Feminist-Infused Participatory Action Research To Promote Female Students’ Self- Efficacy In Mathematics, Nicole Hreno Jul 2019

Feminist-Infused Participatory Action Research To Promote Female Students’ Self- Efficacy In Mathematics, Nicole Hreno

Theses and Dissertations

Prompted by the manifestations of decreased levels of mathematical self-efficacy among the female students in my district, the purpose of this study was to investigate the source of self-efficacy development that was most influential among our female students and engage in praxis to combat these gender inequities. Grounded in critical feminist theory, I engaged six teacher-researchers in participatory action research through qualitative methodologies. Using questionnaires to examine the worldviews of our female students, the emergent study was guided by these voices which were previously silenced. The interventions employed were a direct result of the females’ expressed mathematical experiences, leading us …

Modelos Pedagógicos Y Metodológicos Para Los Estudios De Género En Clases De Pregrado, María Claudia André

Faculty Publications

Causal-Comparative Study Of Reading Self-Efficacy Of Senior High School Students Based On English Course Placement, Carrie Marie Deel Jun 2019

Causal-Comparative Study Of Reading Self-Efficacy Of Senior High School Students Based On English Course Placement, Carrie Marie Deel

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

In addition to requisite knowledge and skills in the area of reading, self-efficacy is imperative for students’ success in academic tasks. While a considerable amount of research has been conducted on self-efficacy, there is a dearth of research with high school students’ reading self-efficacy. Moreover, there is virtually no research investigating the potential differences in reading self-efficacy for students enrolled in different kinds of senior English courses. This non-experimental quantitative causal-comparative study sought to examine whether there was a difference between the reading self-efficacy for male and female students enrolled in general education English classes and students enrolled in dual …

A Causal-Comparative Analysis Of Mathematics Self-Efficacy Based On Gender And Math Acceleration, Jacqueline Renee Probst Apr 2019

A Causal-Comparative Analysis Of Mathematics Self-Efficacy Based On Gender And Math Acceleration, Jacqueline Renee Probst

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This study tested the theories of self-efficacy and cognitive-stage that compare gender and degree of mathematics acceleration to mathematics self-efficacy for math students. The participants for this study were 158 Algebra 2 and Precalculus students enrolled at three different private, metropolitan, secondary schools in the same northwestern state during the 2018-2019 school year. A causal-comparative group comparison design was utilized to determine mathematics self-efficacy differences among math students in relation to gender and degree of mathematics acceleration. Student mathematics self-efficacy scores from the Mathematics Self-Efficacy Scale (MSES) were analyzed using a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) to compare means and …

Hegemonic Masculinities And Children’S Picture Books, Nathan N. Taylor Apr 2019

Hegemonic Masculinities And Children’S Picture Books, Nathan N. Taylor

Journal of Research Initiatives

This study focused on the role of hegemonic masculinities in children’s picture books. Chiefly, marginalized and subordinated masculinities are highlighted to investigate their relationships with dominant and complicit masculinities. This was done under a feminist reading of patriarchy and the connection between patriarchy and masculinities. Utilizing a critical discourse analysis framework, the author problematizes the personal transformation of the protagonists in three children’s picture books. The personal transformation attends to the masculine subject on an individual level, but fails to address how hegemonic masculinities and patriarchy operate at a discursive and corporeal level. Suggestions are made from the findings on …

Understanding The Relationship Between Gender And Self-Efficacy In Northeast Texas Public Schools, Abbie Strunc Ph.D., Kimberly Murray Ph.D. Feb 2019

Understanding The Relationship Between Gender And Self-Efficacy In Northeast Texas Public Schools, Abbie Strunc Ph.D., Kimberly Murray Ph.D.

Journal of Human Services: Training, Research, and Practice

Using a sample of 147 K-12 teachers in Northeast Texas, the authors examine the importance of gender for teachers, and if gender impacts his or her own feelings of self-efficacy, while controlling for demographic variables. Findings enhance scholars’ understanding of how men and women view themselves and their perceptions of their own self-efficacy in education. This research also merges the literature in education and sociology, providing an example of how interdisciplinary research can improve our understandings of social problems found within educational institutions.
