There are currently more than 36 million people living with HIV/AIDS globally, and in 1999 5.3 million individuals were newly infected with the virus. AIDS activities initiated by nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) have been highly influential on thinking and strategies found within the HIV/AIDS sector. Yet NGOs often experience particular difficulties in increasing the scale of their activities to reach larger numbers of people, to have an impact at levels higher than the community, and to address the broader social determinants of HIV/AIDS.
