Parfois Le Hasard Fait Bien Les Choses: The Biography Of Justus Rosenberg, Vikramaditya H. Joshi

Senior Projects Spring 2018

Senior Project submitted to The Division of Languages and Literature of Bard College.

As the authorized biographer of Professor Justus Rosenberg, who, as a young man, functioned as a courier in Varian Fry’s Emergency Rescue Committee, and thus facilitated the escape of émigrés from Vichy France, I experiment in this project with a form of storytelling that juxtaposes his classroom dialogues about twentieth century novels with my account of his experiences as a guerrilla fighter during the French Resistance.

By analyzing archival material, interviewing Professor Rosenberg and retracing his journey across Europe during World War Two, while simultaneously learning French …

The Quality Of Mercy, Kerry Mcnamara Jan 2018

The Quality Of Mercy, Kerry Mcnamara

English Theses & Dissertations

The Quality of Mercy is a hybrid of memoir and reportage, the story of a daughter’s love and her father’s journey through his vocation to the Catholic Church, his entry in the priesthood and his years of missionary work. Not many people discover in their teenage years that their father had been a celibate Catholic priest. Not many have the opportunity to trace their father’s story through diaries, interviews, and recollections. The Quality of Mercy is both a window into the world and a mirror into the soul, a daughter’s attempt to tell her father’s unique tale.

Five pieces follow the course of the Duckworths, who witnessed the growth of industrialism, the toils of migration, the extension of the B&O railroad, and the eruption of the American Civil War. The lives described in this thesis are the patriarchs of the Duckworth family, beginning with Henry Duckworth migrating to West …

Helen, Alfreda, Babci: A Woman's Struggle For Her Own Destiny, Christopher Kotson Apr 2006

Helen, Alfreda, Babci: A Woman's Struggle For Her Own Destiny, Christopher Kotson

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

Ralph Waldo Emerson, in his essay Self-Reliance, defined complacency as the ultimate satisfaction of the self despite everything. It is to “rise above time’s rule” and “shun the battles of fate.” It is these battles of fate in the course of time’s rule that essentially predetermine how individuals work out their destinies by limiting or overriding human will. In following Emerson’s philosophy, I believe that we possess innate qualities that give us the potential to overcome such destiny. One can become a stone in the middle of a river, impervious to its flow. My grandmother, Alfreda, had brief tastes of …

Eldorado: The Poes In Norfolk, Myreen Moore Nicholson Jan 1996

Eldorado: The Poes In Norfolk, Myreen Moore Nicholson

Institute for the Humanities Theses

Edgar Allan Poe is one of the best known Americans in the world, as a great poet, literary critic and essayist, and innovator of the analytic detective story. Yet he basically remains his own best mystery. Major cities have monuments to him. This creative work's object is to show that Norfolk, Virginia, was central in his life and art. In fact, the theatre company with which his actress mother, Eliza Arnold Poe (and her friends, the Sullys), was longest affiliated, was headquartered there. Edgar's sister Rosalie was born in a house on Brewer Street. Times and the circumstances of Poe …

Life And Personality Of Robert Frost, Una Mae Atkinson Jan 1970

Life And Personality Of Robert Frost, Una Mae Atkinson

Honors Theses

The most important American poet since Walt Whitman is the New Englander, Robert Frost. People who have never thought of reading poetry take to Frost. His words are simple words; the images are simple, most often country, things. The music of his poetry is the sound of everyday talk, and the ideas, on the surface, anyway, are plain and straight. Subjects of Frost's poetry are such things as nature, love and friendship, self-trust, fear, and courage.

Thus, Robert Frost occupies a unique position in modern poetry. Unlike most contemporary poets, he has managed to win a wide popular audience while …

Kentucky Autobiography And Kentucky Culture., William F. Keirce Aug 1948

Kentucky Autobiography And Kentucky Culture., William F. Keirce

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to trace the historical development of autobiographical writing in Kentucky; to analyze the literary and philosophical characteristics of these works and, by this means, to divide these writings into several categories; and, finally, to reveal by an interpretation of these autobiographies, certain cultural aspects of Kentucky life and society. As thus stated, the intentions of this study are several; but, actually, all these aims are inseparably related part. of a single general problem which is to investigate Kentucky autobiographical writing as a whole in order to better understand the individual works in that literature.

Sara Teasdale: Her Life And Work, Virginia Mcknight Jun 1937

Sara Teasdale: Her Life And Work, Virginia Mcknight

English Language and Literature ETDs

This study of Sara Teasdale was made not only in an attempt to learn more about her as a woman and as a poet but try to relate the two, to explain why she wrote the type of poetry which she did, why some of her poems express such a joyous love of life and others such as disillusionment. The latter expression is more understandable when the facts of her life are known. The studies of her imagery and stanzaic forms aid in forming an opinion of her ability as a poet and also tend to characterize her as a …
