On The Long Duration Of Till Sheet Construction : A Reassessment Of How Quaternary Grounding Line Translations Relate To Near-Surface Seismic-Stratigraphy Of Eastern Ross Sea, Antarctica, Sydney Grace Bowles

LSU Master's Theses

Previously acquired seismic surveys provide strong evidence that the post-Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) retreat of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) deposited a back-stepping succession of seismically-resolved grounding zone wedges (GZWs) in eastern Ross Sea. However, the chronology of WAIS retreat is debated. The conventional view is that three GZWs (Red, Brown, and Gray Units) were deposited since the LGM. An alternative view, based on recent radiocarbon dates, is that the youngest GZW (the Gray Unit) was deposited during the LGM. If correct, then the older GZWs (Red and Brown Units) were deposited prior to LGM. A recent study (Bart …

Evaluation Of The Depositional Environment Of The Eagle Ford Formation Using Well Log, Seismic, And Core Data In The Hawkville Trough, Lasalle And Mcmullen Counties, South Texas, Zachary Paul Hendershott Jan 2012

Evaluation Of The Depositional Environment Of The Eagle Ford Formation Using Well Log, Seismic, And Core Data In The Hawkville Trough, Lasalle And Mcmullen Counties, South Texas, Zachary Paul Hendershott

LSU Master's Theses

The Upper Cretaceous Eagle Ford Formation of South Texas records a mixed siliciclastic/carbonate depositional environment across the Late Cretaceous Platform of the Gulf of Mexico. During the Late Cretaceous, LaSalle and McMullen Counties was part of the Hawkville Trough, a wedged shaped region between the Edwards and Sligo carbonate reefs. Well logs from 21 wells and seismic data were used to construct structure and isopach maps of the Eagle Ford Formation throughout the Hawkville Trough. Only the unconformable bottom (Buda-Eagle Ford) and top (Eagle Ford-Austin Chalk) boundaries plus the conformable boundary between the upper and lower Eagle Ford can be …

Magnetostratigraphy Susceptibility Correlations For The Guadalupian-Lopingian Boundary And The Placement Of The North American Ochoan Series: Texas (Usa) And South China, Matthew Allan Clark Jan 2012

Magnetostratigraphy Susceptibility Correlations For The Guadalupian-Lopingian Boundary And The Placement Of The North American Ochoan Series: Texas (Usa) And South China, Matthew Allan Clark

LSU Master's Theses

Stratigraphic studies have emphasized the use of multiple, geochemical and geochemical proxies to investigate critical geologic boundaries, events and their correlation throughout the entire Phanerozoic. In this study, an emerging geophysical proxy, mass-specific, low-field magnetic susceptibility (χ) is used to investigate the global correlation of the Guadalupian-Lopingian (G-L) boundary, to better resolve and supplement biostratigraphic correlations, including inferred G-L boundary sections defining the base of the North American Ochoan Series. The North American Ochoan Series of West Texas, defined lithostratigraphically by the contact between the Bell Canyon and Castile Formations, represents a unique and well-studied sequence in the Delaware Basin, …

A Palynological And Sequence Stratigraphic Study Of Santonian - Maastrichtan Strata From The Upper Magdalena Basin, Sandra Garzon Jan 2011

A Palynological And Sequence Stratigraphic Study Of Santonian - Maastrichtan Strata From The Upper Magdalena Basin, Sandra Garzon

LSU Master's Theses

This manuscript presents a biostratigraphic and sequence stratigraphic interpretation of palynological data from two outcrop sections on the NE flank of the Upper Magdalena Valley (UMV) basin comprising the Santonian to Lower Maastrichtian interval. The objectives of this study where: a) to characterize the lithologically similar Lower Lidita, Upper Lidita, and El Cobre, Buscavidas formations and b) to provide a better understanding of important correlation horizons in the northeastern part of the UMV basin and to confirm the age assignment of stratal units. A cyclic pattern of palynomorph distribution was recognized in both sections and tied to the different stages …

A Petrophysical Evaluation Of Factors That Control Cap Rock Seal Quality, Andrew Tyler Harrison Jan 2010

A Petrophysical Evaluation Of Factors That Control Cap Rock Seal Quality, Andrew Tyler Harrison

LSU Master's Theses

Textural and mineralogical variations within 33 shale samples were analyzed to provide a model for predication of hydrocarbon top-seal efficiency. Variation in mineral abundances in the subsurface influences petrophysical properties and other characteristics of hydrocarbon sealing sequences and reservoirs. In geophysical well logs, various proxies, such as gamma ray emission and neutron absorption, are used to assess changes in mineral composition. This study directly compares X-ray diffraction measurements of mineral percentages and geophysical responses from Middle Miocene cored intervals in the Santa Cruz Well; Mississippi Canyon block 519, Gulf of Mexico with those derived from well logging. Distinct textural differences …
