The Ouachita Baptist University Tigers rewrote OBU football history on Saturday with their 41-20 victory over rival Henderson State University. In addition to winning the 88th Battle of the Ravine, the Tigers finished the regular season with an undefeated, untied 10-0 record for the first time in program history.

Along with claiming the Great American Conference championship outright with the win, the Tigers finished the season with a No. 1 ranking in Super Region Three of the NCAA Division II Football Championship. Jaalen Watkins, a junior kinesiology major at Ouachita Baptist University, died from injuries sustained in a car accident on Thursday, July 3. He was a passenger in a car that was involved in a two-vehicle accident on I-630 in Little Rock, according to Arkansas State Police.

This study addresses the influence of a trigger event on mainstream news coverage of injuries in professional football. In 2002, four-time Super Bowl winner and NFL Hall of Famer Mike 'Iron Mike' Webster passed away due to what is known today as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), a condition that develops in the brain after multiple impacts. It has been confirmed that Webster sustained CTE from his 17-year NFL career, although medical evidence at the time of his death did not exist, and his passing was instead attributed to heart failure. The first men’s football World Cup in Africa, in 2010, provided an opportunity for development sportswriting. As mediator of sport for the people, mass media are well positioned to capitalize upon the development potential of football. This research analyzed development-related World Cup coverage to better understand African perceptions of identity and the role of African media in improving the quality of human life. Using a news database, this research compiled and analyzed stories published in Africa, outside South Africa, during the World Cup.
