Cho Yuen Lam Oct 2003

Cho Yuen Lam

Theses & Dissertations

Interpretation And Re-Creation : English Translations Of Poetry In The Sanguo Zhi Yanyi, Pui Shan Tai

Theses & Dissertations

This thesis is a textual and contextual study of English renditions of poetry in Luo Guanzhong’s Sanguo zhi yanyi, in terms of their artistic approach and their bearing on the artistic functions which poetry fulfills in the novel. There are several English renditions of the Sanguo zhi yanyi in full or in part, including two full translations by Charles H. Brewit-Taylor and Moss Roberts. While the two full translations form the focus of the study, Roberts’s abridged version is also included. Published fifteen years before the full rendition by the same translator, the abridged version serves every now and then …

Mingjian Zha Sep 2003

Mingjian Zha

Theses & Dissertations

The Castaway: A Comparative Study Of Alienation In Franz Kafka's "The Trial" And J.M. Coetzee's "Foe", Alia Mohamed Taher Ahmed Tawfik Abou Zeid Jun 2003

The Castaway: A Comparative Study Of Alienation In Franz Kafka's "The Trial" And J.M. Coetzee's "Foe", Alia Mohamed Taher Ahmed Tawfik Abou Zeid

Archived Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a comparative study of alienation. It provides an analysis of the different ways in which the Czech writer, Franz Kafka, and the South African writer, J.M. Coetzee delineate alienation in their works, The Trial and Foe. Three aspects of alienation are discussed: alienation from self, world and language. Hence, the thesis emphasizes that manâ s predicament of alienation, homelessness and exile stems from a failure to recognize a self to which he can relate, an inability to find a home in an alien universe and an incapacity to develop a constructive relationship with words and language. This …

Chasing Demons: Female Villains And Narrative Strategy In Victorian Sensation Fiction, Heather Sowards Jan 2003

Chasing Demons: Female Villains And Narrative Strategy In Victorian Sensation Fiction, Heather Sowards

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This thesis explores Victorian sensation fiction and key authors who rely on essentialism, employing the classifications of either angel or demon to their literary female figures. Using Nina Auerbach's theories on these above categorizations and Helene Cixous's linguistic binaries, I examine the ways in which the narrators of Mary Elizabeth Braddon's Lady Audley's Secret, Sheridan Le Fanu's Uncle Silas, and Wilkie Collins's Heart and Science force this taxonomy onto the female villains who dominate the novels' themes. By looking closely at the narrative strategies, I conclude that these female characters themselves are proposing a very different sense of self or …

An Africanist-Orientalist Discourse: The Other In Shakespeare And Hellenistic Tragedy, Haegap Jeoung Jan 2003

An Africanist-Orientalist Discourse: The Other In Shakespeare And Hellenistic Tragedy, Haegap Jeoung

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The main aim of this dissertation is to show how the discourse of the psychoanalytical other--femininity, death, madness, disorder, and impiety--overlaps with colonial discourse in some plays from Shakespearean and Greek-Roman tragedy, and what difference or similarity there is between the two ages. The hypothesis is that foreigners are allegories of the psychoanalytical other. For this purpose, the research tries to grasp the concept of the other, from the viewpoint of psychoanalysis, and to analyze the core of colonial discourse on the basis of the concept of the psychoanalytical other. The starting point of the dissertation is that the other …

Translating "Hebrew" Into "Greek": The Discursive Hermeneutics Of Emmanuel Levinas's Talmudic Readings, Matthew Wayne Guy Jan 2003

Translating "Hebrew" Into "Greek": The Discursive Hermeneutics Of Emmanuel Levinas's Talmudic Readings, Matthew Wayne Guy

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines Emmanuel Levinas’s Talmudic readings and the hermeneutics employed to translate the Talmud into modern language. Levinas claims to be translating “Hebrew” into “Greek” by rendering into a universal, philosophical language (“Greek”) the ethical structure of subjectivity (“Hebrew”) within the Talmud. Since they investigate the structure of subjectivity, extensive use of his philosophical works and the influential works of others are used to analyze his Talmudic readings. Chapter One places Levinas’s project against the background of the Talmud, Judaic tradition, and projects like Rudolf Bultmann’s New Testament readings and Thorleif Boman’s comparative study of Greek and Hebrew. A …

Perspectives On Comparative Literature, Alexandru Boldor Jan 2003

Perspectives On Comparative Literature, Alexandru Boldor

LSU Master's Theses

The main objective of this dissertation was to provide researchers interested in the history and evolution of "comparative literature" with a collection of references delineating the evolution of the concept and the development of academic departments dedicated to its study. The paper includes a first section describing the main issues contributing to the "identity crisis" with which studies and departments defining themselves as "comparative" were consistently confronted ever since the term was coined. The "preliminary concepts" section offers an overview of the elements that usually confer a "comparative" quality to a literary study, such as interdisciplinarity and multiculturalism, together with …

Politicizing The Reader In The American Lyric-Epic: Walt Whitman's Leaves Of Grass And Pablo Neruda's Canto General, William Allegrezza Jan 2003

Politicizing The Reader In The American Lyric-Epic: Walt Whitman's Leaves Of Grass And Pablo Neruda's Canto General, William Allegrezza

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Both Walt Whitman and Pablo Neruda wanted to create epic works that would distinguish American literature from the literary traditions of Europe, works that would grow organically from the native landscapes and peoples of the Americas. Part of their projects included creating works that would act as political sourcebooks for their cultures. Whitman wanted to foster a democratic culture in the United States through writing a grand poetic work, while Neruda wanted to create a communist culture in Latin America through an epic work. Soon into the project Whitman realized that the traditional epic was not a suitable form for …

Renaissance And Reformation: From Private Morals To Public Policy In Alonso De Ercilla’S "La Araucana" And Edmund Spenser’S "The Faerie Oueene", Cyrus Moore Jan 2003

Renaissance And Reformation: From Private Morals To Public Policy In Alonso De Ercilla’S "La Araucana" And Edmund Spenser’S "The Faerie Oueene", Cyrus Moore

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The present study examines the significance for Ercilla and Spenser of humanism, Neoplatonism, Petrarchism, and cortegiania, competing discourses with distinct identities within the competing ideologies of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation. Both authors draw on a shared heritage of the translatio studii and, in particular, on imagery arising from epic poetry's underlying tension between epos and eros. Ercilla's use of this material fuels a renovatio of classical epic based on the poet's participation in the events he describes. Spenser's utilization of these motifs constitutes a transformatio impelled by reformed religion, which raises the stakes from the potential for shame or …
