Election Cycles And The Allocation Of Foreign Aid, Darren Michael James Larue
Election Cycles And The Allocation Of Foreign Aid, Darren Michael James Larue
Major Papers
In this study, I explore the political budget cycle effect on foreign aid spending on the extensive and intensive margins. I find evidence to support the statement that foreign aid is not neutral to the existence of elections but is in fact manipulated by the incumbent government one year before an election. This study is an improvement from the recent literature in two distinct ways. First, I explore the overall election cycle effect for the different sub-categories of official development assistance (ODA): debt relief, infrastructure, humanitarian aid, multi-sector aid, production aid, program aid, and social infrastructure aid. Second, I …
The Economic Impact Of The University Of Windsor On The Tri-County Region Through Education, Christian James George
The Economic Impact Of The University Of Windsor On The Tri-County Region Through Education, Christian James George
Major Papers
We improve upon the groundwork that began with “The Economic Impact of the
University of Windsor on the Tri-County Region” by Tselmuun Tserenkhuu (2017). We
quantify the economic impact of education, measured by the aggregate income differential
of graduates of the University of Windsor who have stayed within the tri-county region and
found employment and those who graduate from the local college. Using data provided by
the University of Windsor, Leddy Library and tri-county census data, we estimate (1)
number of graduates the university has produced each year, (2) fraction of graduates who
remain in the tri-county region, (3) fraction …

Essays On Parental Leave And Family Labour Supply, Youjin Choi
Essays On Parental Leave And Family Labour Supply, Youjin Choi
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This thesis studies married couples' decisions regarding labour supply, fertility, and take-up of parental leave. Importantly, it emphasizes household interactions in a family labour supply framework where husbands and wives jointly make decisions.
In Chapter 2, I describe how differences in married individuals' time allocations between Canada and the U.S. may be related to different parental leave policies in the two countries. First, I document background information on parental leave policies and take-up behaviour in the two countries. Second, I analyze married individuals' time allocations using data from the General Social Survey (GSS) for Canada and American Time Use Survey …
Essays On Crime, Education, And Employment, Maria Antonella Mancino
Essays On Crime, Education, And Employment, Maria Antonella Mancino
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
My thesis consists of three chapters that are motivated by policy-relevance and contribute to the study of crime choices among young individuals.
Chapter 2 studies the determinants of youth crime using a dynamic discrete choice model of crime and education. We allow past education and criminal activities to affect current crime and educational decisions. We take advantage of a rich panel dataset on serious juvenile offenders, the Pathways to Desistance. Using a series of psychometric tests, we estimate a model of cognitive and social/emotional skills which feed into the crime and education model. This allows us to separately identify the …
Synthetic Control And Dynamic Panel Estimation: A Case Study Of Iran, Orkideh Gharehgozli
Synthetic Control And Dynamic Panel Estimation: A Case Study Of Iran, Orkideh Gharehgozli
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
International sanctions imposed on Iran, targeting primarily Iran’s key energy sector and its ability to access the international financial system, have harmed Iran’s economic growth, specifically from 2011 to 2014. This thesis uses this case to study and compare the applicability of two different popular approaches used in comparative case studies exploring the effect of a policy intervention.
In the Chapter 1 we study the synthetic control method. Using this method, we estimate the effect of the intensification of sanctions on Iran’s GDP during the period 2011 to 2014. The year of 2011 was Iran’s first full year under these …
Time-Series And Cross-Section Variation Of Bond Risk Premia, Niloofar Sahebalzamany
Time-Series And Cross-Section Variation Of Bond Risk Premia, Niloofar Sahebalzamany
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
A long-term bond that is sold before its maturity has an uncertain excess return over the certain return from a shorter-term risk-free bond maturing at the time of sale. There is strong evidence that this excess return is predictable and that the predicted excess return, or risk premium, is time varying. Cochrane and Piazzesi (2005) use five forward rates to predict excess returns on one to five-year maturity bonds. I extend and improve their approach in multiple aspects. Firstly, the data set for the US market is expanded in two dimensions: cross-section and time series. In the cross-section dimension, one- …
Essays On The Economics Of Unhealthy Behaviors, Raul Segura-Escano
Essays On The Economics Of Unhealthy Behaviors, Raul Segura-Escano
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation aims to explore a variety of responses in the form of unhealthy behaviors as a consequence of different sudden events perceived by individuals. The first one is the doubtlessly pure exogenous shock caused by an unexpected terrorist attack, Boston Marathon Bombings. The second one is the turmoil caused by the Great Recession of 2008, which is the most serious economic downturn since the Great Depression during the 1930’s. This dissertation consists of the following two chapters:
Chapter 1: “The Impact of Terrorism on Mental Health and Substance Use: Evidence from the Boston Marathon Bombings” On April 15, 2013, …
Corporate Urbanization: Between The Future And Survival In Lebanon, Deen S. Sharp
Corporate Urbanization: Between The Future And Survival In Lebanon, Deen S. Sharp
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
If you look today at the skyline of downtowns throughout the Middle East and beyond, the joint-stock corporation has transformed the urban landscape. The corporation makes itself present through the proliferation of its urban mega-projects, including skyscrapers, downtown developments and gated communities; retail malls and artificial islands; airports and ports; and highways. Built into these corporate urban structures are edifices of politics, ideology and certain forms of socio-spatial and temporal organization. The corporation, however, has largely escaped critical scholarly analysis in Geography and/or Urban and Middle East Studies. In this thesis, I argue that the corporation is far more than …
Essays On The Market Structure Of The U.S. Health Care System, Ayse S. Diebel
Essays On The Market Structure Of The U.S. Health Care System, Ayse S. Diebel
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation examines the welfare implications of vertical restraints in the U.S. health care market. I focus on two phenomena that influence vertical relationships between hospitals and insurers: vertical integration and vertical bundling. Both of these practices have potential efficiency-inducing and anti-competitive effects from a theoretical standpoint, making welfare implications ambiguous. I analyze their impact on welfare in an empirical setting. This task requires structurally modeling the market by using data on hospitals, insurers, and consumers, and simulating counterfactual worlds free of vertical restraints.
I construct my dataset by combining data from multiple sources. Hospital characteristics come from the American …
From Prison To Homeless Shelter: Camp Laguardia And The Political Economy Of An Urban Infrastructure, Christian D. Siener
From Prison To Homeless Shelter: Camp Laguardia And The Political Economy Of An Urban Infrastructure, Christian D. Siener
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
At this time of increasing housing insecurity, recent reforms in homeless shelter policy have attracted the attention of scholars and activists. This research sheds light on these changes by placing them in historical and political-geographic perspective, focusing on the role of homeless shelters in stabilizing social displacement by destabilizing solidarity. It demonstrates historical continuity between prisons and homeless shelters in New York City through a case study of conditions surrounding the transition of Camp LaGuardia, a prison that slowly transformed into the city’s largest, and longest lasting, homeless shelter. The case study is an empirical demonstration of some of the …
Making It Pay To Be A Fan: The Political Economy Of Digital Sports Fandom And The Sports Media Industry, Andrew Mckinney
Making It Pay To Be A Fan: The Political Economy Of Digital Sports Fandom And The Sports Media Industry, Andrew Mckinney
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation is a series of case studies and sociological examinations of the role that the sports media industry and mediated sport fandom plays in the political economy of the Internet. The Internet has structurally changed the way that sport fans access sport and accelerated the processes through which the capitalist actors in the sports media industry have been able to subsume them. The three case studies examined in this dissertation are examples of how digital media technologies have both helped fans become more active producers and consumers of sports and made the sports media industry an integral and vanguard …
Essays In New Keynesian Monetary Policy, Tzu-Hao Huang
Essays In New Keynesian Monetary Policy, Tzu-Hao Huang
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The dissertation consists of three Chapters. I consider New Keynesian models which involve tradeoffs between output gap and inflation variances. Such policy strategy is often referred to as flexible inflation targeting rules (e.g., Lars Svensson 2011, pp.1238-95). Taylor rules, in general, have the symbolic expression 𝑖t=𝜑x𝑥t+𝜑𝜋𝜋t+𝜑g𝑔t, where 𝑖t is the nominal interest rate at period t, 𝑥t is the target variable output gap at period t, 𝜋t is the target variable inflation rate at period t, 𝑔t is realized shock …
The Impact Of Cleft Lip And Palate Repair Surgery On Cognitive And Academic Outcomes For Teens In India, R Jeremiah Maller
The Impact Of Cleft Lip And Palate Repair Surgery On Cognitive And Academic Outcomes For Teens In India, R Jeremiah Maller
Master's Theses
India has a backlog of nearly one million patients in need of cleft lip and palate repair. Unrepaired cleft results in social stigma and diminished health, psychological wellbeing, and academic functioning. Cleft repair surgery has the potential to restore functioning in these domains. However, the magnitude of the social, educational, and economic impact of cleft repair surgery has not been evaluated using statistically rigorous methods. An estimation of the academic and educational impact of cleft repair has implications for the appropriate allocation of public health resources. We analyze original data gathered from teenagers in West Bengal, India using the difference-in-differences …
Essays In International Economics: The Trade-Creation Effect Of Migration, Miguel Cardoso
Essays In International Economics: The Trade-Creation Effect Of Migration, Miguel Cardoso
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
My thesis consists of three chapters relating to topics in International Economics. My first two chapters study the effects of migration flows on the economic outcomes of stayers for both receiving and sending countries. In both these chapters I develop and calibrate two distinct general equilibrium (GE) models to study the quantitative effect of migration on the real income of workers. The third chapter empirically investigates the relationship between firm export behaviour and their composition of foreign-born workers.
In my first chapter I develop a multi-country GE model where consumers choose where to reside, facing a trade-off between potentially earning …

Non-Linear Time Series Modelling With Applications To Equity And Fixed Income Markets, Galyna Grynkiv
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
My thesis focuses on theoretical and empirical aspects of modelling time series during different financial and economic conditions. It consists of three separate chapters in which the properties of Threshold Vector Autoregressive Model (TVAR) models are addressed with subsequent applications to equity and fixed income markets. In the first chapter, which is a joint work with my supervisor Lars Stentoft, we examine the steady state properties of the TVAR model. Assuming the trigger variable is exogenous and the regime process follows a Bernoulli distribution, we derive the necessary and sufficient conditions for existence of a stationary distribution. The derived stationarity …
Health And Healthcare In Nepal: An Analysis Of The Private And Public Sector, Sujita Pandey
Health And Healthcare In Nepal: An Analysis Of The Private And Public Sector, Sujita Pandey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Through private and public efforts, there has been considerable improvement in the health and healthcare sector in Nepal. However, the healthcare system in Nepal faces challenges such as limited access and lack of quality healthcare. Although there have been recent efforts to introduce universal healthcare coverage, there is limited evidence on existing systems to properly formulate a policy. To provide a wholistic review of the Nepali health system, we assess both public and private sectors. In 2005, Nepal introduced a financial incentive, called the Safe Delivery Incentive Program, to increase the use of maternity care with the goal of reducing …
Off-Farm Labor Supply And Health Impact Of Pesticide Use: An Economic Analysis, Nguyen Vuong
Off-Farm Labor Supply And Health Impact Of Pesticide Use: An Economic Analysis, Nguyen Vuong
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
By employing data from Vietnam Household Living Standard Surveys (VHLSS) and weather data from different sources, this thesis aims to fill the gaps in the literature on off-farm labor supply, health effect of pesticide use and the economic returns to communist party membership in Vietnam.
This thesis consists of four chapters. The first chapter provides a brief introduction. The second chapter considers the effect of weather on the risk perception of farmers in Vietnam by examining labor allocation decision and its effect on household income. I started by building a theoretical framework with the assumption that off-farm wage per hour …
Past, Present And Future Of Maine's Pulp And Paper Industry, Ariel Listo
Past, Present And Future Of Maine's Pulp And Paper Industry, Ariel Listo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The pulp and paper industry has historically been of paramount importance for the state of Maine, both from cultural and economic perspectives. The industry has been a vital part of the forest products economy and a large contributor to employment and state gross domestic product (GDP). However, the number of pulp and paper mills in Maine has declined sharply in the last few decades, deeply harming employment levels, local economies and the forest products sector of the most heavily forested state in the nation. This phenomenon has sparked efforts to understand the factors behind the downfall of Maine's pulp and …
Essays On Market Competition And Law Enforcement, Yanchen Wang
Essays On Market Competition And Law Enforcement, Yanchen Wang
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
My Ph.D. dissertation contains both theoretical and empirical studies on market competition and law enforcement. The first study, entitled “Piracy, Counterfeiting, and Market Competition”, is a theoretical study and investigates the economic consequences of intellectual property law enforcement by looking at two types of intellectual property infringement, piracy and counterfeiting. To investigate how the market power changes in the presence of piracy, we start with a static model made up of two horizontally and vertically differentiated goods, genuine product and pirated product. The representative consumer's utility is a function of the consumption of the two goods. The consumer can choose …
