[Excerpt] Micro-Small-Medium Enterprises (abbreviated herein henceforth as “SMEs”) are global drivers of technological innovation and economic development. Using Video Clips To Teach Creative Destruction, Arthur M. Diamond Jr.

Stories are memorable and convincing. One way to efficiently tell stories is through movie and video clips. I summarize several video clips that may be useful in teaching aspects of Schumpeter’s important theory of creative destruction. Among the clips discussed are: Hugh Laurie’s Protest Song, electric light segment from a documentary on the 1898 Trans-Mississippi Exposition, eBay Toy Boat Ad, Miss Princess Fun Brick Ad, Moscow toilet paper queue scene, the New York coffee aisle scene from Moscow on the Hudson, and Peck and DeVito’s speeches from Other People’s Money.

A novel effort to reinvent the innovation ecology of the Charlotte region is described. The methods and approaches are particularly relevant for restarting both local and global economies. Addressing requirements for faster innovation and more diverse innovation cycles, the research enterprise of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, the Charlotte Research Institute, the University Research Park, and a diverse collection of partners are working together to recast university research models and research park paradigms. This paper examines then notion that more stringent climate change policy will induce innovation in environmentally friendly technologies. While past work has been concerned that such policies may stimulate such innovation at the expense of innovation elsewhere in the economy, the model presented here challenges the presumption that environmentally friendly innovation will be increased. It is demonstrated that a tighter emissions cap will reduce the scale of fossil fuel usage and that this effect will diminish incentives to improve fossil fuel efficiencies. Recenti statistiche evidenziano che il problema della bassa crescita ed efficienza dell’Italia risiede principalmente nella dinamica della produttività totale dei fattori (total factor productivity, o TFP), in netto peggioramento proprio nel settore manifatturiero. Inoltre, tra le spiegazioni del supposto declino economico ed industriale dell’Italia, quelle che si concentrano sulle variabili tecnologico-organizzative sembrano tornare in primo piano, anche alla luce del dibattito sulla “strategia di Lisbona”.
