Computers And Their Suitability For Second And Foreign Language Error Correction, Kerwin A. Livingstone
Kerwin A. Livingstone
This article is an attempt to ascertain the suitability of computers for second and foreign language (SL/FL) error correction, especially those made by SL/FL learners. For this purpose, the handling of such errors proposed in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) literature will be examined. Subsequently the technologies capable of evaluating student output and identifying and correcting Non-Native Speaker (NNS) errors will be examined. Though it will be made quite clear that the computer cannot substitute a human being in total language processing, some strengths of artificial intelligence in partial language processing will be pointed out and their suitability for L2 error …

The GVSU University Libraries has responded in the last five years to internal and external emphases on assessing student learning outcomes and our contributions to student learning. We’ve conducted a higher-level information literacy assessment, and have made a priority of developing information literacy tools for use by classroom faculty. We have twice administered SAILS, the "Standardized Assessment of Information Literacy Skills," to provide us with a broad benchmark measure of student IL skills against a cohort of our institutional peers. We discovered that large scale efforts such as SAILS can be at odds with our approach to IL, proving to …

Thinking Like Thinkers: Is The Art And Discipline Of An "Attitude Of Suspended Conclusion" Lost On Lawyers?, Donald J. Kochan
Donald J. Kochan
In his 1910 book, How We Think, John Dewey proclaimed that “the most important factor in the training of good mental habits consists in acquainting the attitude of suspended conclusion. . .” This Article explores that insight and describes its meaning and significance in the enterprise of thinking generally and its importance in law school education specifically. It posits that the law would be best served if lawyers think like thinkers and adopt an attitude of suspended conclusion in their problem solving affairs. Only when conclusion is suspended is there space for the exploration of the subject at hand. The …

Electronic Negotiation: A Teaching Tool For Encouraging Student Self-Reflection, Brooks C. Holtom, Amy Kenworthy-U'Ren
Amy L. Kenworthy
As the amount of negotiation taking place electronically increases, the responsibility of negotiation instructors to prepare students to successfully operate in electronic environments grows. We believe that skills related to electronic negotiation — like many other negotiation skills — are best taught by providing students opportunities to gain firsthand experience followed by self-reflection. For the past five years, we have used an electronic negotiation exercise to allow students to personally experience the complexities associated with negotiations completed exclusively over the Internet. Further, with the use of e-mail and instant messaging, a powerful record emerges: a complete transcript of the negotiation encounter. …

In response to growing concerns among faculty regarding the lack of attention to the bilingual student population in our pre-service teacher education program, the authors engaged in a shared self-study of the process of revising and implementing a secondary English methods course with explicit attention to the special needs of bilingual/bicultural learners. The paper describes how the second author, an English educator, with support from the first author, a mentor/colleague in bilingual education, identified and negotiated tensions and dilemmas that arose in a process of curricular transformation toward culturally and linguistically responsive teacher education practice. The study highlights several points …

Media Supported Problem-Based Learning And Role-Play In Clinical Nurse Education, Leeann Whitehair, Meg O'Reilly
Media Supported Problem-Based Learning And Role-Play In Clinical Nurse Education, Leeann Whitehair, Meg O'Reilly
Dr Meg O'Reilly
The introduction of a problem-based learning role-play into an undergraduate nursing degree has motivated and inspired students to take an active approach to learning. Practising the role of a registered nurse and working in a simulated patient environment were seen as valid preparation for future practice. Collaborating with peers and tutors provided students with confidence to solve authentic patient problems and motivated them to accept responsibility for preparation and active participation during lab sessions. Inclusion of digital recordings of expert demonstrations of clinical skills significantly enhanced students’ skills development. Students’ future colleagues working in health care, noted their preparedness, high …
Combining Forces: The Joint Defense Agreement In Civil Litigation, Stephen Messer
Combining Forces: The Joint Defense Agreement In Civil Litigation, Stephen Messer
Stephen Messer
From day one of law school aspiring lawyers are taught that information shared in confidence between a lawyer and his client is confidential. Although all lawyers are well aware of this, surprisingly few know that conversations with a client and someone else's lawyer can also be privileged. This is what happens when a joint defense agreement is created; Joint defense agreements extend the attorney client privilege throughout the entire defense camp in cases where multiple defendants and their counsel have common interests in the litigation. This often overlooked, yet highly effective legal strategy may serve as a valuable tool for …

Concern over the academic talent development of Division I student–athletes has led to increased research to explain variations in their academic performance. Although a substantial amount of attention has been given to the relationship between student–athletes and their levels of academic success, there remain critical theoretical and analytical gaps. The purpose of this article is to develop a conceptual model to understand and explain the cumulative processes and characteristics—as a whole and in stages—that influence academic success for Division I student–athletes. Research on student–athletes and academic success is reviewed and synthesized to provide a rationale for the basic elements of …
