is presented in the way most relevant to experiments of the type presented in the second part of the paper. The experiments employ a simple market model in which each subject takes the role of a business firm, each firm has only one decision variable under its control (its own price) and the …

Application Of Location Theory And Empirical Data By Area Industrial Development Groups, Clarence Arthur Middleton Jr. Jun 1964

Application Of Location Theory And Empirical Data By Area Industrial Development Groups, Clarence Arthur Middleton Jr.

Master's Theses

The objective of this paper is to determine if theories of industrial location and empirical data describing changes in manufacturing employment might suggest efficient approaches in attracting industry to a particular area. This is in sharp contrast to the usual application of location theory in which the optimum location of a firm or of a particular industry is selected.

An Analysis Of Prices At Utah Livestock Auctions, Mcneil Glenn May 1964

An Analysis Of Prices At Utah Livestock Auctions, Mcneil Glenn

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

From the time of Don Hernando Cortez, livestock has been one of America's greatest industries. The cattle in Cortez's time were Moorish stock which had been bred for centuries in the Andalusian Plains of Spain.

Following this beginning in about 1521, cattle were bred and brought from South America to Mexico. By 1583 the first herds were grazing in what is now Texas.

This was the beginning of the livestock industry and with it carne the endless search for fertile valleys, waterholes, feed in the winter, long trail drives, cattle rustlers, railroads, range wars, and a great American institution, The …

International Cooperation In The Economic Development Of Latin America, Antonella Picchio May 1964

International Cooperation In The Economic Development Of Latin America, Antonella Picchio

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

As an Italian, with less than a year in the Western Hemisphere, I now find myself with a “mixed” personality. As someone else expressed it, "I am physically Italian, Latin American by adoption, and gaily American." This may well be a good combination for writing a thesis on Latin America. My "Latin blood" may help me in understanding the mentality of the people of Latin America, while my studies in Italy--a country with a long experience as an underdeveloped country--may contribute toward a personal understanding of the problems of poverty, social injustice, and political instability. Three months of experience in …

The Role Of Cooperative Societies In The Economic Development Of India, A. M. Rananavare May 1964

The Role Of Cooperative Societies In The Economic Development Of India, A. M. Rananavare

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The idea of cooperation is not new to man. It is as old as man himself. Cooperatives are an almost universal form of organization today found in practically all countries and used by people in many ways. The cooperatives are formed to secure low cost credit, to purchase supplies and equipment for farming and household needs, to market products, even to secure many services, like electric power, irrigation, health, and insurance. Cooperatives can be used in many ways to benefit people in the everyday needs of life.

The meaning of cooperation is that isolated and powerless individuals can, by combining …

The Role Of The Federal Government In The Industrial Expansion Of Utah During World War Two, Anthony Thomas Cluff May 1964

The Role Of The Federal Government In The Industrial Expansion Of Utah During World War Two, Anthony Thomas Cluff

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

For ten years the American economy had been depressed. Unemployment haunted economic planners, low production plagued manufacturers, low incomes impoverished wage earners, and everyone hoped for the dawn of new prosperity. It was as if recovery had waited for an untrodden decade to arrive before heralding the new day. The New Deal brought Social Security for old age, insurance for bank deposits, new guarantees for labor, and a score of public work projects, but it did not bring economic recovery.

Some Effects Of Modern Weapons Systems Development On The American Economy, Maurice Braginsky May 1964

Some Effects Of Modern Weapons Systems Development On The American Economy, Maurice Braginsky

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Cold War goes on! And the use of military strength by the United States as a backdrop to other forms of persuation--political, ideological, diplomatic, and economic--continues. The use of a military backdrop as an instrument of national policy will probably continue indefinitely because it is unlikely that the Soviet Union or Communist China will change their objectives of expansionism; it is too much an integral part of their ideology. The easing of tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union since the Cuban crisis in 1962 is perhaps an indication of a change in tactics and diplomacy, but …

A Study Of Thailand's Balance Of Trade 1953-1962, Suchin Worawongwasu May 1964

A Study Of Thailand's Balance Of Trade 1953-1962, Suchin Worawongwasu

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

International trade theory suggests that trade can be advantageous to the industrial as well as to the underdeveloped countries. For the latter, specialization and exchange brings about an increase in total productions.

Thailand, an underdeveloped country, has for the past decade experienced an unfavorable balance of trade. A primary producing country, Thailand principally exports rice, rubber, tin, and teak. Her principal imports are manufactured goods, machinery and transport equipment, mineral fuels, lubricants and chemicals.

The thesis is intended to investigate the causes of this adverse balance of trade. Thailand's four principal exports accounted for an average of 74.7 percent of …

Current Proposals For Changes In Reserve Requirements Of Commercial Banks In The United States, William Byrd Harrison Apr 1964

Current Proposals For Changes In Reserve Requirements Of Commercial Banks In The United States, William Byrd Harrison

Master's Theses

The well-being of a nation is dependent in large part upon the state of its money. Bank reserve positions have a great deal to do with the state of our money. An impressive volume of study and evidence has been brought forth in just the past few years to indicate that United States laws which establish the rules under which financial institutions operate need revising. Other, more readily understood topics, however, however claimed the attention of the public and its representatives in Congress. Little has been done to remedy serious shortcomings in banking laws.

This paper examines briefly these studies …
