Managerial Emotionality In Chinese Factories, Kathleen J. Krone, Ling Chen, Diane Kay Sloan, Llinda M. Gallant Aug 1997

Managerial Emotionality In Chinese Factories, Kathleen J. Krone, Ling Chen, Diane Kay Sloan, Llinda M. Gallant

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

Managerial emotion may be experienced and handled differently when reason and emotion are understood to be continuously (e.g., Eastern cultures) rather than dichotomously (e.g., Western cultures) related. Using a social constructionist perspective, this study investigated emotionality among directors from 48 different factories in the People’s Republic of China. Social, moral, and material/economic situations were identified as sources of pleasant and unpleasant managerial emotional experience. Thought-feeling continuities were identified in how the managers described their emotional experiences. Both pleasant and unpleasant emotions were experienced very intensely and were managed in ways that both conformed to and departed from cultural ideals. Managerial …

A Letter From The Executive Director, Jill Dolan Jul 1997

A Letter From The Executive Director, Jill Dolan

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)

Working with CLAGS this last year at our quarterly Board meetings, at our monthly committee meetings, and with the daily operations of our office, I'm continually impressed by the sophistication of our programs, the depth of our discussions, and the passion of our arguments about gay and lesbian and queer studies and its relationship to our diverse communities. After a productive year of four conferences and our monthly colloquia, amplified by co-sponsored events that sometimes didn't even make it onto our annual calendar, I'm proud of the richness of the work we've sponsored and presented.

Approaches To Managerial Influence In The People’S Republic Of China, Kathleen J. Krone, Ling Chen, Hongwei Xia Jul 1997

Approaches To Managerial Influence In The People’S Republic Of China, Kathleen J. Krone, Ling Chen, Hongwei Xia

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

This study identifies approaches to managerial influence in the People’s Republic of China and examines the reflection of cultural themes in these approaches. Forty-eight factory directors from state-owned enterprises completed a survey in which they reported what they would say to workers in obligatory and nonobligatory work situations. Descriptive coding was used to develop message category systems for each situation. A more interpretive form of analysis was used to identify how the cultural themes of values, political ideology, and changing managerial roles were reflected in the influence approaches reported. The interrelated cultural values of group-centeredness, hierarchy, and face concern were …

Women's Sports, Richard C. Crepeau Jun 1997

Women's Sports, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Twenty-five years ago Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 mandated that women not be discriminated against in any educational institution receiving federal funds. Although Title IX does not mention sport specifically it is clear that sport is one of those activities covered. When you see the hype being generated by the arrival of the WNBA, you might think that Title IX has been a major success. It has not.

Florida Sports, Richard C. Crepeau May 1997

Florida Sports, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

I am not sure if it's the travel I've been doing with its cumulative jet lag, some new peculiar alignment of the planets associated with the recent departure from San Diego, or just a simple coincidence, but this past couple of weeks in sports world has left my head spinning. Not surprising is the fact that many of these developments have come out of Florida, a state that seems to be rivaling California these days as the off-center of the universe. One theory has it that it's all related to Disney or the rockets fired from Cape Canaveral.

Title Ix, Richard C. Crepeau Apr 1997

Title Ix, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

How many more times will the courts need to rule before university athletic administrators and presidents finally understand that Title IX really does mean that men's and women's sport must be dealt with on an equal basis? This, in effect, is what has been said for the fifth time by the courts, when The Supreme Court this week refused to hear the appeal by Brown University of a lower court ruling of last November.

Scholarly But Relevant: A Comparison Of Topic Frequency Between Journalism Quarterly, Journal Of Broadcasting & Electronic Media And Rtnda Communicator, David Ozmun

Presentations and Lectures

This study compares the topics addressed in a professional trade publication, the RTNDA Communicator, with topics specifically addressing broadcast news in the scholarly journals Journalism Quarterly and Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media. The purpose of the research was to help ascertain whether television and radio news directors will find the research and issues of academic journal researchers useful and relevant to their journalism responsibilities.

The findings are based on a content analysis of the publications from 1992-1994, and are a partial replication of an earlier study that compared the content of Quill, Editor and Publisher and Columbia …
