EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

Telemedicine literally means medicine at a distance. It is both the delivery of healthcare and exchange of healthcare information over long distances, combining medical knowledge with communications and information technology. It includes both, the clinical (diagnosis, treatment and medical records) and academic medicine (research, education and training).

An estimated 100 million Americans suffer from chronic health conditions, including heart disease, lung disorders, and diabetes, and treatment for these conditions accounts for three-fourths of total U.S. health-care costs. A folksongs karaoke product has been created to increase usage of subtitled media to enhance literacy and technology use, particularly among girls in rural India. This entails generating and proliferating popular local folksongs with social and cultural themes of interest to girls, accompanied by the award-winning Same Language Subtitling (SLS) feature. In this paper, the prime goal is to discuss possible implications of this novel technology content on girls’ socialization, education, and activism. This Comment explores how television shows such as CSI and Law & Order have created heightened juror expectations in courtrooms across America. Surprise acquitals often have prosectors scratching their heads as jurors hold them to this new "Hollywood" standard. The Comment also analyzes the CSI phenomena by reflecting on past legal television shows that have influenced the public's perception of the legal profession and how the "CSI effect" has placed an even greater burden on parties to proffer some kind of forensic evidence at trial.

Broadband penetration and available speeds vary widely across OECD countries. Policymakers around the world, and especially in countries like the U.S. that lag in the rankings, are searching for policies to narrow those gaps. Relatively little empirical work tests possible reasons for these differences. In this paper I test the impacts of regulations and demographics on broadband development in a panel dataset across countries. The success of Ambient Intelligence (AmI) will depend on how secure it can be made, how privacy and other rights of individuals can be protected and how individuals can come to trust the intelligent world that surrounds them and through which they move. This contribution presents an analysis of ambient intelligence scenarios, particularly in regard to AmI's impacts on and implications for individual privacy. The analysis draws on our review of more than 70 AmI projects, principally in Europe. It notes the visions as well as the specifics of typical AmI scenarios. This essay explores how museums, public memory, and authenticity intersect to privilege an understanding of the past. Reflecting White control over the promotion of blues music, the curators at the Delta Blues Museum, located in Clarksdale, Mississippi, employ two rhetorical strategies to satisfy the expectations of (White) tourists who share culturally specific memories of the blues. First, the museum's rhetorical depiction of blues artists reflects White fascination with the mythic image of the primitive blues subject. This longitudinal qualitative research study examines how a group of parents and teachers sought to raise awareness in their community about harmful media effects. Initially condemning the influx of new digital media technologies such as violent video games, the group eventually shifted tactics in an effort to go beyond ‘preaching to the choir’ and bring other parents into the fold. Their experience suggests that we might reconsider media literacy as a form of social work.

Undergraduate students need effective academic advising to succeed in college (Pascarella & Terenzini, 1991; Mastrodicasa, 2001; Kramer, 2003). Advising within communication disciplines has received little research attention, and is not even mentioned in one key journal’s research agenda for the new millennium (Friedrich, 2002). This national survey of faculty, a starting point for further investigation, found faculty carry the major burden of advising, are seldom trained for it, and carry out a variety of time- consuming tasks beyond face-to-face student contact. Several areas of apparent deficiency were identified in regard to faculty preparation for, involvement in, and communication about advising.
