Steven R Rogg
In 2000 IMSA and the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s Project 2061 established a partnership, IMSA 2061, to offer unique and nationally recognized professional development programs for mathematics and science teachers and education leaders. Participants in the IMSA 2061 professional development programs learn to use the tools, research, and experiences of education reform to enable all students to achieve the learning expressed in state and national standards. Activities described in this report fall into two categories, Introductory Workshops and long-term programs with districts. IMSA 2061 Introductory Workshops help educators become aware of how to apply Project 2061 publications …

Voice, Identity, And Knowledge: Teaching And Learning In An Urban Classroom, Colleen M. Reardon
Voice, Identity, And Knowledge: Teaching And Learning In An Urban Classroom, Colleen M. Reardon
College of Education Theses and Dissertations
This study explored the dynamics that impact opportunity for students to share knowledge, and express beliefs, values, and opinions in the context of an eighth grade classroom. A multi-methods approach was used to examine factors that contributed to the enhancement or diminishment of possibilities for student voice. The role of the teacher's voice in this dynamic became an unexpectedly powerful factor in opportunities for students to share their knowledge and ideas. Findings suggested that the ways in which students were encouraged or discouraged from participating impacted their learning and identities. The intricate and fundamental ways in which voice was tied …

In-Betweenness: Religion And Conflicting Visions Of Literacy, Loukia K. Sarroub
In-Betweenness: Religion And Conflicting Visions Of Literacy, Loukia K. Sarroub
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
In this article, I examine the multiple uses of religious and secular text at school, home, and in the community. Specifically, I focus on how Yemeni American high school girls employ religious, Arabic, and secular texts as a means for negotiating home and school worlds. The frame of reference—in-betweenness—is a powerful heuristic with which the contextual uses of texts and language among the Yemeni American students can be delineated. In-betweenness signifies the immediate adaptation of one’s performance or identity to one’s textual, social, cultural, and physical surroundings. During 1997–1999, I conducted ethnographic fieldwork in the Yemeni and Arab community in …
It’S Time To Upgrade: Tests And Administration Procedures For The New Millennium, Michael Russell
It’S Time To Upgrade: Tests And Administration Procedures For The New Millennium, Michael Russell
Essays in Education
Increasing use of computers in schools has led to a mis-alignment between the way some students develop skill and knowledge and how they are tested. This paper reviews past research that demonstrates that paper-based tests that require students to produce written responses underestimate the achievement of students who are accustomed to writing on computer. The paper then explores how learning that occurs through other instructional uses of computers is not adequately captured by current testing practices. The paper argues that new approaches should be explored to better measure student learning.
Museum Educators' Workshop Study: Attracting And Retaining Teachers In Museum-Sponsored Professional Development Programs, Steven R. Rogg
Museum Educators' Workshop Study: Attracting And Retaining Teachers In Museum-Sponsored Professional Development Programs, Steven R. Rogg
Steven R Rogg
In preparation for the Museum Educator’s Workshop, the Planning Team saw that a necessary first step would be to honor the perspectives of Chicago Public School (CPS) teachers and principals. Changes in Illinois Teacher Recertification requirements, changes within the CPS itself, and nation-wide developments in the teaching profession suggested that a fresh look at Chicago’s professional development landscape would be necessary. Indeed, many relevant questions about the role(s) of museums in teacher professional development were raised during initial Planning Team discussions. Here are just a few examples: Which organizations are the foremost providers of professional development for CPS teachers and …

Gesamtkunstwerk: Architecture/Interior Architecture - Elemental Integration As A Pedagogical Foundation For Design Education, Rebecca O'Neal Dagg
Gesamtkunstwerk: Architecture/Interior Architecture - Elemental Integration As A Pedagogical Foundation For Design Education, Rebecca O'Neal Dagg
Proceedings of the 18th National Conference on the Beginning Design Student
The Architecture/ Interior Architecture [ARIA] duel degree program at Auburn University's School of Architecture is a unique design education model that offers a holistic approach to the relationship between interior and exterior space early in the design student's education. This program's mission at a fundamental pedagogical basis incorporates Architecture and Interior Architecture within Auburn's architecture curriculum model, allowing the development of the concept of "total design" into the design mentality of students. Gesamtkunstwerk, the German word most commonly interpreted in reference to Modem Architecture historical discourse to mean "total work of art:' offers inspiration to the ARIA program model via …
Educating Emerging Vision, Marcella Eaton, Karen Wilson Baptist
Educating Emerging Vision, Marcella Eaton, Karen Wilson Baptist
Proceedings of the 18th National Conference on the Beginning Design Student
Learning to see requires practice, risk-taking, and a deliberate awakening of conscious perception. Vision which can be interpreted as an integrated human capacity that emerges from the world of lived experience, is participatory and engaged rather than detached and observatory. Learning to look - vision- is deeply subjective, emerging from experience and critical consciousness. When vision becomes clear, students become aware of what was once hidden, lost, or invisible to them. Awakened vision requires a response. Educators must teach learners to balance their vision with action.channeling 'seeing' as a force against fear, and isolation, (that so often occurs in the …
Design As Language, Patrick Louis Carrico
Design As Language, Patrick Louis Carrico
Proceedings of the 18th National Conference on the Beginning Design Student
Good design has many faces; one is articulated well by the principals of Gestalt, while another is formed by tradition and style. When teaching design, it is important to delineate between the two. What makes the Mona Lisa universal and the cover of "Staying Alive" doomed is that the former uses good design grammar; and the latter uses an obsolete design dialect. Understanding their difference is integral in deciding the line between less expressive designs, like commercial design, and the design layer of a cathartic painting. Design is a language.

Multicultural Novels And Activities: An English And Language Arts Curriculum For Middle And High School Students In The Yakima Valley, Karen A. Jenner Gemeinhart
All Graduate Projects
Research in the area of education concludes that both white and underserved populations benefit from the use of multicultural education. The curriculum provided in this project is founded on the research findings of educational specialists who outline these benefits. The use of multicultural education as a way to connect students to the curriculum is crucial in providing all students with an equal opportunity to learn. The Yakima Valley in Washington State is home to a number of Hispanic and Native American students who reflect a lack of academic achievement on standardized tests that assess literacy. A Model Staff Development Program In Technology Skills For Selected Secondary Schools, Suzanne Keil
A Model Staff Development Program In Technology Skills For Selected Secondary Schools, Suzanne Keil
All Graduate Projects
The relationship between staff professional development in technology that enhanced staff efficiencies were studied. A model staff development program in technology has been developed to make connections between teacher's readiness and their mastery of technology skills. Research has been obtained that indicated a direct correction between teachers' readiness in technology and their implementation of technology into the classroom. Secondary teachers must be taught using inservices, practice skills and given opportunities to share their experiences with colleagues. Administrators must take leadership in developing and supporting a quality technology training program that recognizes the staffs' individualized needs.
