The Value Of Farmland: Mapping Assessor Data To Understand Land Use Change, Lyndi Perry May 2019

The Value Of Farmland: Mapping Assessor Data To Understand Land Use Change, Lyndi Perry

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Ideas developed by regional economists have potential applications within the urban planning field. One potential application is toward conserving farmland, and within this thesis this topic is examined for the study area of Utah County, Utah. Using assessor data, a land value map is created and further used to develop a regional economic model and spatial models that were analyzed for patterns of land use change.

Findings show that representing land value as continuous surface maps is a useful approach. The maps reveal that Utah County has densified as its population increased while farmland loss still occurred in agriculturally-important areas. …

A Dynamic Optimization Model Of Energy Related Economic Planning And Development For The Navajo Nation, Hamid Beladi May 1983

A Dynamic Optimization Model Of Energy Related Economic Planning And Development For The Navajo Nation, Hamid Beladi

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Navajo reservation located in portions of Arizona, New Mexico and Utah is rich in low sulfur coal deposits, ideal for strip mining operation. Presently, the Navajo Nation has entered into extensive coal leases with several large companies and utilities. Contracts have committed huge quantities of Navajo coal for mining.

The present research has been directed to evaluate the shadow prices of Navajo coal and identify optimal coal extraction. An economic model of coal resource extraction over time has been structured within an optimal control problem has been formulated as a discrete dynamic optimization problem.

A comparison of the shadow …

An Economic Appraisal Of Reuse Concepts In Regional Water Supply Planning, Rangesan Narayanan May 1976

An Economic Appraisal Of Reuse Concepts In Regional Water Supply Planning, Rangesan Narayanan

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Using a conceptual model of a water supply firm, the necessary conditions for production and market efficiency are derived when renovated wastewater is considered as a potential water resource. The nature and extent of the supply augmentation due to recycled reuse is demonstrated using classical optimization techniques. Three stages of short-run supply corresponding to no recycling, partial recycled reuse and complete recycling of all reclaimable water are identified through appropriate Lagrangian Multipliers as well as graphical techniques.

A mathematical programming model is structured to determine the optimal water resource allocation and pricing policy for Salt Lake County. By maximizing the …
