Promise That You Will Sing About Me: Kendrick Lamar In Posterity, Brandon Apol

Music and Worship Student Presentations

Sometimes it would seem that the quietest moments turn out to have the loudest repercussions. This would seem to be a consistent case for twenty eight-year old Kendrick Lamar, whose career has been defined by surprise and unannounced publications of music that shortly afterward are spun into respected works of art. With an album that no one anticipated going to the 2013 Grammy awards, another album that leaked a week ahead of schedule (and brought Kendrick 5 Grammys), and an album that was released with almost no warning whatsoever, Kendrick Lamar Duckworth makes headlines with his art; of this there …

Intuition And Rationality In Olivier Messiaen's La Nativité Du Seigneur, Mark Konewko Jan 2017

Intuition And Rationality In Olivier Messiaen's La Nativité Du Seigneur, Mark Konewko

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

The purpose of this work is to demonstrate the blend of the intuitive and rational compositional methods used by Olivier Messiaen. The organ works of Messiaen transcend both the rational and intuitive thought and experience process. He practices a highly developed cogent design of harmonies, melodies and rhythmic structures in his music. Using original modes of limited transposition that dictate harmonies, birdsong as a model for melody and Hindu tâlas rhythmic structures to emulate the rhythmic flow in nature, Messiaen weaves an original fabric of music. In this investigation, the reconciliation of these two compositional techniques in Messiaen's La Nativité …

Embodied Composition: The Creation Of Enriched Interactional Experiences Through Music Composition, Aaron Bilney Geringer Jan 2017

Embodied Composition: The Creation Of Enriched Interactional Experiences Through Music Composition, Aaron Bilney Geringer

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Music is a form of embodied interaction through which people can synchronize their motor, sensory, and emotive systems. Anthropologists and developmental psychologists suggest that elements of music provide the groundwork for verbal interaction and interpersonal relationships (Aiello, 1996; Dissanayake, 2000; Mithen, 2006). When people interact with each other through music, the bases of community are formed. Phenomenological descriptions of individual’s experience of music and the role music plays in interpersonal interaction have been documented. However, there is little literature describing the embodied experiences of music composers as the architects of embodied interactions through music. Through this study, I address this …
