The professional literature in the field of speech pathology contains a great many references to stuttering. A large part of this literature on stuttering has dealt with the problem of severity. The importance of the concept severity of stuttering can be viewed in its relation to the broad theoretical constructs in the field of stuttering. Severity is a way of quantifying the extent of abnormality or degree of interference with the normal speech process.
