Range estimation algorithms have been applied to Laser Detection and Ranging (LADAR) data to test for accuracy and precision. Data was acquired from Matlab® simulations and an experiment using the Advanced Scientific Concepts 3-D flash LADAR camera. Simulated LADAR data was based on a Gaussian pulse shape model with Poisson noise added. Simulations were performed to test range estimation algorithm performance with respect to waveform position within the range gate. The purpose of the algorithm developed in this thesis was to create a post processing method that could resolve objects at low signal levels using polarization diversity and no knowledge of the atmospheric seeing conditions. The process uses a two-channel system, one unpolarized image and one linearly polarized image, in a GEM algorithm to reconstruct the object. Previous work done by Strong showed that a two-channel system using polarization diversity on short exposure imagery could produce images up to twice the diffraction limit. Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates has emphasized a need for a greater number of intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) assets to support combatant commanders and military operations globally. Unmanned systems, especially MAVs, used as ISR platforms provide the ability to maintain covertness during missions and help reduce the risk to human life. This research develops waypoint generation algorithms required to keep a point of interest (POI) in the field of view (FOV) of a fixed sensor on a micro air vehicle (MAV) in the presence of a constant wind.

Verification Of A Decision Level Fusion Algorithm Using A Proven Atr System And Measured Sar Data, James Douglas Thompson

Decision level fusion (DLF) algorithms combine outputs of multiple single sensors to make one confident declaration of a target. This research compares performance results of a DLF algorithm using measured data and a proven ATR system with results from simulated data and a modeled ATR system. This comparison indicates that DLF offers significant performance improvements over single sensor looks. However, results based on simulated data and a modeled ATR are slightly optimistic and overestimate results from measured data and a proven ATR system by nearly 10% over all targets tested.

Both secure and anti-jam resistant, the Link-16 is the primary communications channel used by the Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System (Joint STARS) for the exchange of real-time tactical data among various ground, air, and sea platforms of the United States of America and North Atlantic Treaty Organization forces. This research explored the effect of increasing network traffic for imagery transfer to the mean delay when operating under different network topologies. The foundation of automatic target recognition is based upon pattern recognition. In this work, we present new pattern recognition concepts specifically in the area of classification and propose new techniques that will allow one to determine when a classifier is being arrogant. Clearly arrogance in classification is an undesirable attribute. Various agencies throughout the Department of Defense possess intelligence imagery and electrooptical signature data required by researchers in the field of automatic target recognition (ATR). The Air Force Research Laboratory, Sensors Directorate, as been tasked with creating a virtual distributed laboratory (VDL) which will make this data available to ATR researchers via high speed networks such as the defense research and engineering network (DREN). Based on an autoregressive model, Complex Partial Correlation CPARCOR features are known to provide exceptional Position, Scale, and Rotation Invariant PSRI properties for planar 2-Dimensional 2-D object recognition. Although autogressive models have been successfully applied to numerous spatio-temporal recognition tasks, the effects of out-of-plane image rotations were never considered. This study investigates application of the CPAR-COR model to a five class problem of nonplanar 2-D views of 3-D objects. This study investigated methods of targets detection using Wide-Angle Synthetic Aperture Radar (WASAR). WASAR uses multiple aspect angle Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images of the same scene. The SAR images were generated using a pre-release software package from package from Loral Corporation. The software was able to generate 512 by 512 pixel SAR images that contained various vegetation return which for our purposes we classified as clutter. Within this clutter, targets (M35 trucks) could be placed at random location and orientations. The software also had the capability of generating fully- polarimetic WASAR images with multiple depression angles. This data was …
