Geranylgeraniol (Ggoh), Incorporated Into A Bone Cement Pellet Promotes Osteoclast Function And Healing In A Model Of Medication-Related Osteonecrosis Of The Jaw, George J Feldman, David Young, Theresa Freeman, Lauren Israel, Daniel Taub, Robert Diecidue

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Faculty Papers

INTRODUCTION: There is no cause -based treatment for Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (MRONJ). MRONJ is a morbid condition including exposed, infected bone and mandibular fractures in osteoporotic individuals and metastatic cancers patients treated with nitrogen containing bisphosphonates (NBP). NBPs inhibit farnesyl diphosphate synthase (FDPS) in the mevalonate pathway, depriving osteoclasts and other bone cells of small GTPases necessary for their function and survival. We test the hypothesis that geranylgeraniol (GGOH),a metabolite downstream of FDPS, when incorporated into a bone cement pellet, enhances osteoclast function and promotes local bone healing in

METHODS:

RESULTS: The release of GGOH from bone cement …

Negative Pressure Wound Therapy For Complex Oral Wounds, Mykaihla Sternick, James Gates, Allen Champion, Andrew Yampolsky Dec 2023

Negative Pressure Wound Therapy For Complex Oral Wounds, Mykaihla Sternick, James Gates, Allen Champion, Andrew Yampolsky

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Faculty Papers

Negative pressure wound therapy provides a nonsurgical treatment option for many types of complex wounds. This therapy utilizes the vacuum-assisted closure device, which decreases air pressure, removes fluid that accumulates within the wound, and aids to facilitate changes that promote healing. Despite the increased use of negative pressure wound therapy in the head and neck region, there is substantially less data available on the management of transoral vacuum-assisted wound closure. Herein, we present a case of a novel approach for the creation and use of a transoral wound vac for a patient with a refractory orocutaneous wound in the setting …

Utility Of Point Of Care Ultrasound For Identifying Dental Abscesses In Emergency Department Patients Presenting With Dental Pain, Matthew Cervantes, Kelly Goodsell, Md, Arthur Au, Md Jan 2020

Utility Of Point Of Care Ultrasound For Identifying Dental Abscesses In Emergency Department Patients Presenting With Dental Pain, Matthew Cervantes, Kelly Goodsell, Md, Arthur Au, Md

Phase 1

Introduction: Computed tomography (CT) is the current gold standard for diagnosing dental abscesses in the Emergency Department (ED). There are limitations to using CT, including high cost, radiation exposure, and lengthy time to diagnosis. Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) is an alternative imaging modality that does not have these limitations, and is already used to diagnose other soft tissue abscesses. The efficacy of POCUS for diagnosing suspected dental abscesses has never been investigated. The purpose of this project is to compare the utility of POCUS to CT in diagnosing suspected dental abscesses in the ED.

Methods: A convenience …

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

Background While the need for interprofessional education (IPE) has been clearly elucidated, (Interprofessional Education Collaborative, 2016), one of the major barriers is the logistical challenge of meeting curricular requirements for all involved. The organization and time required in an already full schedule are often deterrents. Ideal opportunities meet specific program curricular requirements as well as enhancing interprofessional competencies. Interprofessional competencies include developing skills to teach other health care providers about profession-specific skills and enhancing communication across the professions (Bridges, 2011; Interprofessional Education Collaborative, 2016). Active learning techniques have been advocated for adult learners to promote motivation and engagement (Knowles, 1984), …

JCIPE Conference

Primary Objective:

To compare interprofessional (IP) care versus standard care on medication history clarifications in dental patients.

Secondary Objectives:

To assess the clinical significance of these clarifications with regards to the potential impact on dental treatment plans.

To describe the interventions provided by IP care to clarify discrepancies and/or resolve medication-related problems.

Theodorou, Pharmd, Bcps, Melissa E. Rotz, Pharmd, Bcps, Shannon Myers Virtue, Psyd, Elizabeth Waldron, Ba

JCIPE Conference

Objectives:

• To compare the difference between IPE care and standard care (SC) groups regarding dental patients' perceptions of knowledge gained about tobacco cessation, intentions to quit tobacco use, and quit attempts at follow-up.

• To evaluate perceptions of IPE care.

Background:

Based on the link between tobacco use and oral health and the frequent contact between dental providers and patients, the dental clinic is an ideal setting to address tobacco use.1

• Many dentists feel unprepared providing tobacco cessation education, particularly pharmacologic treatment options.1-3

• Pharmacists promote safe and effective pharmacologic treatment options for tobacco dependence and patients’ perceptions …

JCIPE Conference

Purpose: To describe the design and evaluation of an innovative interprofessional practice experience involving pharmacy and dental students.

Background: Accreditation standards for pharmacy and dentistry schools mandate that interprofessional education (IPE) is introduced and practiced throughout the curriculum. There is a paucity of data involving interprofessional practice experiences with dental and pharmacy students.

Description of Program: Pharmacy and dental student-teams conduct health and medication histories for patients seen at Temple University’s dental admissions clinic. Additionally, these teams collaborate to conduct tobacco cessation counseling for current tobacco users. This interprofessional practice experience was designed to prepare students to build more effective …
