Tin Can Tourist, Scott Hightower
Tin Can Tourist, Scott Hightower
Poetry
A world of history is a world of destinations and possibilities. In Tin Can Tourist Scott Hightower draws from a legacy larger than the limits of personal history, body, and brand. From the harsh Protestant landscape of his native central Texas to the pageantry of the historical architecture of St. Maria in Trastevere, Rome, he persues the limit of the poet. Where exactly does one begin and the world start? Hightower reflects a world containing AIDS and cancer, Caravaggio and van der Werff. Nature, interpersonal relationships, and the culture of the world—from simple to extraordinary—are all fair game. His partaking, …
Linda Grace Hoyer Updike: Woman, Author, And Mother, Leslie Hoffman
Linda Grace Hoyer Updike: Woman, Author, And Mother, Leslie Hoffman
Library Summer Fellows
Linda Grace Hoyer was a brilliant individual. She graduated from Ursinus College at the age of nineteen, received a master's from Cornell University, and after many years of diligent work, published two novels and a myriad of short stories. She lived an unusual life: reflective, feminine in her thought processes, but nevertheless somewhat stubborn in a time when women were meant to fill a subordinate role. I have found through my research that Hoyer's brilliance did not lie in her intellect and writing alone. In fact, as demonstrated by her literature's autobiographical nature, her brilliance as a writer seemed to …
Two Necessities Of Poetry: Plenitude And Exuberance, Marianne Rogoff
Two Necessities Of Poetry: Plenitude And Exuberance, Marianne Rogoff
Collected Faculty and Staff Scholarship
"Alicia Ostriker advocates a 'poetics of ardor,' one which is not detached, objective, or merely intellectual, instead a poetry that embraces a big-hearted and practical definition of what erotic means. Dancing at the Devil’s Party is mostly about women’s poetry but Ostriker also reminds us of the wide-reaching sensuality of Whitman, Hopkins, Keats, and other sexy male forebears who permitted love to appear in their work."

Itch, Thomas Demarchi
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
ITCH is a collection of short fiction that explores the ways people give and receive love. The love explored is not limited merely to romance; the deep bond of friendship, the strained relationships between family members, and the quest for mending broken connections are also explored. The stories' protagonists are male, range in age from seven to mid-forties, and hail from different backgrounds: there is a fireman, a biologist/medical student, an adjunct English professor, a computer programmer, a drug addict, an attorney, a prepubescent thief.
Simple and straightforward, the plots predominantly linear, these stories present situations where ordinary people attempt …

Neat definitions of biographical and autobiographical writing have been challenged in the twentieth century. This essay offers a comparative study of two texts which may be classified as autobiography or biography or both, and which, because of their blurred generic boundaries, bring to light several theoretical questions about life writing.

There is something about the way the phone rings that lets you know it's Them - a kind of glitter in the chime, a certain je ne sais quoi to the cadence, which seems to skip a beat as if it can't believe that They are calling. You pick up, heart throbbing, getting ready to move your mouth, a sly frisson of sweat striking your palms.
"They asked me to call," Their assistant says. "They want you at the house next Thursday. And then you'll all go somewhere. A plane will be involved. You'll want to bring a passport. Until …

Moons In Our Bellies: A Collection Of Earth Poetry, Alyssa Von Lehman
WWU Honors College Senior Projects
Women writers from Sylvia Plath to Terry Tempest Williams to Tori Amos have described the poetry and stories they create as their children. Creating poetry is an organic, natural process and the result, the living fruit of our labors, is always intimately connected to its creator. If it fails, stops short of fulfilling its purpose, we are disappointed, our pride bruised, our abilities as mothers questioned. We did not nurture this one enough and its heart stopped before it ever opened its eyes; a stillborn, as Plath says. Or we may say that this one somehow has that intangible breath …

In chapter 1, “Before,” of the book Between Gay and Straight: Understanding Friendship Across Sexual Orientation (AltaMira Press, 2001), I story the absences, silences, and stereotypes surrounding same-sex orientation when I came of age in the 1980s and early 90s.

“Contact” is chapter 2 of the book Between Gay and Straight: Understanding Friendship Across Sexual Orientation (AltaMira Press, 2001). The timeframe portrayed extends from June 1994 to September 1995. It opens with my boyfriend Doug meeting David Holland, who would become our first gay male friend. David and his partner Chris introduce us to gay spaces around Tampa. Also in this chapter, Doug begins his four-year tenure with The Cove, a team in the predominantly gay Suncoast Softball league.

Negotiating Academic And Personal Selves (Chapter 4 Of The Book Between Gay And Straight: Understanding Friendship Across Sexual Orientation), Lisa M. Tillmann Ph.D.
Faculty Publications
“Negotiating Academic and Personal Selves” is Chapter 4 of the book Between Gay and Straight: Understanding Friendship Across Sexual Orientation (AltaMira Press, 2001). Here I show how my relationships with the gay men of my research community alter how I position myself in graduate courses, how I practice research, how I write, and how I teach my classes. As a student, I delve into new projects on sexual orientation and identity; as an instructor, I alter course reading lists, assignments, and activities. This chapter also moves through my increasingly problematic encounters with associates who identify as heterosexual. My new consciousness …

Life Projects (Chapter 5 Of The Book Between Gay And Straight: Understanding Friendship Across Sexual Orientation), Lisa M. Tillmann Ph.D.
Faculty Publications
“Life Projects” is Chapter 5 of the book Between Gay and Straight: Understanding Friendship Across Sexual Orientation (AltaMira Press, 2001). The timeframe spans from the fall of 1996 to January 1997. I’m taking a course on life history, and I ask a member of my research community, Gordon Bernstein, to participate in my project. During our interviews, Gordon teaches me about the ongoing process of coming out—to oneself, to other gay men, and to coworkers, friends, and family. Later, I grapple with elements of this network of gay male friends that can be unsettling, especially for women. I bemoan its …

Defending Life: Epilogue To Between Gay And Straight: Understanding Friendship Across Sexual Orientation [Book], Lisa M. Tillmann Ph.D.
Faculty Publications
In the epilogue, “Defending Life,” the project comes full circle. The setting is the oral defense of my PhD dissertation. About a dozen of the men I befriended and wrote about—most of whom have read the document—are in attendance. My academic and research communities offer personal and scholarly responses to my work. We talk through the disbelief and pain surrounding Matthew Shepard’s death just four days before, and we try to direct ourselves toward a future of greater harmony and justice.

Tales From The (Softball) Field (Chapter 3 Of The Book Between Gay And Straight: Understanding Friendship Across Sexual Orientation), Lisa M. Tillmann Ph.D.
Faculty Publications
“Tales from the (Softball) Field” is chapter 3 of the book Between Gay and Straight: Understanding Friendship Across Sexual Orientation (AltaMira Press, 2001). “Tales” marks the beginning of my academic journey into this community. It’s the fall of 1995, and I’m taking a graduate class on qualitative methods. Unexpectedly, the softball field emerges as a fieldwork site. As I become immersed in team members’ lives and stories, I begin exploring how to “work the hyphen” (Fine, 1994) between gay and straight, to practice research (and friendship) with and for my friends/participants.

"Ich Suche Ein Unschuldiges Land," Reading History In The Poetry Of Ingeborg Bachmann, Kathrin M. Bower
Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications
In this brief monograph based on her dissertation, Leslie Morris sets out to achieve a series of aims: to contest the alleged divide between Bachmann's poetry and prose, to counter "the myth of her apolitical poetic voice" (10), to address the presence and absence of history in her poetry, and, finally, to consider how to read Bachmann's poetic ceuvre in light of historical developments in Germany and Austria in the 1980s and 1990s. In a sense, Morris is also trying to rehabilitate post-war aesthetic modemism from a reductive, binary mode of criticism that separates aesthetics and politics. Following in the …
