The Effectiveness Of Video Tape Monitoring Of Direct Instruction Procedures Across Teachers, John H. Cottrell
Masters Theses
A multiple baseline across subjects experimental design was used to evaluate the effects of monitoring subject performance and providing feedback regarding the implementation of Direct Instruction (DI) procedures from video taped recordings of the subject's presentations of the DI lessons upon the implementation of those DI procedures. The subjects were two junior high school special education teachers who teach reading using the SRA Corrective Reading; Decoding B program. The DI lessons were recorded on VHS video tape and observational data were recorded during baseline. During intervention, a monitor also provided feedback on the subjects performance using examples from the video …

Cognitive Levels Of Thinking For Religious Training Materials And Infusion Across The Curriculum, Patrick Low
Masters Theses
The major accomplishment of this project was the creation of cognitive levels of questions spanning Bloom's (1964) taxonomy of learning, fostering religious training in nontraditional class settings at Kalamazoo Christian High School, Kalamazoo, Michigan. Classes involved were business mathematics, health, and physical education.
Descriptors, i.e., key terms, were developed from teachers' goals and objectives. Descriptors were then checked in a concordance to help develop Scripture reference for question development. Weekly or biweekly, participating teachers and the curriculum committee were supplied draft sections of the project; they gave feedback relative to usefulness and acceptability.
The results have been termed "very useful" …

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education
The study is an inquiry into the influence of expressive writing practice on the transactional writing abilities of selected fourth grade students. It is based on the ideas of James Britton, an English theoretician concerned with writing. The study was formulated to investigate how the process of writing occurs. Writing research is at an early stage, and this study will expand the knowledge of the field.
The study consisted of a treatment group receiving intensive practice with expressive writing over the course of one semester while the control group did not. A posttest was administered which involved the students having …
Managing Instructional Information: A Decision Support System To Aid In Textbook Selection, Fred B. Wheeler Jr.
Managing Instructional Information: A Decision Support System To Aid In Textbook Selection, Fred B. Wheeler Jr.
Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the feasibility of developing a decision support system--a set of computerized information management tools to collect, store, analyze, and report information--to aid in the selection of classroom textbooks. The study was designed to assess the economic, technical, and operational feasibility using a management information systems model. A textbook selection decision was regarded as a combination of both operational control and managerial control decision types, semi-structured in nature, requiring a wide range of data having specific information characteristics.
Working in a rural North Carolina school system, three administrators, twelve special education teachers and …

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The State of Utah's Department of Education has developed an objective/outcome based education model, K-12 grade levels, based upon effective teaching research. The model components are 1) a core curriculum consisting of the basic elements essential for every student's educational program; 2) curriculum instruction based upon the mastery of educational outcomes at an appropriate level in accuracy and fluency, with a variety of options for learning; and 3) management systems which eliminate redundancy in the educational process. Two technological systems which have been piloted with some implementation through collaborations are the MID--Project developed at Utah State University and the CORVUS--Project …

Issues Regarding The Establishment Of Criteria For The Analysis And Selection Of Science Textbooks., Ron Good, James Shymansky
Educator Preparation & Leadership Faculty Works
The first part of this paper discusses the nature and use of high-inference and low-inference criteria for the evaluation of science textbooks. The second part discusses a project entitled Criteria for the Analysis and Selection of Science Textbooks (CASST). Included are results of a state survey which show that very little emphasis is given to problem-solving in the forms used by textbook adoption committees, that few states use science textbook appraisal forms that are specifically designed for grade level groupings, and that science process skills are not often given much prominence in textbook evaluation forms. Based on these and other …

The Effects Of Genre And Tone On Undergraduate Students Preferred Patterns Of Response To 2 Short-Stories And 2 Poems, Jane Ann Zaharias
Educational Studies, Research, and Technology Department Faculty Publications
To assess the effects of textual variation on students' preferred patterns of literary response, 166 college undergraduates were asked to read two poems and two short stories. They then completed a modified version of the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement's Response Preference Measure for each literary work. Data from the response preference inventories were analyzed by means of a two-factor repeated-measurement MANOVA, with genre and tone as the within-subjects variables. Significant main effects were obtained for both genre and tone. The genre x tone interaction was, however, not significant. As a follow-up, a series of 2 x …

The Integration Of Constructive Visualization, Self-Talk, And Relaxation In The Acquisition Of Social Skills, Karen Sue Campbell
All Graduate Projects
The need for teaching social skills, imagery, relaxation, and self-talk was studied and confirmed. Review and use of many of these curriculums revealed overlap among some curriculums, but none fully integrated skills from each of the diverse approaches to teaching social competence. The purpose of this project was to integrate a select body of information addressing social skills, self-talk, relaxation, and imagery into a developmental curriculum for use with children and adolescents.

Ninth Grade Remedial Writing Project, Kurt Dean Clemmens
All Graduate Projects
The specific challenge I face in my ninth grade remedial English class is that of developing each student's skill in writing. This should be simple enough, but there is a diversity of obstacles that interferes with acceptable development.
Linear Measurement: A Prevocational Skills Curriculum Based On The Brigance Inventory Of Essential Skills, Linda Jane Kittle
Linear Measurement: A Prevocational Skills Curriculum Based On The Brigance Inventory Of Essential Skills, Linda Jane Kittle
All Graduate Projects
Student progress toward an educational goal can be enhanced by the use of a curriculum containing both assessment and instruction. This project is such a curriculum based on the linear measurement items of the Brigance Inventory of Essential Skills. The careful sequencing and prevocational nature of this curriculum, along with its record-keeping forms, make it especially useful for special education. It is also available as a data disk for use with Apple microcomputers.
